This Junkers Ju 88 A-1, Werk Nr. 088119, call sign U4+TK is currently undergoing a full restoration in Norway. The aircraft was salvaged from Jonsvatnet near Trondheim in 2003. It served with Kampfgeschwader 30 in the weeks after the German invasion of Norway in April 1940. When the restoration is finished, this Ju 88 will be one of three complete examples left in the world.
Music: Luftwaffe Strikes Again - Hearts of Iron IV original soundtrack.

These aircraft along with a number of other restored WW 2 aircraft are becoming just too valuable to risk returning them to flying status However if it could be used as a template to build a replica then that might be the way to go Replicate it

+Michael Naisbitt True, but if multiple examples exist then it is easier to put one in the air. One flying museum has a Ju-88 wreck so we can see what they do with it. It is difficult enough to put a single-engine German fighter in the air and it will be more expensive to restore any twin to flying status .
@hh1n
@hh1n 5 лет назад
If they have the means to restore it from an absolute decrepit wreck pulled from a lake bed to airworthy status then it would be a shame not to fly them every now and again. Surely if they could restore it from such a state they can accept the risk of normal wear and maintenance for the rare flight. An aircraft meant to fly, not to sit as a shell in a museum.
@michaelnaisbitt1639
@michaelnaisbitt1639 5 лет назад
Connor M I couldn’t agree more But if the aircraft is the last of its type as is this case with the Ar 234b and Do 335 and He 219. Then is it worth the risk. Taking into account the amount of new material that would have to made and used to get it airworthy. There is still the possibility of an accident I know there is a complete Ju 88 in a British museum but there are no plans to get it airworthy just because of logistics and it’s rarity. There are plans to make a replica Do 335 to flying condition why not this aircraft. All the best
@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 5 лет назад
@@michaelnaisbitt1639 We may see an He-111 and a Ju-88 in the next 15-20 years, but they are slow and expensive projects. An Arado 234? Unlikely unless it's a replica. Too bad the US Navy decided to dump their two examples into the water. A replica Do-335 would be cool, and there are handful of DB-603 engines around that are not being used. But there just isn't much leftovers around to support many German restorations to flying status unless somebody makes the components in a shop;

One Heinkel 111 was also salvaged. This was Werk Nr. 2320, call sign 6N+NH. I am not 100% sure, but I think this aircraft was sent to the German Museum of Technology in Berlin. The Heinkel was in a remarkable condition after being underwater for over 60 years. Markings and callsigns were clearly visible. Oberst Arthur von Casimir, the last pilot who flew this aircraft before it sank, was present when the aircraft was salvaged, he was then 96 years old. He died in 2005. Another land plane recovered in 1999 was the long extinct Fw 200 Condor, which crash into Trondheim's fjord in 1942 due to a technical fault. @FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 3 года назад
+Jan Doernte The Fw-190 and Me-262 were remade in very small numbers for the collector market, but these were special projects. There really isn't a sustainable supply of engines to keep new ones in the air. And even if many of the manufacturing challenges can be overcome, they are still not very affordable to insure, repair, and fuel to keep flying except for wealthy collectors and well-funded museums. Operating costs are in the thousands per hour.
@frankbutaric3565
@frankbutaric3565 3 года назад
@@FiveCentsPlease I don’t see engine availability as an issue since non original radial engines can be purchased. The real cost is the labor in building a limited production replica. How many can you sell and at what price to recoup the tooling costs alone?
@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 3 года назад
@@frankbutaric3565 The Shvetsov radials were manufactured into the 1970s I think, and probably the last big cubic inch radial manufactured in quantity. There is a stockpile of NOS parts to support WW2 radials but that is getting smaller, with some manufacturing of rings, barrels, bearings, etc. There isn't that much German stuff around, in spite of surprising number that are turning up to support various restorations. Manufacturing of major assemblies isn't happing right now, complicated because the license and patents for those the major engines are still owned. So long-term I see more aircraft parked on the ground or not flown much. Looking from the customer side of things and how many you can sell, today's owner is looking for authenticity and an investment. For example, the new-build Me-262s were limited to five specifically to guarantee to the buyers that those airframes would not lose value. Better 3D modeling is greatly reducing the costs for tooling and manufacturing airframes, but you still have a relatively small number of customers and museums buying vintage aircraft. It's about money and antiques are a less desirable equity investment for big portfolios.

July 15, 2020---When I keep seeing videos of aircraft/armor being discovered in lakes, rivers, etc., it makes me wonder what else is out there but hasn't been discovered yet. And what about the middle East with all its sand?

+Old, bald fat man Both the Middle East and the South Pacific are tricky politically, with unstable governments. Import/export paperwork can also be troublesome for warplanes still considered a "weapon of war" on paper. Both the Middle East and the South Pacific have also been scrapped out except for hard-to-reach areas or hidden relics. Forgotten scrap dumps have yielded some surprises. Historians have been searching for several Seafires that were known to be in Syria and derelict perhaps into the 1970s or 1980s, but again the political situations there are fluid and tricky.

Rumours are after its restoration if it is airworthy it will be promptly shot down by spitfires. 😂

they are not becoming too valuable -- what aircraft is too important not to fly? Send the aircraft to people that will "restore" the aircraft properly and only then will you have an aircraft.

Oh! So, you are not going to fly it? Throw it back in the lake then -- it's useless. No one wants to see a pretty stupid plane that can't fly. I want to hear it roar. I want to see it be dangerous.

+Salmon RushDIe There may be chance for another J-88 wreck to be rebuilt to airworthy at another museum, and possibly an He-111. Consider that it's difficult and expensive enough to get the German single-engine types restored (few parts, expensive to fix) so getting a twin flying will be challenging. Money-wise, funding a German twin would also pay for several single-engine fighters for a growing collection.
