Very nice sound. From 1919 to the late 20's the L5 "noise" should heve been common above the Magdalena river in Colombia. Scadta's Junkers F-13 whit floats Connected Barranquilla to Girardot in a 5 hours trip, and then wheeled climbed to the 8,400 feet a.s.l. Bogotá city. Was the golden aviation era in south america. Thanks for sharing the video.

Wow! What an engine! 23 litre strait 6. That would be 3.83 litres per cylinder. Beautiful.

First run was in 1922 and produced an incredible 348.7hp takeoff power and 136 pounds per hour fuel consumption (61.6kg)

It would have run MUCH BETTER with a Prop of the front where it belongs! The weight and Mass of the Prop are a factor for the proper operation of those engines, acts as a flywheel.

This guy needed that engine with his favorite cylinder at compression stroke. Then he had some levered drive to build inertia in the crankshaft.

Awesome beast. How exactly did he start it?- compressed air??

It's cold. It's old. they didnt exactly warm the thing up to operating temperature and it's probably running on 100 year old carburetors (Im sure the condition is fine, but comparing it to a modern fuel injection engine is a bit silly). Besides these things run at pretty low RPMs without any sort of mufflers which can make it sound like its running rougher than it is.

what i do not get, is why do they need to beg, borrow, or steal parts from various museums around where ever if they can just take said part, 3D scan it, then 3D print a mold master so they can cast a brand new part and leave the origional in the museum that is what boggles my mind.
@ppmguire
@ppmguire 10 лет назад
I was thinking the same thing actually.
@JustClaude13
@JustClaude13 10 лет назад
Because they aren't trying to make a replica of the aircraft; they're trying to restore it. So that means, whenever possible, using original parts rather than replicas. It's like how a collector rebuilding a 1955 Jaguar will go to enormous lengths to find and restore an original hose clamp that does the same thing a new hose clamp would do. Except a new hose clamp won't be authentic for a 1955 Jaguar. In this case, the narrator is engaging in a bit of hyperbole. It just means they went to great trouble to locate original parts. They didn't actually steal them, they just found collectors and museums with extra parts they could buy and put back into original service.
@ppmguire
@ppmguire 10 лет назад
I understand that, but I believe they should at least make 3d blue printed replicas to cast in case something does happen to these original parts during these demonstrations. I love classic cars myself, so I fully understand the motion behind authentic parts but then again with that being said to me "all original" would be numbers matching. Again, just another technicality. Nonetheless, still a very cool piece of history and machinery.
@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 9 лет назад
ppmguire Because of costs, especially the paperwork to document that the part conforms to the original manufacturer's specs or exceeds them when required by aviation laws. 3D scanning will reduce the engineering labor though. The restoration expert who overhauled a DB601 commented that a single new casting for the engine was over $20K. Consider the thousands of parts in a single engine.
@ppmguire
@ppmguire 9 лет назад
Sure, and again I understand that, but think about when these parts are gone. Then what? Watch videos like this of what could have been if they decided to print and cast these parts? I'm just saying it would be smart. If they had to steal from everywhere (figuratively) to make one engine go then that means IF something happens to any of those thousands of parts it's dead in the water. Shoulda coulda woulda situation. It would be a shame for this to happen.

@gazlink1
@gazlink1 7 лет назад
idontcare80 Rolls Royce? Byword for shoddy..? Invented almost all of the world's sports. I could go on. What you're speaking about I have no idea. The only thing shoddy about British design and manufacture is bad engineering management at times and overunionisation at times. Otherwise we pull our weight always in the world very, very strongly. British inventors have an impressive history.
@PistonAvatarGuy
@PistonAvatarGuy 7 лет назад
Rolls Royce vehicles don't get driven enough to be horribly unreliable, but they are still unreliable. I'm not a sports fan, sports do almost nothing to advance human society. The British are responsible for quite a few very important inventions, but their mass manufacturing is horrifyingly bad.
@gazlink1
@gazlink1 7 лет назад
idontcare80 Dyson vacuum cleaners? L7 tank gun? Also I'm not talking about manufacturing, I'm talking about design. Manufacturing gets screwed by the overpowerful unions.

Got to hand it to the Germans. Look at the standard of finish on those parts...
@leneanderthalien
@leneanderthalien 4 года назад
at that times was the finish comparable on british and french engines (see Renault "12" series... one of the first was use on the 1917 Breguet XIV, one type , use for reconnaissance, was fitted with a Rateau turbo charger...But during WW2 was the finish from the german engines realy ugly in comparision with for ex. the RR merlin...A german "doctor ingenieur " from Mercedes Benz say about the merlin: "i'm not understand how RR is able to built a engine such quality in war conditions"..
