Since 25% of the comments are inevitably going to be about a 2-second clip... 1. Yes, I know Temple of Doom is technically a prequel 2. Temple of Doom is better than Last Crusade 3. I'm not going to read the comments

How can you say that people making stupid decisions is the reason the Jurassic Park sequels don't work and in the same breath say that Temple of Doom is a good sequel?

I have the perfect Jurassic Park sequel pitch: It's the year 2037. Dinosaurs are now living among us in peace and harmony. How, you may ask? Because one day a year, any and all dinosaur crime, including murder, is legal for 12 continuous hours. *Welcome...to The Jurassic Purge!*

I personally don't think that the wonderment of the original Jurassic Park (for those of us who saw it initially) will ever be matched again. You have to remember that no one had ever seen special effects even remotely close to the quality of the first JP. It completely blew us away, and as the characters' jaws dropped at seeing the dinosaurs for the first time, we the audience were just as amazed at what we were seeing. It seemed unbelievable...almost magical. 7 year old me was entranced, and to this day, I've never experienced that same feeling after seeing a film.

The movie's confusion about whether the dinosaurs are heroes or monsters could have actually been really cool if it was intentional, because WE have that same confusion as the audience. We've spent 25 years thinking dinosaurs are wicked awesome even though we always see them murder people. I mean hell, look at the entire history of the Godzilla franchise.

k but just like real life animals if you inprint on them at a young enough age they are not as wild towards you. it happens in real life. Not once does owen every get cocky and just assume the raptors will never turn on him, i mean his first interaction with them in the first movie when he runs in to protect that guy he takes a very defensive and cautious stance. I don't think the point is to show them as potential pets he always respects them and knows how much harm they could do in a moment. It just helps being around for their birth so they associate you as not a threat and are far far less likely to attack you.

In essence, the first film is a complete work of art whose themes and concepts presented are completely explored and resolved. I would argue that none of the sequels present any further arguments, but merely reconfigure superficial elements to create new situations with inconsequential characters. The original film Jurassic Park is a masterpiece that can’t be improved on. That is a testament to the genius of both Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg.

I dislike this idea that any film or any work is a masterpiece that can never be improved. That is how nostalgia glorification ends up taking precedence over objective criteria. What is true is that Jurassic Park did something right, and for the first time (for that it surely deserves recognition) which *to this point* has not been improved on. The lesson that should be taken away, rather, is that sequels for the sake of sequels are a bad thing; a sequel should feel earned, or complete an incomplete story, and should only be executed if it fits in seamlessly and respects the original.

I Really like them. I have problems with them, sure, but overall I love the characters. I love how Kylo Ren is the main bad guy because of how insecure and crazy he is. I love how Rey's parents were nobody pieces of shit that didn't care about her at all, because she defines her path and isn't given a silver spoon in this story. I loved Luke's conflict and reasoning. They are pretty good movies in my opinion. Rogue one and Solo on the other hand, aren't memorable at all and are really average.
@adamfrederick9643
@adamfrederick9643 6 лет назад
I like what they've done so far. THE FORCE AWAKENS was a remake, but it was entertaining and introduced a lot of great new characters and lore to the series. THE LAST JEDI would've been perfect without the casino sequence, but otherwise, I like the new directions it took and its setup for the series moving forward. I liked how ROGUE ONE was a WWII espionage movie set in Star Wars and perfectly linked up to A New Hope. And I really enjoyed SOLO. I love Westerns and Solo is essentially a Star Wars western that was very well-written by Lawrence Kasdan.

Having seen Fallen Kingdom already, it was very amusing because the ending of that movie (without spoiling anything) was basically Jeff Goldblum saying "SEE I WAS RIGHT, STOP MAKING DINOSAURS" Ironic that not only is one of the main characters in-universe effectively arguing against what the filmmakers are doing with the franchise, they flat-out ACKNOWLEDGED it in the movie and still went ahead with it

One thing I think really works about the original is that it’s a very small film, in a sense. You have a small core cast of characters who all interact and relatively stay together on a team. Compared to the hordes of crowds and ensemble cast that hardly interact and don’t get enough time to have fleshed out stories. Keep it small somehow.

nonsense. you just need to add love triangles. on a slightly more serious note, it could be interesting. PETA activists trying to protect dinosaurs vs govt soldiers on a mission to eradicate all dinos. story could be simple, too many thrillriders going there and getting themselves killed, govt soldiers going in to eradicate dinos, PETA sabotaging their efforts, resulting in people getting killed, what results is a predator-style romp through the jungle, where soldiers are trying to save the PETA people from themselves, interesting arguments could ensue, like it's wrong to kill the dinosaurs, vs they should have never existed in the first place. you could have scenes where soldiers saving PETA guy from velociraptors, and PETA guys crying over the dead dinosaur. it'd be hilarious.

@WedgeOfSpite
@WedgeOfSpite 6 лет назад
You mean beyond one sequel? because Terminator 2 and Aliens are AWESOME. Two of the best action movies of all time. Though I grant you that Alien is more of a horror/mystery film, and Aliens is a kick-ass action film, so tonally as a sequel, it is a bit jarring. But the lore, characterization (s) from Alien, are carried out well, and make sense in Aliens, which is completely unlike the subsequent sequels or, shudder, those wretched prequels (sorry, Patrick, Alien: Prometheus and Covenant sucked inside out).
@VicenteTorresAliasVits

@WedgeOfSpite: One might argue that TERMINATOR 1 is also more horror than action compared to TERMINATOR 2.
@ThierryVerhoeven
@ThierryVerhoeven 6 лет назад
Exactly. These two sequels work because they pretty much redo the first one, but with a different style and tone. It resulted in great films, but remaking the first one with a twist is not really franchise building. It's no coincidence both franchises never managed to churn out another great entry.
@namegoeshere5220
@namegoeshere5220 6 лет назад
Thierry Verhoeven It's not impossible...it's just missing the point that ruins it. Companies just throw directors and money at them to get franchises to make toys and stuff to make more money. Spielberg only did JP2 to make a passion project movie, if I remember correctly. Those three franchises you mentioned are partially horror. Terminator is basically a slasher movie with a robot, Alien and JP are monster movies with natural (not supernatural) animals. The sequals after the first sequals just turn them into schlock action movies.

I think Jurassoc Parl III could have worked - IF they had focused on the kid getting stranded and having to study and learn about the dinosaurs in order to survive. That would have covered both horror and awe. And Sam Neill's character should have only turned up in the last third. And no stupid mercenaries.
@Boltscrap
@Boltscrap 6 лет назад
IndoFilm484 The whole problem of JPIII was that there was no plot, that's actually true, what we have all seen was cobbled up from different plotlines and filmed scenes into something that resembles a movie. It's a damn shame too, considering that any of the purposed plots would have at least given the movie focus if they had stuck with it through the production.
@eXcommunicate1979
@eXcommunicate1979 6 лет назад
I would have made it something like 'The Martian', where a really resourceful and intelligent ADULT has to figure out how to survive after being stranded on the island. The setup would be that 10 years after the events of JP1, InGen or some other company has convinced the world that they had the island under control. Perhaps instead of a "theme park" experience they are selling safari tours onto the island and that goes haywire. Dunno. But either way, I would have gone 'The Martian' route. I also would have had the T-Rex show up at the end when the humans were scared out onto the beach, and have a final fight against the Spino. The original "climax" of the Spino storyline in the film was some serious weak sauce. The "Costa Rican Marines" showing up at the end was ludicrous. lol

you're right about the book, but the whole going of island part, is just spielbergs way of saying "i really like this 1930's king kong movie" just watch this and you'll see. It's the same story, even the ships have the same name " ss venture", they send a team on an island, but it was just a trick, to capture the "king of the island" and bring it to the big city, were people shall gaze in wonder, but it breaks loose and kills every one. But I'm with you, they should have stuck to the book, it's way better. By far.
@remnantviscera4137

I found the book a bit disappointing compared to the first. Partly because it begins by killing off one of the best characters of the first book unceremoniously (the lawyer) and bringing Malcom back to life. Perhaps an unusual opinion, but I honestly found Malcolm to be just about the worst character in the first book. I can only read so many chapters of a barely conscious self obsessed sycophant talk about how inevitable a fairly convoluted situation is. I get the theme of the book, but the blind lack of self awareness of how preachy those parts come off is less than fun. Malcom was toned down a bit in annoyingness in the sequel book, though, which is a saving grace. It’s generally a good book, but honestly I found the discussion about what was happening on the island ended up being a lot more interesting than the actual characters. The film sequel definitely has a more interesting ending. But the rest of it is pretty inferior to the book. I’d just recommend people read the first book and keep in mind that no one will judge you for flipping forward a few pages during the Malcom scenes.
@belias360

Malcolm wasn't annoying to me. He was brought there as a consultant and did his job. The park was a bad idea, and the people were idiots to try to capitalize off of them. I'd be preachy and annoyed too if people were getting eaten left and right because they didn't listen to me, an expert.

I'd say we can still empathize with the leads in the sequels because in Malcolm's case, he's just there to tell them how stupid they're being and to leave immediately, while Grant is, like you said, basically kidnapped.

The "don't try to control nature" moral just doesn't add up when you look at the actual events in the film (JP1). The animals didn't escape, they were TURNED LOOSE by Nedry's poor planning. Similar things could have happened if he had turned loose a bunch of crocodiles, and lions, and sharks into a water park, yet would we come away with the moral of the story being "don't try to control nature"? No, the moral of the story is don't fuck your employees or they'll fuck you. lol In reality, if Jurassic Park were possible, there's no damn way the parent company would skimp so badly on security and fail safes. They just wouldn't. JP1 is a wonderful movie, but there were so many implausible mistakes made that another moral of the story could be: hire competent planners.

I fucking love Jurassic Park. The problem is that it's one those movies that really doesn't need a sequel. I would give The Lost World a pass because it too was based on Crichton's books. Loosely. The rest of the sequels are unnecessary, and the dinosaurs have gone from being uncontrollable animals to being pure rampaging monsters whose favourite meal is not other dinosaurs, but almost exclusively tiny us, and they hunt us relentlessly - even when their whole whole 'world' is literally blowing up around them. They are tired and stressed out, and they need to be left alone already.

"They keep...going...back." Reminds me of how I feel regarding every single Terminator film following T1 and T2: "They keep...trying...to bring...Arnold back." That to me is Terminator's ultimate crutch: it should be about the story of John Connor trying to become the leader of the human resistance, but the film was saddled long ago with Arnold being the big-name star, and T3 just gave into that fandom and brought him back again...and since then, more people just go on the Arnold name-brand recognition, rather than be interested in the actual story...of which the writers can never seem to make it interesting!" Some really like Genisys, but really, Genisys just feels like internet fanfiction, of someone mashing together the first 2 Terminator films, replacing Eddie Furlong with a young and bossy Sarah Connor, and making Arnold out to be THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTER IN THE FILM! And John? Well, noone really liked him so they made him a Terminator! *what a twist!*

I've always been quite interested in seeing how a functioning park would work when things are running as intended and nobody's making stupid decisions for the sake of movie logic. I think one of the biggest drawbacks, if not outright missteps of _Jurassic World_ is that it reinvigorated the awe of _Jurassic Park_ by having a functioning park -- even if the creatures within weren't as interesting themselves as they were the first time around since they keep using the same old and increasingly outdated designs -- and introducing a few interesting elements like the human-raptor relationship and hybridized dinosaurs, but then scuttling all of it for the sake of same ol', same ol' monster carnage for 2/3 of the film. Much of the original novel was just describing the day-to-day activities within the park; I don't see why having a smaller scale movie focused more on the ethics of genetic engineering and zoo animal maintenance in the context of the _Jurassic World_ universe couldn't work. Plus you could also invoke one of the criticisms of the _Jurassic World_ series (why the "dinosaurs" look inaccurate) and create some sort of corporate conspiracy angle out of that; Wu's line in the actual movie treats the entire premise as just a throwaway bit of meta excuse to the science-minded critics of the film itself who pointed out how outdated the creature designs were and lambasted Trevorrow's decision to actively be regressive under the veil of "It's science fiction, not a documentary."

15:30 The Jurassic Park novel, from which the movie is adapted, opens with that very scenario. A series of strange animal attacks in Costa Rica, and Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler are contacted to identify the creature responsible for the attacks. Not only that but a good part of the novel focuses on Alan and the kids trying to return to the visitor center because they had knowledge of some velociraptors stowed away on a cargo ship, and they needed to contact the ship to prevent them from making port on the mainland. Quite frankly, the original book contains a lot of material not included in the movie that could be used for a promising sequel, but it's never used. Instead what the studio gives us in all the sequels is cliched textbook monster movies.

But it feasts on human flesh (maybe it sleeps during the day? That way all the horror scenes with it active are at night) and could risk costing this man every thing he loves. If we really cloned dinosaurs, I have no doubt we'd be able to handle them in a theme park like setting. Remember that it wasn't nature that got out of control, it was one employee, Nedry, who caused the park to go under. He unleashed the animals due to his poor planning and greed. (In the film) the animals didn't escape their pens, they were let loose. Any real such park would have so many fail safes it would be more secure than Fort Knox.

It's insane how your final point was that a good sequel could be made if you got the dinosaurs off the island (NOT for a stupid reason like people were inanely trying to help) and had them coexist somehow with human society. And Dominion literally did that, but, obviously, SO BADLY. Like it's so simple and yet just that one sentence they managed to fuck up multiple times. CLONE GIRL release them because she's a clone (okay???) and then instead of having the movie be about dinos in human civilization it was about LOCUSTS. And somehow ANOTHER dinosaur park. Colin Trevorow PLEASE. And I think you make an excellent point about recapturing both wonder and common sense in JP sequels in order to make them good. Camp Cretaceous actually really excels in both areas if you're interested in ACTUAL good JP sequel material. It's Jurassic Park's criminally underrated TV show on Netflix. It takes place during the events of Jurassic World (and after) about a group of camp kids surviving on the island after the Indominus Rex massacre. It does a fantastic job of recreating the wonder and horror of the original, because you get 3 episodes of the kids being enchanted by the dinosaurs before havoc breaks loose. Then the horror kicks it, because, dinosaurs. But also because they're a group of unsupervised kids trying to navigate a deadly island when it's VERY CLEAR to them that the theme park is poorly managed. It also does a good job of giving the kids realistic, believable motivations for their actions when they do stupid things. Mainly, being a kid makes you do dumb things, but each of the characters differs so wildly from the next that all their dumb kid actions are motivated by completely different things. It really feels like the show is looking directly at the sequel movies and saying THIS IS WHAT YOU DID WRONG. That's my Camp Cretaceous plug for the day. It's a genuinely fun show with some of the best character development I've seen in ages. And there's a ton of fun dino content. Lots more can be done with dinosaurs when the show is fully CG.

The proper Jurassic Park sequel(s) is a silent film shot like a nature documentary as we follow the dinosaurs living their lives; and we watch people on the island trying to survive. So us watching a voice over or a person breaking the 4th wall while he watches people on the island interact with the dinosaurs.
