Love how Muldoon keeps his cool. He's just as terrified as the others but like the badass he is he is just trying to get that object farther away than it appears
Thanks to watching JP1 as a kid, more than one person has commented over the years on how many quips I make under stress. I learnt it from the master. I doubt I’d ever come up with anything that good were I to ever wake up in a ruined toilet block with a badly broken leg and PTSD. I’m quite fond of, “Please, chance it,” as well.
The shaking glass/puddle of water goes into history as one of the most iconic scenes of any movie. It is in many ways, emblematic of the whole Jurassic franchise.
Unpopular opinion: My favorite part of this scene is seeing the look sheer excitement and almost joy on Robert Muldoons face after realizing he "Beat" the Tyrannosaur .
I don't see why that is unpopular, me personally but I enjoyed when Rexy pushes over the big tree just as they are getting into the jeep, but I get your train of thought :)
I always noticed his little laugh and smile too. But it's not my favourite part lol. If anything all my favourite parts in the JP saga involve the Trexes. They are just too damn cool and the effects crew did a fantastic job with its design, the head looks so scary but also beautiful, the feeling i get when watching male lions. They also did an excellent job with the cries. I also love the cry of the male Trex in JP2, sounds like an alien like monster. perfect
Unfortunately he passed away due to cancer, if not his character was supposed to survived. He is 1 of coolest side character in JP, even till his very end
@@ardi1606 Rex wouldn’t be classified as a monster as it does have self control over itself and has some bits of compassion, the hybrids however? They’re monsters forced to exist out of nowhere by humans
The Trex has helped out mutiple times, Jurrasic Park 3, and Jurrasic World. They are not monsters just hungry and I doubt that park has enough for it to consume considering its nothing to a TRex natural habit
I love the slow reveal of Malcolm’s character. He starts as this charming but slightly slimy flirt, but as things go to shit you start to see a hero; when he jumps out of the car with the flare to save Grant and the kids, and in this scene where he instinctively puts his arm across Satler to protect her
@Shana Jackson I don't think you would've been calm as a water when there is a hungry T-Rex breathing down your neck and had just came REALLY DAMN CLOSE TO EATING YOU
@@ELVendedor5000 purely unintentional and he was trampled over. Not anything regarding ethics. The incident falls inline with his beliefs in chaos theory.
John Hammond: “All major theme parks have delays. When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked!” Ian Malcolm: “Yeah, but, John, if The Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists.”
In fairness, by Jurassic World she's over 20 years older and hasn't had to really exert herself or flex her power for a long time. Here, though, she's in her prime.
@@lordrhino7026 She's not fully grown there yet, she weighs about 7-8 tons, and in Jurassic World she weighs 9 tons. Let's say Rexy in Jurassic Park is approximately 16-18 human years old.
@@geoffwilliams4478 😂😂 no no it's a quote from The Lost World. As Sarah's camera starts making noises the baby stegasaurous starts yelping, right before attracting the attention of the adult dinos
"You know when Disney Land first opened nothing worked..." "Yeah, but Jon .. if the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't EAT the tourists.. " xD Jeff Goldblum is a meme
@@Perich29 Independence Day isn’t an attraction at Disney world. That’s the whole point of the joke. You can’t just make random other films and try to make the same joke or be included in the joke. Jurassic park was an attraction / theme park. Disney world is an attraction / theme park. The dinosaurs are at the theme park, PoTC is at the theme park. See how they relate? Independence Day is a movie about an alien invasion. See how that doesn’t fit? “They also won’t come out of the see and attack Japan like Godzilla”. See how that just doesn’t work?
Oh yeah it was hard. Four of the handlers were eaten, two had some limb cut off. Some 23% of Jurassic Park's budget went to worker's compensation for the animal handlers.
MIKE ZEROH Actually, it was a combo of both CGI and animatronics. For scenes where the t-rex was standing around and roaring, they literally used a large giant T-rex robot created by Stan Winston. For scenes where the T-rex was running, fighting, and hunting, they used CGI. Pretty good effects too because it's difficult to tell the difference between the two different animation styles.
To me, Laura Dern's delivery of "Shit! Shit! SHIIIIT!!!" is one of the things that totally sells this scene. That's exactly what you'd be saying in this situation and exactly how you would say it.
Absolutely agree. One time I was riding my bike and ran headlong into a car. I really thought for a half-second that I was going to die. I said it EXACTLY like that.
Random Fact: I would sometimes listen to this scene while jogging through my neighborhood practicing for my Track and Field team, and pretend I was being chased by a T-Rex It was REALLY effective
If that’s still something you’re into, I’d really recommend the app Zombies! Run. A similar sort of thing but you’re being chased by zombies instead of dinosaurs. And the plot line is amazing.
Some great funny lines in this scene : "I'm fairly alarmed here" "Must go faster" "SHIT SHIT SHITTT" "Get off the stick, bloody move !" "Think they'll have that on the tour ?"
One of the greatest moments in movie history. I just love the slow buildup from the stomps, to the panic in Malcolm’s voice, to the MIGHTY ROAR!!! Absolutely spine-chilling! This will always be the best Jurassic Park film!
I agree! I was able to watch this a few weeks ago on the big screen in a cinema, and even though I’ve seen this movie 1000 times, this scene was even better on the big screen with the theatre sound. I think this is what is missing from the other JP/JW films, HORROR. Malcom’s wit quickly fades into fear with his 2nd encounter with REX, Laura Derns terrifying scream, and Muldoon’s smug triumphant smirk after getting away! The sound of the Jeep engine in overdrive and the clever “Objects in Mirror are Closer than they Appear” Genius filmmaking magic!
+Angela Loggins Babies don't come out of the stomach, they would be corroded over there by the high quantity of hydrochloric acid; on the other hand, babies develop in (and come out of) the uterus.
Terrifying part of this is that whenever you hear the trembling footsteps of T-Rex and no longer hearing it's load roars anymore, that means it's getting closer and closer to you until it was already too late to notice...
I went to watch the first Jurassic Park movie back in 1993 when I was 8 years old and was totally gripped by the film. I was actually very nervous when watching some of the scenes in the film. The T rex breakout and the scene with the Raptors in the kitchen hunting the kids were two scenes where I was on the edge of my seat. It’s my favourite all time movie and I will never get bored of watching it.
Leslie moolovesyou UGH. Now I want to see JW really bad again. I loved it so much... did you enjoy it? What did ya think of the Indominus Rex? I'll be honest, she scared the crap out of me. She was just so terrifying for some reason to me!
A.M. Arteaga I didn't hate the movie. :) I still like the first one the best, but I have to admit the whole trained raptor thing was pretty cool, when he whistles and they sick him....or her. lol
i wouldn't i can drive a stick better then a automatic i used to drive my dads manual 1992 chevy truck when i was 8 years old sitting in his lap i could also reach the cluch peddle. i'm 18 now so ive been driving stick shifts for 10 years
Dr. Love 1987 -- That's the beauty of practical effects and ILM being so meticulous about their work. I think Jurassic Park has 10% CGI, and 90% physical effects. Physical effects are always going to age gracefully compared to digital effects.
besides, i notice today's cgi effects focus more in the moving of the animal and not so much in the visuals. They make them move a lot more than they used to in this film, so now it doesnt look natural moving, it looks more like a videogame, they move now even more than actual real animals do.. plus the cameras move a lot today too, the whole scenes look like they were all filmed in a green screen studio, and back in the day it was all analog, it was real, everything was made with steady cams held by people, it felt natural, they would show the characters point of view, that made it feel like a horror movie, not an souless action movie
Like the other comments said, practical effects don't age as badly as outdated CGI, I noticed on rewatch that a lot of the CGI moments looked obviously fake, as opposed to the animatronics which had more realistic movement, color and texture.
I noticed that the T-rex even as she is young in this movie actually started to run slowly and it wasn't until Malcom said "must go faster" that she herself started to pick up the pace. Its also easy to not notice that she actually didn't run after them for very long, it was about a minute long burst of speed, half of which she was either trying to flip them over or pick up the pace and after that she gave up. So it was a realistic chase as much as it was an awesome scene :) If you must rationalize how Claire outran her, keep in mind that Claire likely turned a bunch of corners and that the downtown T-rex kingdom wasn't very far from the plaza where the fight broke out, so even though Rexy was older, it was also the she had to likely turn corners, decelerate and then pick up the pace all over again each time.
0:58 I remember seeing this scene with my dad when I was about eight years old. He nudged me in the ribs, and said "That's what's known as Perspective-based humor."
+musicaltheatergeek79 So, at 58 seconds, the camera jumps to the point of view of the driver (aka, first person perspective). For a couple seconds, the audience is seeing the chase through the driver's *perspective*. The humor is the clever nod to the "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" disclaimer that is on most side view mirrors. The T-Rex looks like it's already getting very close, but we know because of the disclaimer that it is actually closer than it appears to be from that perspective. Hope that helps! It's a very clever little moment.
This will always be that one movie you can put on and admire and still be in awe of the everything about why you love movies moment. Laura Derns character screaming “SHIT!” multiple times like a Dinosaur is really chasing her really does something for me. I wonder if she realizes how much of an impact she made in this particular scene
And not only that, when she realized that the first dinosaur she was gonna see on the Tour in the Explorer was Dilophosaurus after the tour guide announced it's name, she excitedly exclaimed, "Shit!" Now with her first time seeing Rexy, she frighteningly screams that same word. lol
I admire Laura Dern alot in not just this iconic scene but in the entirety of JP1. She portrayed Ellie Sattler beautifully in every aspect. Her display of fear in this masterpiece is impeccable.
0:42 "Hey Jeff, can I have your autograph?" 0:51 "Don't run! I'm a fan" 0:58 "I loved you in The Fly.." 1:22 "Well fuck you then! Never meet your heroes" *sobs*
It's so funny how the scene starts out at the road with the electric vehicles and broken fence, then as soon as Malcolm starts freaking out they're on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere with no fence and the jeep parked in the opposite direction.
Earlier in the movie, they said they clocked the T Rex at a max speed of 35 mph, this Jeep took a long time to accelerate and get faster than 35 mph. Most cars these days can do 0-60 in less than 10 seconds.
Depending on the engine and gearing, that model of jeep could probably go 0-60 in about 10 seconds, just not on a muddy and rutted road. 90s jeeps with the 4.0L Inline 6 cylinder were fairly quick for an SUV.
Most ambush predators that have speeds like that can hit that speed in about a second or two, theygenerally have much better acceleration than cars that need their gears changed up. So for the first couple of seconds of the chase the rex is much faster than the jeep and catches up as muldoon floors it in 1st or 2nd, then when hes ready to shift up the rex is so close you get the bit with malcolm sitting in the gear stick. Mechanically; yes a jeep can outperform a rex,but remember the jeep is only as fast as the driver allows it to be, and the driver can panic or have passengers who are panicking
As a manual transmission vehicle your upshifts must happen in perfect timing with no interruptions, Ian accidentally shoved the stick in this scene causing the jeep to downshift and slow the vehicle down and giving Rexy time to catch up to them until Robert can drive up top speed
@@julianramirez8593 Your point is true, but Ian's pushing of the stick would only drop the Jeep into neutral, not downshifting (unless Robert happened to be clutching at that moment). The loss of acceleration should have made the Jeep easier to catch.
Perhaps not better than "all" CGI nowadays, but certainly better than a lot of them. There was a huge investment in this movie, thats why. They did it with time and care. Lets not forget 75% of the scenes were indeed robots, but this was not, it was CGI indeed, and very well done for the time.
This is by far my favorite scene out of the whole movie! The way she screams "SHIIIIIIIT SHIIIIIIIIT!" And the scream she does at 1:14 kills me everytime!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rick Sanchez I honestly thought she said “Shift!” as a kid given that they were driving a manual transmission (maybe it was also the version on ABC, so, I don’t think it was that far off given the possibility of it being censored).
This is one of my favorite and yet most chilling scenes in the entire Jurassic Park movie. I remember that this scene in particular scared the crap out of me when I was younger, and even now, it's still pretty intense. Spielberg knew what he was doing when it came to creating suspense.
I like the warden's smile at the end. It reminds me of Indiana Jones and the motorcycle chase scene in Germany in the Last Crusade. The facial expressions played always a big role in Spielberg's movies.
williv My favorite part of the movie was T-REX she was the star since all the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were Female and T-REX was in all four flims of Jurassic Park! Laura Dern was great in this and the book is even better*** Have you seen Jurassic World which is great! Have you taken the Jurassic Park quiz?
Wait correction there buddy, in ISLA SORNA aka site B (LWJP, and JP3) had both male and females ISLA NUBLAR (JP, JW, and JWFK) has all females and I believe some of them where males
If you play it in .25x speed at the part when the Trex tries to tip over the keep, she makes contacts with Ellie and Ian almost gets flown out . Amazing detail.
Yeah, the special effects and sound design is awesome, yeah, Jeff Goldblum is at his brilliant best as always, but for me, Laura Dern just absolutely KILLED it in this scene!
She's also the only one in this scene credibly acting afraid of a massive, carnivorous dinosaur. Great movie but boy does Jeff Goldblum's performance get old.
Wancroc Slayer In actuality, they can't run more than 15 mph, and that's for bursts. When this movie came out, it was believed the could run 30 mph or even 40 mph in one long burst.
The amount of energy required to make that huge body move that fast would likely kill the rex if the prey got away. Can't see how they thought that was possible.
I think, the Thing is quite simple. "Today" at Jurassic World, Rexy is over 20 years old. Ok nobody knows, how old Dinosaurs can be, but i think, JW Rexy, is a "Grannysaurus-Rex" now. Of Course, she cant run anymore like as a Teenager ;)
I remembered watching this movie when it first came out while on a family reunion in Maryland along with my cousins, nephews, and nieces, who most were 6-12 yrs. old. This scene made everyone scream, while another kid next to me was jumping out of his seat with his legs and arms flairing all over the place. But throughout the entire scream fest, my then 6 yr. nephew calmly but delightedly said to me: "Boy, this is the best part of the movie ever, Uncle Ardy!" Indeed it was... :)
The amount of thought and detail that they've put into this movie is epic! Watch closely at 0:44 - Just after the Trex pops out, while it roars, you can see that it blinks!
Daniel Louro Yeah when I got older I noticed that the editing in some parts of this movie is really bad. Look at the cut at 0:32 Like it feels like there was meant to be another scene showing Ellie and Muldoon heading for the jeep before that one or something.
Such a simple scene. No frills, just pure adrenaline. Notice how in the later movies it was always about the next baddest incarnation yet they all felt hollow? I still get my heart rate up watching the original, yet hardly anything with the World movies.
+Tommy Stedham Jeff Goldblum had the best line in the whole movie. I was the only one in the theater laughing after that line. Yes, they'll have THAT ONE on the tour. Toilet paper costs extra. lmao
