I enjoy Fury Road more when I think of Tom Hardy actually playing the feral boy from Mad Max 2 ultimately naming himself Mad where he had no name before. And that somewhere out there is the the real Max played by Mel Gibson and their paths will eventually cross again.

Great video. Now my favourite physical media channel, not just your incredible knowledge which I’m learning a lot from but even how impressive your video, audio and editing is. Very impressive, very rarely I have notification bell on but definitely for you. Would love to see a collection video one day, whether it’s just 4K/blu rays and film collection or both or separate. Great channel and great video! I love how much you love true film, I am the same!

Very nice of you Dean. This one ended up being more like a 4K disc film review programme but I didnt intend to waffle on so much. I did show quite a bit of my film collection in the Super 8 video a few months back. Many people asked me to make that one but it wasn't exactly the biggest thing I've ever done. When it comes to the DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K discs though, they're rather all over the place with many in cupboards and even quite a few out of the boxes on spindles to save space. I don't think I'd be very interested in showing the whole lot and would find it difficult to enthuse so maybe one day I'll just show some pans along a few shelves or something. John.

Mad Max: Fury Road - I watched this on DVD for my first viewing at a friend's house and didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped. When I finally got around to seeing it in 4k UHD, it truly changed my view of the film. Being able to take in its bold visuals - at their best - made a huge difference in my experience. Perhaps it was for a reason similar to what you mentioned: it's the first of the Mad Max films I'd seen, and I had little knowledge of its world before diving in.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 2 года назад
I really wasn't enjoying the film but by the end of it I had realized that the special effects were real for the most part and I felt it deserved a second appraisal... so I watched the opening again and went through quite a lot of it for a second time. It's a flawed film but it's spectacular. One of the comments on here made a great point about Tom Hardy being a child actor in Mad Max 2 and he apparently christened himself 'Mad' in the end (might have been 'Max') and so the Mad Max in this film may not be the character played by Mel Gibson but a completely new Mad Max who was influenced at a young age by the Mad Max he met as a young boy. For me, that makes the whole film a lot more interesting. John.

Wow John some unbelievable pickups you got my friend. Ready player one is a very special movie for nostalgic reasons and probably my favourite movie of that year. As soon as I heard Spielberg was behind this movie I knew it was going to be something special. The Jurassic World franchise is quite enjoyable but I have to admit they are nothing near as good as the original trilogy. But I have high hopes for the next one. Especially because Sam Neill Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum are back in them. I'm so happy you enjoyed V for Vendetta because that was a risk sending that to you because I didn't know how you would take the movie. Mad Max Fury Road is very very special and probably one of the finest 4K discs out they. They are making a prequel to Fury Road called Furiosa. But unfortunately Charlize Theron is not going to be in it. Thanks again John for the shout out. Really means the world to me my friend

Thanks for sharing. Mad max fury road is quite striking at times, but I agree with you it takes some time to get into the plot/backstory. I'm usually not able to afford those fancy collector sets so I don't pay them much attention. That V for Vendetta is quite lush though so enjoy!! Leon at Leon Talks Film has done a very nice review of True Romance and has got a lot of views on it too. I think that disc should be rather good Theo if you haven't enjoyed it already. The Dark Knight trilogy is among the best available with the third film having so much genuine IMAX film that it has the edge over the other two. Sound is rather amazing too. But I don't have the other two titles you've purchased. That V For Vendetta pack is special. I'll be keeping an eye out for these Titans of Cult releases in the future as a result because apparently they do sell out rather quickly. John.

Another great video John. I was very pleased to see Doctor Sleep on your shelf and your comments regarding it at the end. Normally I'd say watch the theatrical and them Directors Cut but seeing as it is a sequel to The Shining and everyone wants you to watch Doctor Sleep I would definitely go with the Directors Cut...The overall consensus online is that it is superior to the theatrical cut and I would agree, with better character development...and you get longer in a certain Hotel too😉 😊 Just a shame the Directors Cut is on the standard bluray only...really don't see why some studios do this??? It does have awesome PQ though. I have Ready Player One and I thought that had one of the best Atmos soundtracks I've ever heard. That first race at the beginning with King Kong seriously tested my equipment, especially my Sub😁
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
I don't tend to watch so-called Director's Cuts but maybe one day I'll take a look at it. I can't think of a single Director's Cut I've seen that I prefer to the original version. Gawd knows what I'd have thought of Blade Runner when I first saw it if it hadn't have had the narrative to explain what on earth was going on! So, I'll see what my first impression of Doctor Sleep is and if I don't do a dedicated review I'll include it in something sometime soon. I tend to get different sound here with THX Ultra 5.1. If I had a bigger room I could add more of the tripole rear speakers (if I can find them second hand but they do pop up for sale occasionally) but I wouldn't be able to suspend them from the ceiling so there is no way to go genuine Dolby Atmos. As it is the sound is already remarkably similar to Dolby Atmos and I suspect Dolby took their inspiration from THX and wanted to create something similar without the need for a massive outlay. Ready Player One sounded fabulous but all five of these films did. Mad Max: Fury Road was the stand out of them though - or at least it was in our little home cinema. John.

I own all of these discs though have not found time to watch them all yet. (I have probably 400 4K discs I haven’t watched yet, sadly). V for Vendetta is on that list of films to rematch in 4K. The lava in the second Jurassic World film looks so good in HDR that I wanted all movies with lava to be redone to take advantage of HDR similarly. Ready Player One had some scenes that looked stellar in HDR and many others that I thought were a let down. The sound mix is frequently awesome.

Great reviews. Ready Player 1 and Mad Max are reference quality 4k transfers. Just saw V for Vendetta 4k and was impressed with details and black levels. Jurassic World was not as good as I remembered and transfer was lacking. almost forced myself to finish the movie. looks like we agree!
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
Ready Player One didn't look brilliant here Luis but all our systems are different and what looks great in here may only look good somewhere else and vice versa. It certainly sounded fabulous though. The first Jurassic World film was lacking a few things and most noticeable I think was high quality computer rendering which meant we found some of the dinosaurs difficult to discern. The second film was much better in this regard as well as story telling and characters and was much easier to watch. Maybe I'll change my mind on a second viewing but that was the impression we both had this time. John.

After comparing my dts laserdisc of Jurassic park to the 4K of jurassic World fallen kingdom I have to say this 90s kid loved it more than the original. I’m glad you also think the 4K is great! I think the dedication to the practical effects when compared to the original is so vastly superior it’s the type of film making is like to see more of. When I saw it in theaters I was blown away but the 4K on disc looks almost identical to my local cinema. Shame as that theater is now closed
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
There's nothing like seeing a film in a busy cinema on a big screen though. Okay, someone kicking your seat from behind, talking through the movie and noisily unwrapping sweets can be somewhat distracting but overall a trip to the cinema to see a film is usually a bit special. But the quality of video for the home market now is going to make some question the value of cinema. Covid-19 won't have helped the situation but now that we're almost through it maybe there will be pent up demand and we'll all return to the theatres in droves. I really liked Fallen Kingdom. I think having the old style methods of film making combined with the new is the best way to make a film that requires a lot of special effects. With the money these films made, they can certainly afford to invest in them that way. John.

Afternoon John. Got to agree with everything you said about Ready Player One, difficult to follow at times and a brilliant recreation of The Shining. My only complaint about Mad Max Fury Road is that the film is sped up at times making the actors movements look unnatural to me. George Miller mentioned it somewhere maybe on the disc extras. I got it on 2d Blu-ray and 3d Blu-ray seeing as you gave the 4k disc I might up grade! It's getting to be a bit of a habit, upgrading my Blu-rays to 4K after your reviews.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
The Blu-ray of Fury Road is exceptional so it's probably not worth spending out on the film again unless you see it singing like a bird somewhere (cheap cheap). It's only the HDR that gives the 4K the edge and although it's a pretty big edge, the Blu-ray is plenty good enough. Remember it's a 2K video in the first place. John.

Hi John, A lot of people don't like Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, but for my money it's the best one of the two World films. Some people say the film ends when they get off the island, but believe me it's got hidden depths and layers, the granddaughter that actually turns out to be a clone of his daughter is a great idea that should have been explored further. Also the first Jurassic film to be in 2:40:1.

That's interesting Clive. Ten minutes in my wife and I both agreed that Fallen Kingdom was better than the first Jurassic World film and it didn't let up after that. Ready Player One was a bit thin on the ground at the start as well as Mad Max: Fury Road. Without an opening that draws the viewer in, it's then an uphill battle to engage with the audience. Blade Runner underwent a narrative recording to get over the incomprehensibility of it all back in 1982 and that certainly helped explain what it was all about but now because we all know the story we don't really notice that it's difficult to follow without the narrative. The so-called Director's Cut of Doctor Sleep is not in this double disc pack so I think it was only in the initial batch of 4K packs released. They had a copy in CEX when we were on our Mondo Mooch but as I don't tend to watch extended cuts of films if I can help it, I didn't fancy paying £25 for a second hand disc. Hello, hello! Yet another wonderful review! Everything is on the dot! A strange optical effect took place on viewing of Jurassic World (the 1st movie) in 3D at a theater. In the scene with helicopter flight, the helicopter looked like a toy, and made the rest of the set look like a miniature installation - took the immersion away in an instance. When I saw that moment in a trailer next day, it looked fine. I guess, 3D processing reveals imperfections of the graphics. How come did director not see this? I still could not care less for the latest "Mad Max". I guess it is due to too many overly idiotic grimaces of characters. The old ones were more appealing mostly because of Mel Gibson and Tina Turner, as well as unique and quite new aesthetic at that time. I felt a similar way about "Ready Player One". Even in trailers it looks like an uncontrollable overly-saturated CGI diarea. Forgettable story - a millenial-level teenage drama. The moral of the story is understood and correct - the warning for humanity as well. But, it was not enough to keep us interested. We always strive for story, not for visuals. Even in movies like Matris trilogy, Blade Runner and Terminator we look for the story. I am especially glad we exchanged some ideas about "The Shining", before you saw "Dr. Sleep"! I liked the movie. I love the talent of Ewan McGregor - ever since "Trainspotting". I hope you enjoyed this film as well! Looking forward to your review! As always, very interesting video-essay! Thank you!

Things go wrong with the faux 3D processing Dmitri so it's not ideal to view a film in 3D that wasn't shot in 3D. Actually, 3D does tend to ruin image quality anyway and I well remember seeing the 2K video 'Gravity' at the Waterloo IMAX. It was an amazing movie but the image quality was terrible largely owing to the 3D. The standard Blu-ray projected at home is fabulous so I wish they'd have simply projected the 2K video at 90 feet wide! Fury Road isn't a good film per se but it is an outstanding, stunt laden, action chase film. I can't think of anything else quite like it and although I don't particularly care for the world set up in these Mad Max films I do appreciate the artistry that went into it. It's great to look at, it's just not a particularly good story and the characters aren't up to much. Charlize Theron was impressive though. John.

You are going to be able to paint in a massive screen down there John and I'm rather excited about it. Remind me where you are because my wife and I want to know when we'll be attending the grand opening!!! I did do a home cinema tour video about a year ago but I didn't include the video projector which is an Optoma UHD550X and we've had it for almost four years now. It cost £1500 and the only reason we got it when we did was because our ten year old Hitachi video projector was beginning to get problems. I was hoping to hold on for longer so prices would come down but they haven't exactly plumetted so we didn't do too badly really. These days the entry level projectors start below £1K but the specifications don't appear to be as good as the UHD550X which was basically a cut down of the £3K projector but I quickly had it set up and looking better than the demonstrator £3K projector we were shown to help us to make the decision. At the time there were only 11 of these UHD550X machines in the country so seeing one projecting wasn't possible as they were all in the Richer Sounds warehouse awaiting distribution. I'm looking forward to seeing Doctor Sleep. I am also a Ewan McGregor fan and often decide to see a film on the basis that he's in it. John.

Looked into your projector seems very nice especially for the price I haven’t decided on what projector but I’m going to purchase for the room I had a Panasonic 1080p back in 2008 my friend owns a installation company home theater alarms video cameras all that kind of stuff he’s a JVC dealer and I can get a projector more or less at cost so I’m definitely leaning that way we’ll see. Hope things are OK over there it is ticking up over here and they’re slowly starting to shut things back down my audio club had our first meet since this all started and now they’ve canceled them again always look forward to those anyways looking forward to your next video keep them coming talk to you later john

Germany, France and a few other nations are great car producers but I don't find their products so interesting although Germany have Porsche, Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen of course who have produced autos that are among the best in the world. Modern DVD also appears to have benefitted from current mastering techniques so they can be a surprise too. I haven't purchased many DVDs in recent years but those I have purchased have all been extremely high quality and a few years ago would have been mistaken for Blu-rays. 4K mainly has the edge over Blu-ray due to HDR as our tiny home screens are too small to discern the difference between Blu-ray and 4K if they've come from the same master. Project the discs on a 25 foot wide screen and I expect we'd begin to see the advantage in the 4K but up to that point, probably not. John.

I've lost count of the number of times I've watched Mad Max Fury Road, I watched it 3 times at the cinema and many more at home. I think the practical stunts, costume and world design, and cinematography are outstanding. I also love that the film is essentially one long car chase but has so much going on within that simple premise. Its become one of my favourite films of all time. I have the Jurassic World 2 disk set in my rainy day pile, I will have to get round to watching Fallen Kingdom before the 3rd Jurassic World film is released.

There is no doubt that Mad Max: Fury Road is something special. It may not set the premise up particularly well nor have much in the way of a story but once you know what it's about it is absolutely awe inspiring to look at. What these special effect and stunt people can do on a movie shoot these days astounds me. The second Jurassic World film came across much better than the first film to us. Ten minutes in we both felt we were watching a better film. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I'm glad they decided to go with mostly practical stunts and didn't fill it with CGI, I'm personally of the opinion that some films can rely a bit too much on CGI these days. Not enough of us care for 3D any longerJoe but it is a shame it hasn't stood the test of time... again. It was the best innings it's ever had though and the result is that there are plenty of discs out there to collect in 3D. I have a couple of films in 3D but I rarely seem to run them and never bothered getting any 3D video equipment even if some of the discs I have came with the 3D discs as well as the standard version. One day perhaps as it's all a lot cheaper now than it once was. It's funny to think that back in the 1980s 3D revival we'd go to see a film just because it was in 3D but now if there's a film on in 3D I'll avoid it and go elsewhere to see the standard version. I did see Gravity in 3D at the Waterloo IMAX but it looked terrible. The standard Blu-ray thankfully looks beautiful. Prometheus was another let down in 3D but then the standard Blu-ray came out and it wasn't much better to look at. John.

Ready Player One will probably play better right from the start with knowledge of the story ahead of time. I didn't know anything about it other than it was about a computer game (hence why I tried to avoid it) but once I'd got into it and worked out what was going on I rather enjoyed it. Watching the extras gave me a much greater appreciation and I think I may respect it a great deal more next time I give it a spin. V For Vendetta was a really good surprise. Not only because this unexpected, wonderful package arrived in the post but also because of how much I enjoyed the film. A great looking, well made, atmospheric piece of work. Not one I would ever have watched but really pleased I did. Mad Max: Fury Road is so spectacular and so impressive that I don't care that story and character building are almost non existent! I never saw Beyond Thunderdome by the way and that was because I didn't particularly care for the original film and thought the sequel was worse. I probably won't feel the same way when I see them both again but that was my feeling way back then. John.

That's a fair criticism Art and I almost completely agree but by the end of the film I had realized that just about everything I was looking at was real. The stunts and the action in this film have to be among the best ever committed to.... video! I've responded to quite a few comments to explain that this film might be light on story and character but who cares when you've got amazing stunts and action like this? I think you'll understand what I mean because the film makers were clearly out to make a stunt laden, non-stop action movie and to hell with everything else. They succeeded. John.

@@Dirkschneider Yes, it is simple but only if you have a basic idea of what you're watching. We didn't. I did remember the basic Mad Max post apocalyptic landscape and there being gangs of nutters around but that was it. I didn't know why he was captured, who Furiosa was and why she was stealing the tanker nor who the five wives were etc. It's all obvious once you know but if you don't it's all a bit of a mess.
