Story:
Regulus has been scared before.
When his mother would shout an unforgivable curse or when Sirius was nowhere to be found one morning.
He’d never been this scared though, his parents had held him down, shouting curse after curse while the Dark Mark ingrained itself into his arm. Evan and Barty would come after him, the same mark staining them as it had his cousins.
They had told Dorcas and Pandora together. They’d been as Barty assured them they would be, understanding, swearing an Unbreakable vow at Regulus’s own behest to never tell.
Evan, Barty, and him only told them. Not the Valkyries and certainly not the Marauders.
Regulus had to tell to tell James though, James Potter the secret love of Regulus’s life, he had to know, even if he would forget it.
But the night he was going to tell James he’d fallen asleep in a small clearing while waiting for him.
Then he had a dream.
A very bay dream.
He’d told James what had happened and James look of love dissipated into disgust and disappointment. He’d yelled then, James, “How could you?! We’re done.” Those words had been enough to shatter Regulus’s heart into a million pieces. He’d asked James to hear him out, that it wasn’t his fault, James didn’t listen.
“What did you think would happen? That we would still be together?” James had said, almost in disbelief.
Holding back tears, Regulus spoke; “I thought…maybe you would love me all the same,” James averted Regulus’s eyes. “Even though I’m..A Deatheater.” Regulus finished the sentence, Deatheater hung in the air between them and Regulus could feel the tears pricking at his eyes as he saw James’ face harden into a look of apathy, this had not been what Regulus had hoped.
Good thing it’s not what happened, no, things went down much differently. Though one thing was the same at the end of the dream Regulus smiled and told James he loved him and always would but that James deserved someone better, someone Regulus couldn’t be.
“Obliviate” He whispered thinking of only two things: the mission he knew he wouldn’t come back from and to the start of the letter that was tucked neatly in a book on his table:
“To the Dark Lord,”
