LA has direct flight to Nadi, then you fly from Nadi to Suva, the capital of Fiji. From there you can fly to Funafuti. Yes theory has done it before.

I’d say going through Fiji is the better option since Nadi has a pretty big airport, and Fiji might be a good place to take a break.

The easiest way is to go to Suva, I think the best way to get there from say NYC, is go from NYC to LAX, Then to Nadi (Fiji) then from Nadi to Suva (Fiji) then across into Funafuti. I’m also only aware of only 2 weekday flights of Tuesday and Thursday, from what I’ve heard also that the flights from Kiribati are very inconsistent, they get cancelled a lot from research I’ve done, so I’d go with Fiji airlines.

You should catch a flight first from LA to Suva, then after arriving at Suva you should catch a flight Fiji Link from Suva and you arrive at Funafuti. Why I'm telling you to catch a Fiji Link flight to Tuvalu because it has three service days whereas Air Kiribati has only flight service on Wednesday.

I believe you have flights from Vanuatu as well daily. But they're small 30 seater planes
