This year, I moved into a house where the previous owner had planted an abundance of useful crops. I've been delighted to find peaches, lemon balm, mulberries, jerusalem artichoke, pecans, walnuts, and more, all growing feral even after a few years of abandonment and neglect. It's my pleasure to work off of this foundation and restore those plants to health as well as establishing more, even if I don't stay here for very long. Maybe I won't get to eat any strawberries myself, but I can plant them all around the house and know that the next resident will have the option to enjoy them. No one should be stopped by fear that the hard work will go to waste - some new owners will rip everything out, true, but some of us will take the head start gratefully and keep it producing.

I planted a fig from a cutting and in less than a year with organic fertilizer, I have figs (mulberries too as well as Papayas). So some people might say they are not living in their current residence foever, but this does not matter. Plant trees now.

Figs do amazingly well from cuttings - I planted one five months ago at about 4" tall and now it's over two feet!

@@baddriversofcolga The fig trees I have from cuttings, might be some fast-maturing variety or perhaps it was loads of organic matter I added to it, but I was surprised myself. They are smaller green figs and I am curious to see if they grow to full-size figs in less than a year.

The support stick is for shipping from the distributors to the nurseries, and to protect the trees from wild ones running through the nursery without looking where they are going. That's how we make reservoirs for the tomatoes, with a circle of dirt, so we can fill it up and go to the next ones efficiently. When I was little I dug tunnels under fallen trees, and made pottery from the clay layer and filled them back into the dig site, and braided the lawn in the backyard into intricate mazes, and planted thousands of tops of plants in perfect rows and columns in the sand around the playground, and dammed up the gutter with dozens of dams that slowly filled up from a leaking pipe in the summer, breaking the top one and woooosh!~

I really want the mp3 of your Johnny Appleseed song at the end, so I can blast it across our yard to the neighbors while my 3- and 5-year-old help me dig a big hole to plant a tree. I mean, we can do it without musical accompaniment, no worries. But the song would make it EPIC.

I have 2 fruit trees I'm planting tomorrow. However, I have learned that my soil, isn't the WORST it can be, but is clay. The holes I dig become vessels when it rains. I dug the hole for one of them last week. It rained. It is STILL holding water. So, the solution I'm trying is to create a mini-good dirt biome for every tree I plant. I've made the holes MUCH larger than the root balls. I was basically sitting waist-deep in one of them. My plan is to make a salad for them below, where it will take years to get to yet. Large sticks at the bottom, mixed soil, oak leaves, some mucky stuff from my drainage ditch area( is this a terrible idea? I don't really have compost yet) and then once I've filled the holes, I'm making an above-ground berm with topsoil and pine bark mulch. I plan to use the clay dirt to surround the berm as a basin rim that will degrade over time. Am I going too far? I have fruit trees on the property that were there when I bought it last year, but some have died (peach) and all the surviving ones have trunks covered in lichen, which I understand indicates an issue. I'm guessing the issue is the difficulty the roots have getting through the clay.

Fire and remedy: 1 oz of pure orange oil mixed with 1 gallon of water, poured directly into their nasty little nest. The orange oil dissolves their exoskeletons, and they all die screaming. The water makes sure it gets down into their hill and gets the queen, too. It's truly a wonderful thing.

Would now be a good time to plant freshly rooted fig and mulberry cuttings in 8b? My landlord bulldozed all of my fruit trees to make room for his man cave and I took about 80 combined cuttings of everything. That was at the beginning of August, so everything that's going to root at this point has. Our winters are generally mild, but we have wicked wind, so I'm not sure if I should put off planting them for another year or so (or at least until spring) to let them develop more roots (not that I don't have more cuttings than I need, but I'm really good at killing potted plants over winter because I'm not in full-blown gardening mode and just don't think to check on them... I killed my pineapple guavas and persimmon last winter because I forgot about them.) We're really wet Fall through Spring with heavy soil, if you think that makes a difference.

One thing I tried to do to help my trees out was use a spacing fork to essentially broad fork the bottom of the hole and loosen the soil similar to double digging. It was nice and mounded with the tree well above its previous level but it has since settled back down. What do you think? Waste of time or helpful? The trees seem to be doing well. Also do you think the embankment idea is good for heavy clay? I typically worry more about my trees getting soggy or rot.
@davidthegood
@davidthegood 3 года назад
I think the spading fork is a good idea. If you are planting at a wet time of year in soggy ground, no need for an embankment. You might even make mounds and plant a little higher.

I wish all the people thought and did like you David The Good, my aunt planted a Mandarin orange tree, and it grew well, reached a height of 8 ft. high, the first mandarins it gave her were so sour, but the next year and year after they were sweet n sour, she later rented to 2 tenants, she fell, broke her hip, wasn't able to tend to her Mandarin, you'd think the tenants couldn't had watered the tree, nope not happening, well the tree dried up, no more free mandarins. :( Peach trees and a Rachel Mulberry, hmm...that last tree was the Rachel Mulberry right? For a second its leaves looke kind of similar to the Catalpa's leaves. Thumbs up, thanks for sharing and greetings from Mexico! :)

Jesus Christ saves from sin. Romans 3: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Hebrews 9: 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Isaiah 64: 6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Revelation 21: 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Romans 5: 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. John 3: 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 14: 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Romans 10: 9-10. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Jesus said John 5: 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 1John 5: 10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. Ephesians 2: 8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Romans 8: 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 15: 3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5: 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. ..................................................
