Just Happened! Elon Musk Declared This After INSPECTED Starship Booster. Flight 6 Closer...
The success of Flight 5 is undeniable, and one moment, in particular, stands out-the recovery of Super Heavy by Chopstick. This feat marks the most significant achievement of the mission and sets a new standard for future flights. But now, the big question is: What comes next?
Are there any issues with Super Heavy or Stage 0? And how might this impact future plans, such as the Flight 6 schedule?
Well, SpaceX and Elon Musk have shared an important update following the inspection of Starship Booster 12. The results are promising and pave the way for a bright future ahead.
Let’s dive into these updates in today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
Just Happened! Elon Musk Declared This After INSPECTED Starship Booster. Flight 6 Closer...
As we all know, after seven minutes of operation, Super Heavy B12 was successfully caught by the Mechazilla Arm, marking an incredible milestone for SpaceX and the aerospace industry. This achievement has opened new doors for the future of reusable rockets.
Approximately two hours and 38 minutes after liftoff, Chopstick began lowering the Booster back to the Orbital Launch Mount (OLM). The process was swift, and after just three hours, Booster B12 appeared to be securely placed on the OLM. Another update came eight hours post-launch, confirming that the Booster Quick Disconnect (QD) was successfully connected to B12. SpaceX will likely lift the Booster onto a transport stand next, allowing it to return to the Production Site. The transport stand had already been rolled out to the Launch Site, signaling SpaceX's rapid efforts toward rocket reuse.
Just Happened! Elon Musk Declared This After INSPECTED Starship Booster. Flight 6 Closer...
Meanwhile, the systems beneath the rocket, such as the OLM and water deluge system, appeared to have emerged unscathed. There were no reports of damage to the Ship's QD, despite the noticeable flames when the Booster passed through the middle of Chopstick. These promising updates confirm that both the Super Heavy Booster and the Launch Pad remain in excellent condition after the flight-a conclusion confirmed by both Elon Musk and SpaceX.

It also has to do with fuel burn off like ULA. Also, they call it "Integrated Flight TEST," for a reason. That mission was a success. It's X, they only get better with age. You can only be happy for them. They just gimbled a 200+ booster between two bus size arms. And, they made history AGAIN! Thanks for the episode. -NOM

A 1 hour turn around then reuse sounds ridiculous...but then so did the idea of catching the booster. And before that the idea of reusable rockets at all. Maybe they'll get there, maybe they won't. The higher they aim the further they're gonna get though. Just being able to have this sucker come back to the launch site and catching it is a massive achievement

He literally did the impossible. They all have to be proud of what they have done. This is a true expression of the leadership. Everybody that worked on it was there. You never saw that kind of excitement when Starliner launched. Also the people the media showed was fat bureaucrats is suits. There wasn't one person that really worked on the Starliner. Everyone in the SpaceX building area were people that actually worked on project. From the machine shop to the office. That is a True testament of Elon Musk's leadership. Go SpaceX. I suspect that Elon will find fixing the reentry heating of the booster engines to be a bit lass than easy. One fix might be an ablative shield on the hot stage end and let that lead the reentry until the last minute and then flip. Or heat tiles on one side and belly flop it. Or an ablative drogue to slow it down faster. Or an inflatable ballute. None of which are easy.

@@keiichi8743 I would say no catching of Starship until they resolve and test flaps - on flight 4 and now on flight 5 we have seen, that they overheat/loose tiles etc. Now it needs to be tested with new Starship variant to confirm, that front flaps will be protected from plasma due to moving them backwards. Additionally, they might want to reduce angle of reentry and extend trajectory to reduce the heat. Not to mention testing of those sweet sweet 3D printed Raptor 3s and how they will handle aerodynamic drag heating :D Nevertheless, I wouldn't be suprised to see Ship 6 in the air in next 3-4 weeks

It was awesome to watch it all unfold but if those 3 engines failed to fire, that would have been an interesting landing. One has to wonder what the contingency plan was to try to divert the rocket last minute further towards the water to minimize damage to the launch infrastructure. A dedicated and isolated catch tower would be desirable as the odds of an incident have to be somewhat greater than zero.
@spydude38
@spydude38 8 часов назад
The booster didn't come right down to the chop sticks if you watch the video. It was intentionally brought down slightly away from it and only when the systems checked out did they command the booster to make the move over to the chop sticks. If something was wrong or the 3 engines failed, the booster would not impact the launch tower, thus saving it from damage/destruction.

I wonder if rainbow patina starships will be the norm once reuse begins, that would look pretty cool! SpaceX has some serious challenges ahead pertaining to protecting the booster and the ship, especially the flaps, the chines, the skirt shield and the raptors themselves. I have no doubt that since they've recaptured a booster, the booster will fare exceptionally well in succeeding flights, the same can be said for the ship once it lands in one piece. But I do think they may eventually change the flight profile of the booster considering there's really nothing they can do to protect the engines from re-entry heating.

Not much has been said so far about the explosion but it looked to me like the starship may have actually dipped its bottom end of the rocket into the ocean a few feet or further which may have caused a major pressure imbalance to the thrusters causing the fuel trying to burn to explode instead. The temperature difference between the ship and the ocean would have also been destructive due to thermal cracking. I suspect they were trying to achieve a bit of a hover to simulate a landing pause should there have been a drone ship below it and probably not enough hover for time to cut the engines. It almost looked like the camera could have been submersed due to the hue of the video looking like it entered the water just before the video stopped.
