Just How Powerful is P-8 Poseidon

The P-8 Poseidon is truly a multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft, excelling at anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface warfare; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and search and rescue. The P-8 Poseidon can fly higher and get to the fight faster.
Shorter transit times reduce the size of the Area of Probability when searching for submarines, surface vessels or search and rescue survivors. P-8 Poseidon is also designed for low altitude missions and has already proven its abilities supporting humanitarian and search and rescue missions. Globally proven, the P-8 Poseidon has two variants: The P-8 Poseidon, flown by the Indian Navy, and the P-8A Poseidon, flown by the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force.

I think it was a really good move to use the 737. Having grown up in a Navy town knowing plenty of folks who worked on and flown the Orion's (including my dad) one of the biggest issues was parts availability. Having to scavenge parts off other aircraft or travel long distances to get them etc. -vs- now in a pinch you can get 737 parts pretty easily. Another great thing is that the military guys are super experience on aircraft they can fly commercially when they get out. Although dad used to say that the commercial pilots who were reservists were the roughest on the planes because they could have a little more fun beat on them more than they could the planes they flew at their day jobs

I was an avionics tech on P-3s in the early 1970s. We had a branch officer that was a PPC and he was only an ensign. He went to college in the NROTC program and on his own got a pilots license and flew Charter Electras from Pennsylvania to Florida while in college He told me he didn’t get any FAA certifications from the Navy as he had them all before he went on active duty.

Logistics can be rough on old aircraft. In the late 1970s I was an avionics tech on the Lockheed T-33A trainer. Long out of production by then, we'd sometimes have to scavenge parts from display aircraft at other bases. Only so many old parts to go around.

This is one absolutely awesome airplane. It's an amazing 737 airframe, with the raked wingtips. For what it's used for, it makes the US military front so much stronger. The 737 airframe was the perfect choice by the Navy. The Boeing P-8 Poseidon, has the ability to detect enemy forces from far away. The $180 million dollar price tag, also gives it the ability to be refueled in the air, and stay airborne for long lengths of time.

This just confirms my beliefs that the 737 should have raked wingtips. They make every plane Boeing plane much more beautiful. I know that Boeing says raked wingtips are more effective on wide body planes and they don't want to exceed the wing length for a plane of that class. But come on! They look so good! The P8 is such a scary looking 737. I think the Max is absolutely gorgeous... but I think the P8 looks a bit better. Slap on the Leap engine with chevrons and you'd have one of the best looking planes ever made.

I think what he meant was the Soviet ballistic missile submarines each had a P-3 on station all the time , not every sub like the attack subs. The Soviets had an enormous number of those at sea at a time. They would have had Hotel class, Delta Class, and Yankee class ballistic missile subs at the time. They all required getting somewhat close to the US to fire their weapons. Nowadays , there are enough Russian mobile ICBM's on land that can hit the US to make this possibility of "winning" a nuclear conflict pretty much not possible.

The P8 is a work in progress, when it was contracted by the USN for manufacture, a lot of cost/time savings compromises was made. I t is intended to be to most advance aircraft of it's type in the world. The operational P8 is currently using current proven systems until the more advanced systems is properly developed, which makes sense. The usual route to integrate the latest and greatest usually means cost and time overruns. The USN decided to build it in such a way that it is easy to upgrade as new systems become available. Yes the P8 can fly at very low altitudes as the wings and fuselage has been strengthened. But it cannot do so for long since like all jets flying 50-200 feet will burn through it's fuel extremely quickly. The aircraft has extra power and space to add new/enhanced capabilities. There was talk of adding JSOWs to it, which would turn in into a medium bomber. The NIMROD which was a good platform for it's time is based on the comet which is far older than the 737 on which the P8 is based. How many comets are currently flying around. it must have been a nightmare finding spares for the Nimrods. Also consider that it is safer than the Nimrod design, ie the last Nimrod crash was due to an engine fire which burned through the wings.

@DerivativesDocumentation 2 года назад
@@nzgunnie Wikipedia is ok to get a overall understanding at one place, but is reliability always secondary, as anyone can edit and update info in it. India doesn't have two varients. It is only Poseidon 8i. As far as Poseidon 8A is concerned it's primary user is US Navy, Poseidon 8AGS is US airforce version, Poseidon 8 MRA1 is UK version. An export varient will have customisation and relatively a downgrade version than what US uses, however that doesn't make it significantly inferior. For example, the Initial Indian version didn't have certain weapon packages, and it's more for a surveillance role, however recently US has agreed to sell advanced torpedoes to India. However, it seems that the feedback received from this plain is excellent for Indian Navy as it has 12 aircraft in inventory with 8 additional in order. For a common people, we will never know how close these export varients are to US version. It's classified info.

Maybe because the friendship with the two countries is one of convenient only in the eyes of US politicians. US look at Indian as a counter to China. India look at the US as a source to acquire weapon to counter Pakistan and as a place to send millions of Indians to work and send back money go India. As a civilian I don’t think India is and as was any friend to US ever. I think the US should look at India as a enemy. India always talk about their love, friendship and loyalty to Russia, yet as of now less than 40,000 Indian living in Russia. Compare to the US at the moment there are at least 4 million Indian living here. When I love something and friends with it and close to it as in distance I go there, but not Indians. India is a democracy that love communist. That should not be a country that is a friend with the US. The US should never sell those weapon system to India.

Seems like an ideal platform for the new QuickSink, small diameter guided bomb that enters the water beside a ship to detonate just beneath the keel.

Lots of P3s were based at Moffitt Field back in the day. The P3s where good enough Boeing must have lined the pockets of some Politisions pockets to get P-8s in the air.

Australia operates 2 P8 Poseidons out of Glarke US air base in the Phillippines, every day for many reasons, mainly China gets pissed off, just about any thing.
