Say what you will about Michael Bay, but he did Bebop and Rocksteady very well. Both in mutant and in human form and for that, at the very least he deserves credit. If for literally nothing else at all.
To be fair, he didn't direct those movies, only produced them. I won't argue with you over how Bebop & Rocksteady turned out, but they sure dropped the ball with Casey 😅
that aint april, they keep forcing race swaps like 30 years didnt exist..fuck that...same with mikeys voice changing from surfer dude to some black hip hop guy who would never say cowabunga
I picked up Raph a few days ago to give the line a spin. Definitely worth it, especially for kids. For the price, they come with a decent amount of accessories (if you use the ones on the sprue) and have decent articulation. I'd have taken a little bump in price to get better wrists and ankles, like what MOTU Origins does, but I still think these are fun. Gonna pick up the other three turtles and the Party Wagon once Prime Day passes.
Went out yesterday with my 13 year old who grew up with the 2012 and he loved them. We bought the turtles, the van and the target exclusive box set and we loved it all. For retail tmnt they really rank up there with the best of them. Now just gotta find the glow in the dark ones.
Great review!!! Thanx Hatter!!! I am only getting the turtles and skipping the rest…can’t wait for the vehicle reviews!!! I am very interested in those!!!
These look like good value for kids and parents. Still semi-confused how the timing of these movie toy releases were supposed to affect the release of the Neca toys. When you see a Target with the end cap display, it makes sense. But June 25 has come and gone, and less than half the Targets I saw have a display. Did the IP holder tell Playmates, Neca, and Target to do it this way? Was the deal only good for some Target locations? Maybe boring stuff to contemplate, but effectively, the release was sort of a Geekathon format (early morning online drop with some physical store early sales/leaks) but on a non-Geekathon day. So it wasn’t but it was
Some sort of parent company deal makes sense. I think it's Viacom that owns the company that owns the company that owns TMNT, so with the movie coming, I bet there was a concerted effort to get all this disparate stuff onto those endcaps together. Though from the looks of it online, all the NECA shelf spaces are empty in my area. 😔 Edit- apparently all the new NECA stuff came in on Target trucks vs 3rd party vendors, so there seems to be a plan in place.
The figures are 10 bucks and made for kids. So you can't expect collector quality product. They look damn good for what they are though, and those colors pop so much! They're gonna look good on the shelf regardless.
These turtles look great on the cards. I got just the turtles. They are fun for the age demographic they are going for and the price. I really enjoy the 2012 tv show. But nothing beats the 87 and 90 film turtles. But it’s ok to like other turtles.
The turtles look good, but not a fan of the looks of the other characters. Rocksteady is horrible, splinter and april dont look very good either. I do agree that this is just another iteration and there will be others. Just glad to see the turtles staying relevant in the toy aisle and staying popular with younger generations. I may pick up the bigger Leo just for display purposes. Glad your back from vacation, great review!
@Robd07 I'm passing on this version only because it is neverending, but if I the movie is great, I might collect this variat too lol. The only thing I don't like is Ralph's bandana, but other than that, I like their design.
Unfortunately, Bay’s Turtles kickoff the trend for the rendition of the turtles going forward. Personally the highs are always gonna me the ‘90 flick, ‘03 or ‘07 animated. New generation of new fans and I hope they will love what’s out and go back to the ‘golden era.’ imo
Great review. My 5yr old was especially interested in the van & the mask/costune weapon sets. If he & his sister like the movie we'll likely come back & see what they want to get. - Personally, im not a fan of the designs but im glad to see another iteration of TMNT with some cool toys geared towards kids.
Bought Donnie and Mikey a few weeks ago on vacation. Took them out of the box today (I wasn’t sure if they were gonna be worth tearing that gorgeous packaging, I mean, it’s Playmates after all) and I gotta say, these are very fun figures and I actually ordered Leo and Raph as well. For once Playmates did a good job and actually managed to make these screen accurate (or at least as screen accurate as you can for the price). I’m already itching to paint these up to bring out their gorgeous movie aesthetis. I particularly have a soft spot for Donnie here. The fact that the movie is actually great only adds to the fun of these.
Hey Hatter I've been curious. I'm barely in my early 30's but I would like to know what is it about Mutant Mayhem that's really resonating with adult collectors right now in contrast to the release of Rise of the TMNT? I don't recall people going out of their way to grab Rise Wave 1 or being excited for it. I was wondering if it's because the designs are closer to the 1987 cartoon/1988 toyline? Is it because the characters are familiar as opposed to the new roster for Rise? Or is the appeal something else entirely? It's just been on my mind lately more so when these Mutant Mayhem Turtles will likely behave just as juvenile as their Rise iteration. I'm just curious and fascinated by the reception of Mutant Mayhem prior to the movie release. Thanks again for the early morning Target drop.
I think the style choice has a LOT to do with it. Mutant Mayhem pulls a lot of styling from the 87 series and the Playmates toys of the time (which didn't even look like the cartoon).
Greta question man and you’re right, Rise didn’t get nearly this much attention. If I had to guess it u would say it’s the allure of an all star cast theatrical “event movie” that gets ppl excited. Vs let’s say a series. I mean that would be my best guess. Plus it’s giving off major spiderverse vibes and ppl LOVE those movies. Myself included
@@madhatterreviews6705 Thanks for the response Hatter. I can see the movie format providing more of an impact especially on public awareness via advertisements and merchandise. The Target endcaps are definitely because of the movie. Just today I saw a tweet for TMNT green Icees and some recent Pizza Hut promotions for Mutant Mayhem. The last time that happened was the 2014 movie and Mutagen Ranch from 2021.
@@NostalgiaUnboxed Thank you. I'm partly tempted to grab Leonardo as his design is very close to the 1987 look even more than the other turtles. Although when Rise came out I remember Raph was showing up early at Walgreens so I got him and eventually the rest of the turtles. I didn't go deep in the Rise line but seeing how it pulled off the shelves I kinda wish I did.
Yeah...I wonder how many people will like to collect that Velma...sorry April 😂😂😂...also wonder why they decided to not have a stand alone figure for her 🤔🤔🤣🤣🤣
One thing I noticed about the individual Raph is that is little pouch attached on his belt is well it's black, But the one in the van pack one his pouch is brown.
Wouldn't be surprised if the card art was designed before the figures were produced. With the first Michael Bay TMNT toy line, the cards even had the original title of "Ninja Turtles" on them. That was the title back when the Turtles were going to be aliens and Shredder wasn't in it, before the script leaked & fans revolted. 😂
I was able to snag the cruisin oozin pack as well, then the target exclusives Leo and Raph mutating re-releases. I had to ask the employee, she went back in to the back and got them for me, they didn’t have anything out yet
The single color mini figures that the turtles come with remind me of the OG toy line and how some figures would come with single color mini figures as well👍
It's funny, I see mostly adults buying these, but I do hope kids get into it. I no longer have interest in buying every iteration of TMNT, GIJOE, etc. so I am strictly sticking to certain ones, but these do look fun and I am excited to see the movie for sure.
@@MushroomKingdom722 Oh well I mean you reviewers. Almost every video is adults buying them and most of them don’t have kids. In store I see kids look at them and move on, but then I saw a few adults freak out over them and then buy a ton of them.
I ordered the 4 and the van from the target app last night for store pick up after work can't wait and as of the bay turtles the 2nd movie was good minus april and Casey they sucked I have a set of big turtles from the movie I just grabbed them at a garage sale cheap
Hatter, let the kids have fun and parents too, childhood moments pass you by too fast. I will have to see the movie to appreciate the rederings there is a chance even Rocksteady may grow on me😉. The outro clip👍✌️
Ive been hearing great things being said by people who got to see early screenings of the movie. Like you said this may not be your favorite iteration of the turtles but its still great for the turtles franchise overall. Im mixed on this iteration of the turtle designs but I'm still looking foward to the movie. As for the figure line, im hoping another company gets a shot at making a little bit more higher end figures like neca but in the meantime I'm planning on picking up Leo as he is my favorite turtle. I'd pick up Raph but like you I hate the pirate headband on him, it makes him look like some kind of punker. I'll tell you I am looking foward to loyal subjects IDW comic turtles as that is my favorite modern iteration of the turtles and it would have been great if they had adapted that story into a movie. I do hope loyal subjects has improved their figures for these IDW releases or else they will probably just stay looking good in package😂😅😢.
The movie is actually damn good and I would even say it’s the best TMNT movie since the original live action one. Not that that’s so hard to accomplish given the crap we’ve got, but it’s honestly a great movie on it’s own merit. Highly recommended if you’re openminded enough to a chance to an animated movie (I personally adore animated movies so it not being live action is in no way a negative for me).
Great honest video review. That's not my Rocksteady! This line has more paint applications than the Retro TMNT reissues. That sloppy green ooze on Bebop looks ugly.
Love them! Ty! The villains are pretty bad, imo. Rocksteady looks like a happy meal toy. I wish they had larger and more imposing villains. Ty for the vid
I'm a big TMNT fan. But I just can't do these personally. I need to rustle up some money for the Mirage four pack anyways. That's like..155 dollars I think. Mirage, 80's cartoon, (90's Movies including the TMNT movie in 2000, Archie, TMNT 2003-2009, TMNT 2012-2017. everything after the end of the 3rd animated series ending in 2014 has not been my cup of tea. Oh wait Last Ronin I loved. But I kinda count that as a Mirage spin-off. Just the last Ronin mini that Eastman and Laird did.
Dude! Thanks for the review was really helpful. Just picked up the mirage Neca turtle set . Would like to see if the new mirage turtles fit in the turtle Van .
I might get the 4 turtles but I hope once the dust settles and playmates moves on to the next turtles Incarnation we can get somthing from neca based on this movie because this movie was somthing special
The vehicles look great. I was thinking about using them for loyal Subjects tmnt. The turtles look ok. But all the other characters (villains, splinter, April) all look like crap. A lot of bad design choices was made for the movie.
These are my least favorite designs for beebop and Rocksteady. However, far from my least favorite Turtles. They are pretty cool. I like that they’re young teens.
"Actually don't sue me, because I don't have money" 😂😂. Not sure I want these figures, they look too kiddish for me, might not even see the new movie either.
I’m not a fan of the design for leatherhead or rocksteady. I get they are trying to make them look more like their real life animal counterparts but that’s not my rocksteady & leatherhead. Probably my least favorite iterations of them ever. Raph my favorite turtle looks ok. They did the Michael Bay do rag thing and it’s not bad. April design looks more Irma. Bebop looks ok too. But yea the paint jobs are definitely typically of kid toys and as far as a kids line they seem ok
The turtles look cute! Mikey is a little weird, but passable. Unfortunately my stores don’t have them yet. The side characters are another story 😆 Rocksteady and April are just too far from their designs that I just don’t even want them. Kids will probably like the turtles and some side characters, lack of Shredder is disappointing. I’ll see this on TV, not in the theater.
That $54.99 set is just so they can put April in it because no one is going to buy her separately. No one really likes that design for her. So glad you can take the glasses off of Donny. I dont like the glasses either.
