RESONATE, Music Network’s Artist Residency programme in partnership with the National Opera House.
Ali, a violinist, violist and songwriter, will develop a new project titled Just This Once.... inspired by stories submitted by the public which will be presented in concert at The National Opera House on Sunday, 3 December.
Members of the public are invited to submit stories to Ali about something, or someone, that means a lot to them that they think deserves a song. The stories can be happy, funny or sad, they can be about something ordinary or something extraordinary, they can be about anything or anyone at all as long as it is something significant to the storyteller. Members of the public can submit their stories to Ali via form.jotform.c... by Tuesday 8th August.
Speaking about the project Ali said, “The people whose stories are selected will be invited to attend the concert along with the general public. This is a personalised concert, a once in a lifetime experience.
I have been working as a songwriter writing personalised songs for people since the beginning of the pandemic. As with most musicians, all of my work as a performer came to an end as the world shut down and I had to look for new ways to support myself and keep my creativity moving. I was writing songs for peoples wedding anniversaries or birthday presents, mostly gifts from partners to each other. People would email me facts about their loved ones, their love story, and I would turn it into a song just for them. After a while I started to offer this service to people who I felt would really appreciate it in their own lives, people who were dealing with loss or who had done something special. I would offer these songs for free on my social media and it led me to this idea. A personalised concert. One where people are invited, along with an open audience, to hear songs written about them for them.

Now in its 3rd year, RESONATE provides support for professional musicians with a strong track record in music performance to develop new work and/or collaborations. Each residency provides a grant of €6,000 to enable the selected musicians to devote time to the creation of new work, in addition to a range of in-kind supports from both Music Network and each venue partner along with opportunities to showcase the work through live performances and digital updates.
This programme brings some of Ireland’s most established professional musicians to cultural spaces across Ireland between July and December 2023. This residency is one of six opportunities as part of RESONATE 2023, Music Network’s artist residency programme in partnership with glór (Ennis), Ionad Cultúrtha (Baile Mhúirne), The National Opera House (Wexford), Triskel Arts Centre (Cork City), The Dock (Carrick-On-Shannon) and Regional Cultural Centre (Letterkenny).
