Great review John. I would like to see a flight of peated whiskies vs each other from all 6 regions, and how they compare in relation to PPM levels but also the flavour profiles. I recently tried the Old Ballantruan and I was amazed how good it was for a Speyside peated single malt. Cheers John.
Old Ballantruan is very enjoyable indeed especially for the money and still flies under the radar. A peated rubdown sounds intriguing but challenging mainly because most distilleries only reveal pre-distillation PPM levels and not residual levels albeit Torabhaig which is very transparent on their labels. Cheers 🥃
@Dannykeenan1664 I love the NAS for its farmy peatiness. At the 10 year mark, Old Ballantruan is still slightly rough but the distillate works well with the ex-Bourbon casks. I have a sample of the 15YO, haven't tried it yet. I'm sure it's also very good.
The Kilkerran heavily peated batches have been hit or miss for me. I have had batch 4,5,6&7 and I would say 4 has been my favorite. Not so crazy about batch 6 but need to revisit it. Just recently bought a batch 8 but haven't opened it yet. Cheers to another great review, keep them coming!
I checked my bunker and I've got Batch 4 in there. Bought it a couple of years ago at $70. Now they're $89 so I'll enjoy Batch 4. I'm not paying that much for this. Good call for a trade for Kilkerran 12 year. I shall enjoy my garbagey note with Batch 4. ha ha.
Great review John! I’ve got a bottle of batch 5 and it is pretty much right between your descriptions of batch 4 and 6. Definitely robust on the peat and very grassy adding water brings out fruit notes, vanilla and a touch of coastal character. Drinkable at cask strength but much more enjoyable with a good amount of water added.
Thanks for the review! I normally like anything Campbeltown but the Heavily Peated that I have tried didn't agree with me. Oh well, more for the other folks... Cheers!
I just listened to The Whisky Vault's review of 60.9 is Batch Two Kilkerran Heavily Peated, which was not a very good batch IMO, when compared with the others. I've tasted them all. I found Batch Two it to be quite minerally and almost mescal-like. I didn't detect very many of the tasting notes that both of the Whisky Vault blokes mentioned. But their tasting notes in their YT review of Batch Two DO apply to later batches. I'm thinking they read up online for tasting notes and mixed up their batches. I'm not surprised. They censored my comments. The little guy in charge is kind of a wilting violet. His reviews these days are all about him, personally. A bit of a narcissist. It seems, at least in that review of the Batch Two, that both of them didn't really attempt to use their own noses and mouths to analyze the whisky.
I unsubscribed to them a year or so ago… too silly, too many informercials, and everything you just said. Great actors and comedians but not to be taken seriously. I enjoyed batch 6 and looking forward to opening batch 8. Cheers 🥃
