I think this sort of thing is fairly common. A high school friend of mine's deaf grandfather lost a game of online chess and threw the computer in the garbage can outside. When asked why he casually tossed the computer out he simply signed "junk."

I got a new TV like 6 months ago. a night about two weeks ago, I jumped out of bed in the middle of the night, tripped on my clothes basket, tripped again on a shoe, and just headbutted the TV. I don't even remember getting out of bed. It was like I was sleepwalking? or acting reflexively to jump to attention. But I did just go stumbling across the room and wreck my new TV. The worst.

I felt so seen after this bit. In middle school I bit my laptop after our internet went down and I lost a game of tetris and the screen had a line of dead pixels running through the middle of it
I don't know if it was an intentional joke or just a throwaway meme, but Tim replying "new phone, who dis?" is a nice little satire appetizer for the presentation bullet points.
As someone who had problems accepting failure as a child, I cannot tell you how grateful I was for the time someone accidentally stepped on my laptop in front of witnesses and my reign of tech terror was legitimized for so much longer than it needed to be (I'm chill now, but for those without decent self-control it's a long road to finding perspective).
This makes me think of when I was in middle school and I had a similar lie about dropping my iPod touch down the stairs when really I got so mad at it I picked up my mom's paper shredder and dropped it on top of it. I managed to simultaneously smashed the screen in and stubbed my toes at the same time which I probably deserved lol
