InshaAllah in today’s session we will share with you the lessons from Juz 1 that comprises of al-Fatihah and 141 ayat from Surah Baqarah. Surah Fatiha includes the dua of the believer for guidance - اهدنا…..that leads us into the first passage of Surah Baqaarah 1-20 where we are introduced to the three main types of humanity - Believer, Disbeliever, and the Hypocrite (the Munfiqoon). Following that, in passage 21-29 Allah SWT addresses mankind as a whole يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُواْ رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ taking us to the occasion when Allah SWT appointed man, Adam AS as His khalifa on Earth in passage 30-39. Verse 38 also outlines the terms and conditions of this appointment.
قُلْنَا اهْبِطُواْ مِنْهَا جَمِيعًا فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّي هُدًى فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَايَ فَلاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُون
From here a passage, devoted entirely to an extensive discussion about Bani Israel, reminding them of the long list of favors that Allah SWT had granted them in their long history (Verses 40-141)Starting with their escape from Firawn
وَإِذْ فَرَقْنَا بِكُمُ الْبَحْرَ فَأَنجَيْنَاكُمْ وَأَغْرَقْنَا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ50How he took care of them when they were lost in the desert,
وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ الْغَمَامَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَنَّ وَالسَّلْوَى كُلُواْ مِن طَيِّبَاتِ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَكِن كَانُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ57 and so much more. But Bani Israel continued to remain ungrateful and continued to violate the commands of Allah SWT to the extent where they also mocked and ridiculed the divine commands - like when they were commanded to slaughter a cow. Time and again they continued to reject the message despite having had the privilege of receiving multitudes of prophets and messengers starting with Musa As, the line ending with Isa AS Verse 101describes their rejection.
وَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ نَبَذَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَابَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَرَاء ظُهُورِهِمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Finally, the passage concludes with a discourse with Bani Israel about their claims to righteousness through being the descendants of Ibraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob reminding them that the only lasting link between generations of nations is that of faith, one is either a believer or a disbeliever because of their action and their record.
تِلْكَ أُمَّةٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَلَكُم مَّا كَسَبْتُمْ وَلاَ تُسْأَلُونَ عَمَّا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ
Those communities have passed, for it is what it earned, for you is what you ear. You will not be asked about what they used to do.
