A quick review of a JVC tape deck that features a "Spectro Peak Indicator" - a level meter broken up into individual frequency segments, much like a spectrum analyzer on a graphic equalizer. This deck presents an interesting light show, but unfortunately all the plastic parts were worn out and I couldn't do much with it.

That deck is not worn out, it's almost like new. The shine, the no sign or residue of fumes inside, no yellowing of the plastics and gears, no sign of oxidation in any place, not even a hint of caked dirt. The reason why the molded plastic gears cracked it's likely because it hasn't been used and has been stored in a temperature controlled environment. Had it been exposed from time to time to the heat of an attic that eased the stress tensions in the plastic compound it wouldn't have probably cracked. Practically it broke down because it was too well kept. I've never been so fortunate to pay 10 bucks for machines like this one.

I had the exact model from 1984-1987. The Frequency side of the display didn't help any as far as record levels, but it was very neat looking. I have kind of been looking for one just to remember how neat looking it was.

Thanks for commenting! It is a really nice display. I have not done anything else with this deck since making the video, still looking for another deck with the same mechanism so I could get parts to repair it, or maybe extracting the meters.

I own two JVC KD-A7 cassette decks with both analog meters and spectro-peak indicators. The peak analyzer are a very good tool to push the tape to the maximum level ( 315Hz) and also to 'see' if azimuth alignement is still on spot with test tones tapes. It's useful also to compare a tape recorded on another deck if the levels are higher for the same type of tape or to see if the Dolby decoder are working fine. When I record a tape, I use the the total peak indicator. This is a good way to record a tape without Noise reduction by pushing the tape to the maximum signal it can handles. Running test tones at 0 DB are impressive because you can see that they are... Accurate. :-)

Thanks for the information! I hope to someday buy a test cassette (for speed if nothing else), but am hesitant because most of the ones on ebay are homemade..

TBH there's NO other way than an oscilloscope to verify the azimuth alignment. Every other method I tried failed. They're so cheap today, if you have more than one cassette deck it's a tool worth having, dual channel of course.
