Hey all! Quick FYI: If you are switching from a routine with a lot of silicone to a silicone free formula you may experience a little "detox period." Essentially you are switching from that ~cosmetic coating~ of silicone that fakes smoothness and shine to something a bit more actually nourishing. It may feel dry or less shiny and smooth for a few showers. Give it up to 5. If the tide doesn't turn, you may need to incorporate different leave in products, a mask, or go up a level in moisturization in the conditioner and / or shampoo.

@@rosariequijano5226 Maybe there's an ingredient in the shampoo that causes it. It might need an adjustment period or a different product, unfortunately I couldn't tell you which it is.. I also experienced extreme itchiness last year during winter because of the weather, so it might also be caused by that! I'd look at scalp treatments if it continues, or consult with your doctor (maybe do that before scalp treatments to see if they have better recommendations).

Hi! As a fellow science nerd and an actual scientist, I would also greatly appreciate, if the companies wrote about their ingredients and, more importantly, listed their sources. However, at least when I was working for the supplement company (supplements are a whole another topic), these sources, while available to the public (that is also another discussion, don't get me started), were usually not listed on the website for the simple purpose of keeping it harder for the competition to steal/research/etc. what we were doing. In short, I don't think we would see this in the future unless it is a link to the study done by the specific company, but it would be sooo coool! Also, thank you for your videos! ♥ I really enjoy these sciency ones as I chopped my hair off completely a month ago and have to wait a while to be able to braid again :D

I LOVE when you do videos like this that bring out hair scientist Kayley because a) I always learn something fascinating, and b) it makes me a more educated consumer. In looking into the science, you truly set yourself apart from other creators in this space who review products largely based on vibes and personal preference and I think that's fantastic.
@bombshellblonde544
@bombshellblonde544 2 года назад
It's REALLY nice!!! This is the kind of thing that got my skincare sorted. Looking into the science means we are armed with knowledge so we can make our own informed decisions. Reviews based on personal preference really don't help viewers that much, because even if we have a similar texture to the reviewer, so many other variables can change how things turn out, like water hardness, amount hair has been processed, heat styling, etc. Knowing the science behind ingredients means a lower likelihood of wasting money or causing further damage to hair, and that's SO valuable

I realize that you are not postpartum, but I feel like postpartum hair changes are something I'd love Science Kayley to explain. I tried the Nourish line from JVN, and pre-baby, my hair would have loved it! But now my hair hates everything besides the Viori rice water line you talked about a few months ago (thank you, btw)!! I just don't understand what changed about me so much to be causing the hair changes I'm seeing, even when I'm like 21 months postpartum!
@hkandm4s23
@hkandm4s23 2 года назад
I hear you and have gone through this too. You should be almost through the worst of the post partum hair changes by 21 months, but I know there were some ingredients that really exacerbated the changes in hair falling out and scalp issues I had. I'm not sure what the ingredient is but in a few silicone free/ sulfate free hair lines there's something in there that made everything waaaayy worse for me and I've heard this from other moms too. I've heard that some function of beauty moisturizing or color maintaining varieties did this to someone else. Most recently I tried some shea moisture and that has been doing better than all the stuff I was using before. I had to try several different lines to get my hair looking okay again + some medicated scalp shampoo once or twice a month (Neutrogena t-gel) to help with clarifying and my scalp problems followed by a shea moisture mask. Still not back 100% but that's what I've tried so far. Good luck and I hope she can make a video explaining some of this 💜

Very honest review, thank you so much! There aren't many opinions on this brand on RU-vid, but I love JVN and really value his expertise. I was really excited to see JVN launch a product line! I didn't know about the quiz either so I just ran to Sephora and bought what I thought I needed 😅 the price point is so good to for such a premium product line, it's a dream come true. I'll probably need a bigger conditioner bottle eventually or a co-wash 👀 I'm a super curly girl with thick hair and a mix of fine curls, but since my hair has suffered from a very flaky, dry scalp and split ends, I went with the Undamage products. I also picked up the Nuture deep mask, the scalp oil, the air cream and recovery serum for styling. Oh and the shine drops.. I'm the type that loves all the oils and creams for my hair because she is thirsty! I may switch to the Nurture shampoos/ conditioner, but relieving my poor scalp of flakes and winter crustiness is top priority 😬 my curls are usually very soft and defined when detangled and after a fresh wash/deep conditioner, so I'm hoping to give extra love to my baby scalp to help resolve my problems!

Thanks for this. As a recent convert from a fuss free (aka boring) hairstyle to the 90'sesque heavily layered almost beauty queen type hair I've REALLY noticed a heavy crispy build up in my hair from styling products to the point of thinking about getting my hair cut into a bob again! I have coarse, dry, frizzy hair and need a LOT of moisture and oils to make me look less like the wicked witch of the east (I'm not even joking lol, here in Ireland we say I look like I've been dragged through a bush, in other words crazy mad hair!). I changed from silicones a few years ago and use an all natural shampoo which was great until I started putting a lot of heat protectant, volume boosters, blow dry spray, hairspray, frizz control etc in my hair and it just wasn't cleaning it properly and I noticed a lot of build up. I'll go out and get a clarifying shampoo tomorrow. Do you have any recommendations? BTW how are you aging backwards! I seen your video cataloguing the heatless curling methods from years ago and you haven't aged at all!

I haven’t tried these products, but I recommend doing a double wash if you have any oil buildup. I like to wet my hair and massage a little shampoo (maybe 1/3 normal amount) into my roots with the focus on just getting shampoo into contact with oily areas. Then I will rinse and shampoo again with more product (maybe 2/3 normal amount); on the second shampoo I get a really good lather and my hair ends up much cleaner because the shampoo I used in my pre wash step bonded with a lot of the oil/grime and rinsed it away, so my second shampoo is much more lather-y and effective even though I’m using the same amount of product overall

I tried these products. They were not pH balanced and made my hair really dry but also stringy/greasy. The scent was overwhelming, a strange mix of perfumes, and chemical… it also lasted forever so I had no escape from it. I used the purple line. Curl cream was ok but still not ph balanced, made my hair tangle and feel worse over time. Blow dry cream went in nice but made my hair dry and feel bad after blow drying. The pre wash drops are nice, they were the only thing that smelled good and didn’t make my hair feel worse. I was excited for this and ended up throwing out $150 of product.

If my hair is super oily I shampoo twice. I do a small amount & work it through the best I can, it won't foam very much, but then I'll wash again and let it foam up & really cleanse. I still end up using less shampoo than trying to get it all out at once. Also less scrubbing because it smoothes through the hair easier.

I've been trying to figure out how the heck squalane (which is already a saturated carbon chain) can be hydrogenated even more to become hemisqualane. I've even asked others who know more about organic chemistry to see if they could explain it and the consensus is that it's wrong. Squalene is hydrogenated into Squalane, and it can do that because Squalene has double bonds between some of the carbons, so those bonds become single bonds with the addition of hydrogen. There are no double bonds in Squalane (they're all single bonds), so it cannot be hydrogenated to become hemisqualane. To be honest, I can't find much information on the chemical composition of hemisqualane other than it has an INCI name of "C13-15 Alkane".

does that mean hemisqualane is fake science? (I'm not a scientist btw, just curious)

@@Jess-jl2tx I'm not sure. It could just be a different compound than the video states it is. I'm not a full scientist (yet), just in school and have taken organic chemistry (and other chem) courses. There isn't a lot of info on it that I found, other than the claims about how good it is. Though, I was mainly looking for the chemical compound, rather than anything else to do with it. I wonder if Michelle from Lab Muffin Beauty Science would ever do a video on it, she would probably be able to speak more to it!

Kayley! Thanks so much for making this video. I was looking into this brand. I’ve tried your other recommendations for shampoo/conditioner like Viori. I trust your opinion! I’d like to know your opinion on Quai haircare, they’ve been around for a while and sold at Sephora at a hefty price. Have you ever tried their Detox shampoo or mask?

Would love to try this but it doesn’t seem to be available in the U.K. yet. If you are U.K. based then Michael Van Clarke and Bondi Boost’s hair care are both great silicone free alternatives and sound very similar to these products!

I always see all these lines but with having naturally curly hair that’s colored and having the hair turning grey I’m getting the front looking dry, frizzy and I look like a scarecrow ! I’m soooo tired of spending $$$ on product that claims all the good head stuff! Also, what are your thoughts about Modere? I absolutely love your honesty!

Hi Kayley, I would love to get your take on shampoo bars! I'm trying to transition away from all the plastics in hair care packaging but it does seem overwhelming trying to find the right bar and there's a lot of noise out there about apple cider vinegar rinses. If I'm using a shampoo bar I don't feel like I should also have to do an ACV rinse, that to me says that the company isn't doing their job and creating their best product.

@awesomesauce754 2 года назад
I know I’m not kaylee, but I actually know a lot about this as a soap maker and cosmetology student. Typically you only use an acv rinse if you use a soap bar, not a shampoo bar. Shampoo and soap are completely different products and have totally different results. Soap isn’t great for hair, as it’s really alkaline. Alkaline products are damaging to the hair and cause the cuticle to open up. You don’t want that. The acv rinses bring the ph back to acidic, because your hair is naturally acidic, and it does best with acidic products. Shampoo bars are made with synthetic detergents, but don’t get scared by the word synthetic. Syndets or synthetic detergents are healthy for you generally and ones used In shampoo are totally safe. There is some really misleading info about so:e syndets, but it’s caused by a lack of knowledge about the syndets and scientific studies. Syndets are acidic and can gently cleanse your hair gently, but more importantly it doesn’t lift the cuticle and damage the hair. Conditioner bars and oils will make your hair plenty soft and lovely. Please don’t use soap on your hair, even with the acv rinse the hair can already be damaged just from the wash itself.

I'm really struggling with dry scalp, do you think the oil is a good bet to help with that?
@TracyD2
@TracyD2 2 года назад
There are conditioners that can be brought up to the scalp. People freak out over that but a lot of conditioners can. I would say maybe not a highly siliconed conditioner but a lot of conditioners are formulated well enough. Prepooing with an oil will help your scalp not get so dried out when washing. There are also serums with hylauronic acid and other moisturizing ingredients in them that are made for the scalp.

What did you do about the pumps that wouldn't pop up? I have 1, the hydrating condtioner I received yesterday, that won't pop up. I'm going to have to pour it out. Don't know what else to do. I've got fine hair, now I'm worried that it's going to weigh my hair down. The quiz suggested it along with the volumizing shampoo. Shampoo pump popped up fine.
