Almost of us are over 80.
All of you are so healthy and energetic.
This lady is 87 years old, too.
Do they all help the farm?
Yes, they do.
This is her son.
He works at the Forest Ownership Association.
You have a good harvest this year?
Yes, I think so.
Do you have wildlife damage?
What kinds of animals come to damage Yuzu?
Any kinds.
Before putting up a fence,
I mean, an electric fence,
Monkeys climbed up the trees and ate Yuzu.
I didn’t know that they eat Yuzu.

We grow Yuzu
giving almost no chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
You stopped giving strong chemicals.
There is an insecticide called neonicotinoid.
The insecticide
kills native Japanese bees.
We decided to stop using it
10 years ago.
People here keep bees as a hobby.
We knew that longhorn beetles would increase
if we stopped using neonicotinoid in our farms.
We wondered if our suggestion to avoid the insecticide was accepted by other farmers.
But they all agreed it
and immediately changed the way of farming.
So, the whole village?
Farmers tell me that they are not particular about the way of farming.
They take it for granted
but really do the special way of farming.
Refreshing.
Yuzu contains many seeds,
10% of the whole Yuzu.
17% is its juice.
30% is its yellow skin.
The rest is its pith.
This skin is not bitter at all.
You eat a lot.
Some are quite bitter, aren’t they?
Is it because you don’t use almost no chemical fertilizers and pesticides?
We compost Yuzu pomace
to make fertilisers
with adding Chaff,
a bran fertiliser (Kome no Sei).
We also add the bacteria called VS-bacteria
with the fertilisation accelerator in the compost.
We return the compost to the earth.
Farmers of the whole village give it to their farms.
All carry out circular agriculture.
We would like to throw things away as less as possible.
That you throw away good things you have
and give chemical fertilisers to Yuzu
is like putting the cart before the horse.
Since it is the mountain area here,
we can apply the method even though it smells.
I like the Yuzu scent in Yuzu season,
I can smell it as soon as I enter Hirai.
