K.D. Lang and Grover Washington, Jr. play "Black Coffee" as a tribute to Peggy Lee. Broadcast in December of 1996 as part of an ABC special titled "A Celebration of America's Music".
K.D. does an impeccable version on this song. A fitting tribute to the woman who has always really "owned" this song, Miss Peggy Lee. (K.D.'s favorite singer, and close friend) After Peggy's passing K.D. did a beautiful page long tribute to Peggy in Time magazine. It was the best of all the written tributes to Peggy.
If heaven feels like k.d. lang sounds, I better be going there! I could listen to her 24/7. Thanks for all your years of hard work miss k.d.lang. It hasn't gone unnoticed.
Wow!! Thanks for posting this, I am a big kd fan but I have never heard of Grover Washington jr. After seeing this I am going to make sure I hear more of his work. Two wonderful artists!
Sheer bliss - I must agree with Martidee, and it's thanks to folks like you, leoshephard, that folks like me can still stumble onto these little gems. Big thanks, xo
Nashville was run by white christian men that did't like gays or blacks but loved jesus. Go figure! Their loss as k.d. is one of the best country singers of our generation. She sings her face off on the country songs. I hope she does another pure country album. I think she's got one left in her.
Country radio stations didn't care if she were gay - they only stopped playing her stuff when she came out against eating meat of any kind - very anti-country and western of her:) Good singer
You done good leoshepard with this post. You elicited intelligent, friendly contentious comments from the few I read on this page. I think that is a testament to the various female artists mentioned and we are the winners. KD "can SANG" and Grover can blow. What a complement to each other. I have listened to Grover and Hank Crawford for yeears.
no comparison between peggy and kd. peggy was stripped down and straight up. peggy was sultry, kd soulful - no sharp edges here - and her phrasing is innovative and all her own. both are classics. rest in peace peggy - viva kd.
@PeaceFan1 I agree with you. Might I add, being from the blackside of the music tracks:), I have listened to Spade Colley to Hank Williams and watched live country and western music broadcast near the Wiltern Theatre, in L.A,. in the late 50's. A young black friend, who is into music, cut himself off from Luther Vandross, once he "came out". I don't get it. Nothing changes about their God given talent. Where country radio is concerned, to quote "You can't fix stupid!"(Ron White, comedian).
...or even the version by Freddie Cole (Nat King Cole's brother) performed in the 1950s. Good though Ms. Lang may be, she is a relative newcomer to this song.
taking nothing away from kd who has one of the BEST voices out there but personal preference i prefer julie's--but really its like splitting hairs...lol
Damn k.d.can SANG !! What happened to her ? Where'd she go ? She wasn't accepted by country radio once it was known that she was Gay..THEIR bigoted loss ... oh yeah, and they dissed the Dixie Chicks for their opinion on Bush ...Taylor Swift's success is a joke ...country didn't have it better than k.d. ...tisk, tisk...xo
