I'm 77 and so have lived through the best music of the last 100 years. I have always believed that for the singer-songwriter it is an insult to change their lyrics and Cohen's lyrics to this song might be the most altered ever. If you don't like a song about orgasms and how men feel after them. Write your own songs but stop wrecking other's.
Leonard Cohen was actually asked to sing the song at the Olympics. His response was something to the affect "you should ask kd lang, it's her song now", after she sang it at a tribute for him at the Canadian song writers hall of fame ceremony. He said the song had now reached perfection
Oh, I can guarantee my friend more than understands these lyrics. She's lived the song especially when you know the subtext every time she sings it. Her best version is the bootleg from the Strathmore in Bethesda. We were third row Stage Left where she spent most of the song that night. She's very much an empath and feels things very deeply. I'm grateful she's Aunt kd to our five year old and is my friend/family.
When you stop and realize this was a live performance. No auto tune. No back-up dancers. No glitz. Just k.d. Lang standing alone on a round elevated platform in the middle of a domed sports area. An arena full of testosterone, hormone driven, young athletes ... and it was dead silent. Everyone paying attention to that one person singing a song in a language that many foreign athletes likely did not understand. Truly amazing. Ms k.d. Lang, a Canadian icon and a gentle, humble gift to the world.
Leonard Cohen asked ppl to stop recording this song after kd's version saying it is the quintessential one. I was lucky enough to be there that night and what made it even more emotional was the death of a luge athlete earlier that day. kd lang is the truth and Tony Bennett called her the greatest singer that ever lived.
I am so glad you have reacted to kd lang.. not enough reactors have found her… she is the best female singer of my generation… saw her perform many times …here in Perth Western Australia …in her prime… so please please react to more live videos … her voice and breath control is perfect ..before auto tuning..pure pure kd all the way…
I saw her twice here in the States; the first time I went by myself and it was absolutely epic. The only concert that topped that experience was when the one and only time I saw Leonard Cohen (State Theatre in Detroit); I took my mom as a mother's day present because she LOVED LC. We ended up sitting in the orchestra pit - and we were less than 10 feet away from LC and Julie and Perla. I made my mom hang out behind the theatre after the concert like true groupies and we ended up meeting LC and getting his and everyone's autograph; he shook our hands and thanked us for coming and enjoying the show. He was so genuine and warm. We almost ended up following his bus to Chicago! LOL
She's most definitely NOT auto tuned, her sound tech, Red, earns his money as she hears in dog range. It's just unnatural. We were in Glennside, PA, and she stopped the show because people in the third row were talking and distracting her while singing. She's never used ear monitors as she wants to hear the band herself. kd is a phenomenal performer and consider myself lucky to count her as a friend/family and Auntie to our five year old.
@@lesleywilcox I said before auto-tuning… she is pitch perfect … I actually could hear this for myself as I saw her live a few times here in Australia… absolutely the best live singer I ever heard.. the power and breath control… holding long notes, song after song incredible energy.
kd lang is amazing! Her version of this is my favorite. ❤️ She has an amazing performance of this from the Canada JUNO awards. Brilliant! You must check out more of her! Thanks for another great reaction. ☮️❤️😎
In 1987 she had her first U.S. hit, “Crying,” a duet with country singer Roy Orbison; the song won the Grammy Award for best country vocal collaboration
Thank you for reviewing this stellar Canadian singer. This is my favourite rendition and it really moves me. K D Lang is a national treasure. Please check out her other work. You will not be disappointed.
In my opinion, others singers draw you into the music, the music alone. kd draws you into the story as well as being the best vocalist I have ever heard sing this song.
I remember watching the performance live on TV and couldn't stop thinking about it for days. It's such an emotional performance to watch and I can't not cry every time. Her voice is the voice of an angel. Love seeing your emotional reaction too!
I never heard of her until a month ago when I saw her sing this at the Canadian Olympics on You Tube and then even better at the Australian Lang awards. That was unbelievable. I just love her. Check out her duet singing "Crying" with Orbison. Leonard said after hearing her singing this that she now owned the song.
KD a proud Canadian 🇨🇦singing & being given a standing ovation by many, many Canadians🇨🇦, at the Olympics, singing the song written by Leonard Cohen also a Canadian 🇨🇦singer / songwriter 🥰 She started out in her western Province Alberta singing with her Rock - a - Billy band The Reclines! 👍 She was a huge fan of Roy Orbison & Miss Patsy Cline, and later in her career met Roy O & she sang his songs with him !! Check out her singing ‘Crying’ to Roy O at a tribute for Roy after he passed away.
There's a greater significance to the performance of this song at the Opening Ceremonies. Earlier in the day, a competitor in Luge, by the name of Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed when he lost control of his sled during a training run. The death sent ripples of shock through all of the competitors, and makes kd's performance all the more poignant.
Crying’ - In 1987 she had her first U.S. hit, “Crying,” a duet with country singer Roy Orbison; the song won the Grammy Award for best country vocal collaboration.
In the opening sequence, we see her alone in the center of this very large stadium. A single spotlight, and the crowd with their own lights. It looked like a night sky. There was something celestial about it that seemed perfect for the moment.
Absolutely 💯 % Perfect Preformance K. D. LANE THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN YOU N YOUR VOICE IS OUTSTANDING GOD BLESS YOU STAY STRONG AND SAFE KEEP PRAYING!!! 💛 LOVE YOUR MUSIC 🎶
She had found out not long before going on stage that a Luger had died after a high speed training crash. Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, from the Republic of Georgia was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after losing control of his sled during a training run at nearly 90 mph on the bobsled/luge track in Whistler, 70 miles north of Vancouver. His body flew out of the banked run and struck an unpadded steel roof support. Kumaritashvili’s death was announced as the Olympic torch made its way into downtown Vancouver, and the Opening Ceremony, normally a time to celebrate national diversity and culture, took on a somber tone at times as spectators, athletes and leaders of the International Olympic Committee and the Vancouver Organizing Committee mourned his passing
Pull up her "3 cigarettes in the ashtray" live on Johnny Carson show from about a gazillion years ago. That was the first time I heard her stunning voice and was immediately hooked.
You've stumbled onto another Canadian icon! Anything live will blow you away. She was a drag king way ahead of the curve. You're on a roll, with Joni Mitchell and Faouzia. We claim Faouzia as one of our own. ;-) She came here as an infant, from Casablanca.
She also did this beautiful song at a awards show in Canada and she was barefoot & it was amazing. Bon Jovi also did a live version of this on MTV Unplugged was also fantastic.
The Canadien Olympic commity ask Cohen to do that song and he said nop, ask KD to do it, it's her's now. I saw an entreview wher she explain that she studied the song, and never failed for the religious meaning of that song, she was convince that it was a love story, wich Cohen confirmed. After her interpretation on the JUNO in 2007(Canadien music award) he said that she truely carry the spirit of that song. He explained that ''making love is probably the closes to God you can get: Hallelujah''
My first time hearing KD was from a mix tape my friend made me…all songs she sings are as moving! She is a true 😇 your reaction so genuine! Keep real music “alive”. ❤
Kd was singing to God that day. As one empath to another, i was so glad to see someone who really felt this song the way I did. I watched her on tv that day amazed but not surprised to see her wow the whole world with that voice. I am a Canadian and recognize her as the national treasure she is. Her song list is extensive, covering everything from Roy Orbisons Crying to her fabulous Constant Craving. Hope you dive a little deeper into her music. She is just wonderful! Bucket list hope is to see her in concert one day before I die. Love KD Lang to pieces!
I've been listening to K.D. Lang for I don't know how many years!! There's nobody on the planet that can sing like her. She' s one in a BILLION!!!! And, by the way, I don't think she owns a pair of shoes. But, she doesn't need them!!!!!
Leonard Cohen was asked to sing this at the Olympics but he passed & suggested that kd Lang sing his song. kd Lang is one of Canada's greatest singer & songwriters. Check out her Hallejuah sung at the Canadian Junos~~she brought the house down! kd's Hallelujah at the Junos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P_NpxTWbovE.html
Every time she does this she give subtle variations that just mesmerizes me . As stunning as this is ,it’s not necessarily my favorite of hers. A different but stunning cover of So In Love kills me it’s so beautiful. Constant Craving or Miss Chatelaine are wonderful. She’s a Vocal Artist of the highest quality.
I have had the honor and pure pleasure of seeing k.d 5 times. The 1st time was at some country fair in the late 80's. Her young voice was powerful and wild. RU-vid Johnny Carson, he introduced k.d to the American audience. Her performances on his show were fantastic. Her live performances were always better than any recording, in my experience. She is the greatest singer of our time.❤
New subscriber here ❤ glad you have discovered k d lang she is amazing the late great Roy Orbison asked her to duet on his song Crying for a film, when he passed away the family gave her the song her version at the tribute for Roy or her MTV Unplugged versions are stunning if you would like to react to her early ‘Cowpunk’ country phase as someone else said she was quirky but so much fun, Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray (a Patsy Cline cover) Bopalena, Turn Me Round, Big Boned Gal just a few suggestions x
I recorded a reaction to Constant Craving, but its currently blocked. I put it up on patreon in the meantime. Definitely will explore more of her music.
@@SaeedReacts. I am certain that Orbison took her on in their duo of "Cryin" because he could no longer hit the high notes. Neither can she but together they distract you from the damage time did to Orbison's voice. She's good but she's not Roy Orbison.
An athlete had lost his life in bobsled trails that day and I think the performance of this song was just what the lord intended too settle the emotions of the day.
What a performance. KD has an unimaginably beautiful gift. Her perfect pitch, her soulful, heartfelt approach to this beautiful song...she is phenomenal. Achingly beautiful.
If you are looking for different, awesome, versions of awesome songs, listen to Disturbed do Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkle. You'll be blown away. Watch the video.
Can relate to the empath impact on listening to music. I am one, and music, especially something this exceptional, really moves me, sometimes beyond words. KD is so special!
You're right. You can have the best voice in the world and still not be a great singer like kd lang. There has to be an authenticity of emotion that you express with your voice. All the talent in the world isn't emotionally compelling if it does not come across in your performance. That reminds me of Christina Aguilera.
I just watched a recent interview by CBC News with k.d.lang and her induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and it was a delight. I learned so much about the woman I didn't know before. Not sure if sharing a link is cool but here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nGX2EeCg57I.html
A wonderful performance. Just last week, KD Lang was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. KD's conversation with Ian Hanomansing* just before the induction ceremony in Edmonton, might shed some light upon why she is so beloved in Canada (and no doubt in many other countries as well): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nGX2EeCg57I.htmlsi=wSU-BvynB0voAixL *Ian Hanomansing is a long-time CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) radio & television journalist.
It's time to stop wondering who does the best version of Leonard's classic song................KD actually does THREE versions that are better than anyone else including this one of course .
@@SaeedReacts. I hate nearly every version of this song. Too many warblers and screamers have overdone it and ruined it and only 2 other Canadians have done justice to the Canadian master's original. After Mr Cohen, (who I met, in London back in the late 60s) this is so good and captures the mood of the song. Then there's Rufus Wainwright's version. Other than those you can keep the rest. It helps that I've loved KD's work, since she started out. As for Rufus - born in New York but raised in Canada, in quite a musical family - the McGarrigles and the Wainwrights.
There is another version of kd doing this live in Winnipeg 2005(?) where Leonard is sitting in the front row. I like that version even better than this one.
kd is amazing...no matter what she sings. Another fantastic cover by her is her MTV Unplugged version of Crying. (Don't ignore her original work though.p!)
