Do gangster make a good solider? No. Gangsters in general possess all the bad qualities of being a soldier: cowardice, inability to submit under discipline, cruelty, bullying, cronyism and tendency to leave comrades in distress and save one’s own skin. They usually are ultra-masculine and very tender about personal credibility, but lack any human decency. Gangsters tend to be ruthless but craven. They usually are good on terrorizing helpless civilians, but when subjected to real soldiers, they melt away like snow on a warm spring day. Gangsters usually care only on themselves and their gangmates, in that order. They do not care a fsck of things like “fatherland”, “home”, “defence”, “esprit de corps”, “brothers-in-arms” and least of all, “honour”. They gladly embezzle fuel, gear, vehicles, supplies, weapons and ammunition and sell them on black market - even to the enemy - for personal profit and gain. More often than not, the gangsters form their own cliques or units, and practice trade of contrabands, smuggling, drug dealing, pimping and/or commit robberies and burglaries. They are not motivated to fight, but put personal survival as their primary objective and benefiting from the war as their second. They gladly terrorize and murder defenceless civilians. An excellent treatise of this has been the Arkan’s Tigers in the Yugoslavian Wars of Disintegration. Roland might have some idea on how it went. But the histories of 13th SS Division “Handschar” and 36th Waffen-Grenadier division “Dirlewanger” are sad reading on what happens when criminals are recruited.
