They are no "lap dog". I felt very safe with my male KBT. He would make no bones about standing his ground while I walked him if someone seemed questionable. He was also a great guard dog and protector of my home back then in Chicago. I LOVED that although he wasn't too fond of dogs his size or smaller, he doggie friends were the local Doberman, Cane Corso, Rottweiller, Pointer and Malamute...He was a BIG DOG in a medium package. He was also VERY POPULAR with the kids in the neighborhood by securing the perimeter when they played nearby with a warning bark or growl if anyone other than their parents came near.

I love kerry blue terriers, but the cysts are why I won't own them anymore after two previous kerry blues.

I have one, and his tail is too long and they love people, but hate dogs.

They don't hate dogs, that's an owner issue (failing to socialize the dog) not a breed issue.

@@2011blueman That hasn't been my experience. Mine is 11. He was the runt of the litter and he would constantly shake and pee. He still shakes when he's nervous but when he's around my family(he knows) then he's totally calm. They have strong prey drive. He used to terrorize my mom's cats. He's not as bad anymore. As far as other dogs go, he would just shake and get humped, then one day he had enough and he's been holding his own ever since. He goes on the offensive now. He's only bit one dog and it wasn't that bad. More of a warning to stop humping me chomp. It's not a sure fire fight every time. He fights over the same stuff a lot of dogs do. Food, windows, etc. Overall he's been a great dog. They are so loyal. I can't believe the stuff I can get him to do. It involves a tremendous amount of trust over a decade of working together.

I love Kerry Blue Terriers & Standard Poodles & am trying to decide between the two breeds. I walk at night in the city & there’s crime, so I want a dog that can be somewhat protective. (does not have to be fierce like a Rottweiler, but more protective than a Golden Retriever). I’m also thinking of maintenance. Is the fur of a Kerry Blue the same or different than a Standard Poodle’s hair ? I know that a poodle can be corded (dreadlock). Does the Kerry Blue have the same cotton texture ?
