Nothing better than the satisfaction of repairing an engine that has problems! The post war stuff is nice, but once you've been jaded by the newer engines with can motor and flywheels, there's no comparison. Great job!

Fixing the old stuff is much more relaxing. Almost meditative. Electronics on the other hand can be almost like dealing with magic!

Fantastic repair, Dave. I'm really glad to see that there are those of us who have the capability to restore these back to their original operating conditions. Bringing trains back to life is what got me back into the hobby. I even refer to myself as Doc Adams. Bringing back from the dead and saving trains one day at a time. Happy rails.

This one was really helpful in getting my 1997 Lionel Centennial GP9 running, which I bought cheap on e-bay as a non-runner. When I got it, I took the shell off and looked at all the electronics and said holy crap, or something like that, and put it on the shelf. It wouldn't run at all and I couldn't even figure out which board was the reverse unit. So, after your video, I took another stab at it and started going through it, doing the basic service as you suggested, and it took me about five minutes to figure out that one of the spade connectors to the motor was broken. I fixed that, replaced one of the light bulbs and added a nine-volt battery for the Railsounds and it ran, so I was pretty happy. The flashing light on top of the cab is a cool feature. It's a nice engine. I still don't have sounds, but that's a battle for another day!

That’s awesome! So glad the video helped you out. That makes me so happy. As far as I’m concerned it it runs, it’s a win, sounds are another story. I feel like they are so temperamental. If I ever get sounds working I take that as icing on the cake.

That truck design seems to have had a lot good thought put into it. The brass center gear appears to be a sacrificial part to protect the rest. It must have sounded screeching awful as it was being chewed up. Always great to see good things returned to service!😊
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby 6 месяцев назад
I can’t imagine what it sounded like while it was wearing that gear down. Maybe it was quiet and that’s why they kept running it. 🤷‍♂️ either way I’m glad I found it so quickly. It just wouldn’t be the same with one motor.

A great fix Dave and a great teaching video as well! Jumping to conclusions? It's only natural with these things. I've had locked-up post-wars I've gone nuts trying to figure out what's gone wrong when it's turned out to be small loose screws the Mage-Traction picked up from "somewhere" which jammed up the drivers. So when a post-war acts up now guess what's the first thing I check? I'm guessing that gutsy diesel horn is on the B&O engine? If it's on the Geep then honestly I think it sounds pretty good! A fun show as always, thanks for posting!
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Wayne. I’ve never had an issue with Magnetraction picking something up, but if I do I’m sure it will be the last thing I check! The horn is the B&O, that has a great horn. The one in the Reading sounds like a short circuited whoopie cushion.

@rennethjarrett4580

Great job on this. I found out the hard way that a very similar looking Lionel center gear-set like you had to replace will not work in the K-line unless you find a way to change the outer gear. It is a few teeth large then the K-line. So I have a set of those for Lionel I am not using.... Before you go to far with the sound system check out the speaker. I had bought a Lionel steam tender and it sounded bad on the sound of steam and the whistle but the bell sounded fine, and the crew talk was OK. The speaker somehow partly detached at the voice coil, and where it came loose the coil then would rub on the center piece, only affecting certain sounds. Got a new speaker and it is just fine now.
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby 6 месяцев назад
Thanks. That’s a great tip about the speaker. I know with some sound of steam boards the speaker wire would work loose from the board and cause issue, I hadn’t thought about it for this one though, so thank you. I’ll start there.

You know it's funny, I owned that exact engine briefly, but it was in HO scale. It was an Athearn Genesis model with DCC. That had it's own problem, someone dropped it and it bent the frame and ripped off some of the very delicate detail parts. I got it to run good, but I don't use DCC so I didn't keep it and I don't model Reading. You did a nice job on yours.

Dave I have a question….long time follower…..I have a large loop and just found out I have a 6 piece section of track that is now dead…other 90% runs fine….how to trouble shoot? Was working fine two weeks ago…..there’s no hurry as I’ll keep looking but maybe you or the hundreds of great followers you have might have insight
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby 6 месяцев назад
Hey thanks for being a part of the channel. Do you have feeder wires or just one lockon? Tubular track is fairly easy to diagnose, start by looking for loose joints. Tighten any joints. Maybe add a feeder wire or two to the center rail. Fast track can be a little harder to deal with but the idea is the same, start where the power drops and look for a loose wire. Feel free to email me with questions. Address in video description
