K-pop is just like pop music here there just sing in another language that’s all.

I've been noticing that, too, as the years have passed 😞 I loved printing out the lyrics to some of my favorite songs and trying to translate them during any downtime I had back in high school. It was one of the best pastime activities I picked up back then. Learning how to pronounce, write, and read the language through the lyrics was very fun and engaging. And now, most K-pop lyrics are filled with english instead of the language of the genre it's under 😥

Some of KPOP's origins started in the USA when Lou Pearlman written the playbook originally for Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. See the only thing that's changed is different players using the same playbook.

100 % they did it the best. I've been listening to them since the hero mv on the helicopter pad 😂. Their sound didn't change much, but then their English albums came along, i was like 👀👀. I saw my non k-pop fan friend listening to their English tracks too.

@@BITI613 That's the myth. But it's not true. 2NE1 was having problems as far back as 2013/2014. In fact, after 2014 they basically stopped having any significant group activities (two years before BP even debuted). Bom was constantly getting hammered in the media and on social media for the prescription drug "scandal". Before that, the will i am collaboration project obviously turned out to be a total waste of time and money (and that disaster happened before any of the BP members had even joined YG as trainees). When 2NE1 fell apart, YHS was really focused on his next big boy groups, spending tons of money on a years worth of reality TV shows to promote them (initially as "Team A" and "Team B"). (We saw more of the 2NE1 members in those boy group trainee reality shows than anywhere else during that period of time.) Minzy actually bailed out, announcing her intention not to renew, 6 months before BP even debuted and YG already clearly had decided to drop Bom. (I don't think she deserved that, but I also don't think that B.I. should have been dropped.) Meanwhile, YHS seemed to be going through a mid-life crisis and wanted to star as himself in reality shows (such as Mix9, where he starred as the savior and producer for struggling trainees of OTHER companies). It's not clear whether 2NE1 would have had any future regardless of whether BP was waiting in the wings. YG's highest priorities were on the boy groups and himself. YG probably never even expected Blackpink to be so successful, since YG always treated female artists as much lower priorities. Blackpink's debut was still a gamble, at a time when for all practical purposes 2NE1 already no longer existed as a viable group. If everything had been going really well with 2NE1, YG easily could have kept both groups going. I mean YG has had up to 5 or 6 boy groups (e.g., Big Bang, Zechs Kies, Winner, Ikon, Epik High, Jinu-Sean and sub-units) simultaneously under contract at the same time. Why not just 2 girl groups? It's not like YG was spending any time on Lee Hi (6 total years in the dungeon) or Gummy. It's unfortunate that a lot of people think that 2NE1 was dropped because of Blackpink, when there's no good evidence of that ever being the case.

Underrated comment, totally agree. Girl groups and especially boy groups have always relied on an active (mostly very young) fanbase and it's uncommon for them to be mainstream pop artists who mainly market themselves to the general public. One Direction is considered to be the first boy band who became big globally because of social media - and then BTS did that, too, while taking "global" to another level since I'm pretty sure their fanbase is ethnically and nationality-wise more diverse than those of any Western boyband. (On the flip side that's something their company seems to be overwhelmed with if you think about the high shipping costs for official merch and the small amount of countries they promote & tour in)

True this. You don't ever get viral by intending to be viral, same with K-pop's international success.

This is also why I got into kpop in 2009, plus the fact that kpop wasn't always about sex and not too much of their body was showing when you think about the songs that came out then which isn't all that bad when i look back and i'm actually able to enjoy the old pop songs now.( I was literally 13 years old and felt like I didn't connect to music like that during the time and music was always my everything)

I feel like you can categorize most western pop music into groups of like less than 10 based on what the songs’ lyrics are about, love, breakup, partying/getting drunk, women, sex. I’m sure there are more but I feel like I was sick of listening to the same lyrics over and over even tho the music changed.

YUPYUPYUUUP !!! The "real kpop" days were with gen 2 (and some 3gen groups) groups like bigbang suju tvxq shinee ect. I feel like their trying too hard to appeal to the western market, as an asian who was born in asia but living in the west , the music styles and such aren't really that different anymore. Kpop is still unique in some ways don't get me wrong but it feels like the companies are ONLY infested in money and nothing else and alot of kpop project feel very empty if you know what i mean. Though NewJeans is giving that gen2 nolstalgic kpop vibe, they sound more like 2gen than gen4 which makes them stand out ALOT

Just because they look good doesn't mean they suck. I have gone back to some of the earlier generations and most of them actually sucked. Good for Korea back then, but not read for global appeal. Even the one's deemed ugly by Korean standards at the time weren't much better. The biggest issue more recently os that they manipulate their vocals so much in studio that they sound too similar...at least the cutesy concept groups (looking at you Twice...) or go crazy with choreo and have to lip sync their performances (Aespa at Coachella...) plus the bigger choreo doesn't connect with the audience due to them worrying more about not messing up vs enjoying the performance. Look at how Blackpink and Mamamoo perform and still connect with the audience. They found the proper balance. Mamamoo more vocally and BP more performance driven with a killer live band to boot.

I agree! But even starship is realising how important domestic promotions are. Only recently in the past two years has their popularity in korea increased greatly because they've been focusing heavily on the home front. Now it seems like they have a pretty good balance between international and domestic promotions.

Seventeen is one of the only groups that has released music for a western market that I felt matched their actual identity and sound as a group.

And many artists who speak English as a first or second language use the US market to make it big internationally - often by moving there and making it their home base. Pop music generally has always been a business. Kpop itself is not really about Korean culture per se. It's always been an adaptation of pop music business practices that originated in the 1950s and 1960s in the west, when groups of singers were really popular. To some extent, the adaptation first was made in Japan and then in Korea. Korea developed the system to a point where they've kind of leap-frogged over Japan in terms of influence. But the basic template for creating, producing and promoting 3-member, 4-member, 5-member and even bigger groups was never something that organically came out of Korean culture. It's a business now and always has been. They want to succeed globally (like everyone) because that means more money. If anyone doing music in Korea wants to be pure and focused only on Korea, they can do it, but they're going to earn a lot less money. The "purist" musicians are performing in small bars, cafes and dives...and earning peanuts.

And the Asian Market crash kinda their wake up call too that they really have to Expand first in Japan or China. But Over time globally. And I live here in United States the 15 and up people know kpop now. So and they are like pretty much hyped to spread this music to everyone. And Im helping it to spread as well

The current generation here in the U.S. hates the mainstream pop and hip hop wave going on here. A lot of them are more interested in retro pop, rock, R&B, indie/alternative and Old Skool. When we think of pop stars here in the U.S. we see them as empty and soulless. The fact that BTS wants to be a part of that doesn't make them any greater. They are part of the empty, soulless pop culture that's polluting the airwaves. You think it's something to be proud of?! Think again. BTS popularity in the media has gone way down here in the U.S. It's not going to get any better after their military commitments. The way I'm hearing about what some members have been up to seem to suggest they're not going to be enthusiastic to restart their work as a group after their service. The fans need to prepare for that. They're not going to be around forever. You best get used to that.

Going to keep it real here...most of us who grew up here at least in the US do not listen to their music in earnest. The ones that do are very young kids that want to fit in their social groups and not necessarily because they think their music is great. For older people that I know in real life they listen mostly and not watch videos...and not congregate to affirm/validate their music tastes online. I'm BTS's age and they look like normal hardworking guys to me like every other kpop group but I remember when I was in my teens secretly fanning myself when I saw older guys as super handsome so I understand this dynamic. The music is first and foremost in the USA and even if the guys are cute and funny I don't think it really hits the mark for what we enjoy overall. I'm personally sick and tired of the same make up styles and basic musical patterns used the last decade and I'm starting to believe the music here is aimed at what people believe we like and not what we actually like which is kind of disturbing...

I would love to see EXO getting more international Hype, but at this point, I think the members do not care about "western validation" they know we exist, If possible they will go to music festivals around the world just for fans(like EXO is already the main event there, it's not like they would get bigger exposure there)or have tour in Asia and some European /American country that's it. Lately, they are being nonchalant about album buying too ( asked not to buy multiple albums of different versions) It feels like they are just happy to make music that they love(they mostly don't even hop on trendy music, they make what they like) and share it with fans. However, EXO's core sound could have attracted many mature grown-up people tbh.

I've heard that Beyonce is really good at singing and dancing at the same time. Most Kpop groups could be like that, too, if their companies focussed more on vocals and keeping the idols healthy (I know Western artists are more likely to have issues with illegal drugs but it just seems like such a waste to me that young artists in one of the most health-oriented countries in the world are living in a system in which sleep deprivation, extreme dieting and regular alcohol consumption is so normalized..)

Bebe rexha participated in Shinees Lucifer and Taemins Press your number was a song written by Bruno Mars. Maybe a lot of Kpop artists are trying to appeal to the western market, but not everyone is changing their discography style for it. The artists I mentioned above, never changed their discography style to adapt to western audience. The consistency in their sound is what makes people listen to them

I am wondering if the fans, who are trying to gate-keep the K-Pop culture from the western societies, are the same people that has brow-beat/scolded/harassed black/Latino/South Asians with the "cultures are meant to be shared" statement. If so, the unawareness of their hypocrisy is astounding.

@@makeitright777 I don't think, It's about the language (3 "English" songs), I think it's about BTS's core sound, which sounds more and more westernized day by day. while in 2014-16 they had their own flavor and sound, which made casual fans love and support them. K-pop always had a western vibe but they kinda add a twist and make it different. To cater to a big western audience feels like BTS stop adding the twist, it sounds Korean song but a western sound, I don't think it's hate, it's more like criticism, but it worked in BTS's favor.

It wasnt just the three english songs. They completely changed their identity in 2019 to break into America. Nothing about their experimental hip hop sound like War of Hormone, Dope , Mic drop and Boy in Luv is related to dance pop songs like Boy with Luv, Butter , or Dynamite. I don't hate them for it. But to deny that they did a complete 180 degree change on their styling, concept, and sound in order to cater to the American audiences is ridiculous.

I feel like people should go back to 1st and 2nd generation and listen to the music from that period. A lot of that music was "Americanized" in my opinion. Only a handful of acts didn't. So when people make those accusations of "Americanization of K-Pop music," I think "Oh, so they going back to what they used to sound like?"

Agreeing with you. Nothing wrong with catering to Western markets. I do think they can all try their luck and see if any group will stick. Most likely, a lot will fail because it takes time to build that appreciation, including BTS and Blackpink. They were not instantly accepted but were gradually accepted. I do think more seasoned groups like Twice should try going to the Western market because traditionally, older girl groups were forced to disband or stop activities. Just look at Kara, Sistar, AOA, Apink or Girls' Generation, etc. Now they have an outlet to go to the Western market, just like what they used to do by going to the Japanese market. Older groups now can move to the Western market and still develop wonderful music as some of them are getting better and better musically and stylishly and become full-blown artists, so why not?

Black pink aren't even that successful to be honest. BP Still can't sold out satdium tour . BP still don't have much big achievement in west like BTS and let's not forget how many big awards BTS has won while black pink still don't have any billboard, American awards, except for best metavers in MTV VMA ( this award catagory is so low ). Black pink don't even sell half of BTS albums. Yes maybe in views both are same but real success is totally different.we can say only BTS is most influential that's why they add 4-5 billion dollar every year in SK GDP. So we can say it's hard to surpassed BTS success but not impossible anyway.

@@LovelyKissess ?? My point still stands there are a lot of groups that would have disbanded or not be as successful as they are right now without there international fanbase such as ATEEZ, SKZ, Dreamcatcher, Everglow, etc.

@@Slayoon OR they wouldn't have. And it wouldn't be any different than now. Groups still disbanded early. Always have always will. And most of these groups might have targeted Japan or other Asian countries and did just fine. Dreamcatcher would have don't great in Japan

@@LovelyKissess I am not claiming that all groups will not survive without an international fanbase or that having an international fanbase will suddenly prevent disbandment in K-pop. I am saying a lot of groups would not be as successful or would have disbanded because they mostly rely on their international fans. A lot of groups that have bigger international fans are not promised to be as successful as they are internationally in other Asian countries just like some groups will. It’s that simple. I am not dismissing the fact that it could be the opposite or that there are other possibilities. I am not claiming this is the case for ALL groups that are popular internationally and not domestically. I am saying there will be a lot of groups who will not be as successful as they’re without their INT fanbase. I used the groups I listed as examples of the types of groups I am referring to which is groups with bigger fandoms INT. Those groups could have done the same thing or found success in other countries The west is not a savior. They help, all countries support and recognition does, so anyone could do just fine because of that. But I agree, some groups would have disbanded Bts being one that say they were almost there before they got popular. It's really just a hit or miss. You can have your opinion on it, that's fine. For BP, singing in English is as natural for them as singing in Korean. I don't see why they should limit themselves just because some people think that it's more exotic for all of their songs to be in Korean. Rose actually is a native speaker of English. Jennie is practically at native speaker level. Lisa is not a native speaker of either English or Korean, but is very good at both languages. Jisoo is the only one for whom Korean will always be more natural than English. I mean, it's perfectly fine for you to have the preference that you do. But it's clear that BP has gained many, many fans with their English-language songs and, internationally, it's probably a big advantage for them. For groups that have no members who are good at English, they should of course stick with Korean lyrics because it sounds awkward when they try to sing in English.

There's nothing wrong with trying to enter in the west, but what's happening with 4th gen it's insanity They're debuting to many groups to see who will be the "next big thing" while these groups are either being one hit wonders or not making it big in their home country They're constantly being obsessed with usa and with hot100 and constantly failing to enter the chart.. and they totally forgot Europe lol and that's their biggest mistake

The funny thing is that, other than singing in Korean, Kpop is not "NOT western". It's based on the singing group pop act formula that was super popular in the 1950s and 1960s in the U.S. and western countries. Even through the 1990s, you could see lots of examples of the same basic formula still being used, especially for "boy bands" in America. Kpop is just that formula being adapted to the Korean market by Korean companies. Choreography, singing, teen-idol publicity, etc. by groups put together and trained by companies looking to make a profit.

@@_arlinda The 4th Gen groups' mistake is that they're trying to push the groups into those markets before they even have many fans there. Blackpink didn't do much of anything at all in America or Europe for their first 3 years and waited until fans and promoters in those countries were demanding and begging for them to come. By contrast, the 4th gen groups' companies are sending their groups to those markets and begging fans to come.

For me, it is the hypocrisy behind the "gate-keeping" that the _non-Korean fans_ are doing that has me cracking up. I feel like there are fans, who are seeing K-Pop music labels as being more "high good morals" than the music industries outside of Korea. So, it is blocking them from seeing these labels for what they are: businesses and corporations. They're just doing what businesses and corporations do.

It's definitely a soft power as well. China hates that South Korea has more influence globally because of its media.

Only if you look at the biggest groups in the western world. Have you even tried listening to songs coming from mid and even nugu companies? Kpop is still pretty much alive and thriving, arguably now more than ever and I'm saying this as a nugu promoter. Try listening to groups such as CSR, woo!ah!, Limelight, StayC, ILY:1, FIFTY-FIFTY and others and you will know what I mean.

Twitter said they permanently suspended my account on 9/19/2023 because I tried making multiple accounts to skirt the first suspension. I was like “First?” I was never suspended before. It was clearly someone else. I appealed multiple times but they denied me. I will eventually create a new one under a different IP and start all over again.
