This is part one of our restoration of a Hallicrafters S-38 for Arthur K1SVC. Arthur's son whose name is also Arthur asked us to restore this S-38 and a S-40 for his father.
I love the S-38C. It is what got me into radios and ham radio when I was 15. Make sure you watch the S-38 videos I have put up and just ask if you have any questions.
Hello, Enjoyed your video's on this S-38 restoration. I have an S-38 I'm restoring and the dual padder (C-10 & C11) for the oscillator transformer is missing. My S-38 oscillator section is wired differently to compensate for this missing padder and the radio does work. However, the alignment procedure requires an adjustment for C-10 &C11. I managed to find a dual padder from a junker S-41. I'm pretty sure that most of the components are interchangeable between these different S series receivers so I decided to use the one from the S-41 and try to install it in the S-38 and try it. However, the way the padder was wired in the S-41 is different from the way the padder is wired in your S-38 video. I couldn't see clearly in your video's where all the wires from the padder go. So I was wondering if you could please send me a diagram/sketch as to how the padder in your S-38 hooked up. I'd appreciate it very much. Thank you. Bill KI7ZAD.
Looking at the hole through the top of the cabinet and into the board surrounding the speaker, I am guessing that K1SVC installed some type of rod antenna there, maybe. -Arthur
