Helps keep the weight from transferring too far from the front, where most of the weight is anyway. Under initial acceleration, the weight shifts towards the rear of the car, which doesn't help a car like that's front engined front-wheel drive (FF) as it causes the wheel to spin excessively in high horsepower applications. So drag racers with FF cars use the wheelie bars to kind of alleviate that issue. The more weight on the wheels the receive power, in this case the front wheels, the more traction you can have off the line. More traction means better acceleration and of course, less wheelspin.
