It's time once again for the king of K Horns to make an appearance. 1 of the only 9 K5HLBs makes its way west through Streator. Though this time there's more of a story to how I caught this one.
I went up to Coal City the day before, railfanning for a little while, left, and then on this day I went back up there again not thinking anything of it. I went to RU-vid and found a new video from Trains of Minnesota of a K5HLB going east through Coal City on 2/10/18, which was when I was there. Turns out it came through 1 1/2 hours after I left. Grr! I was pretty mad at this point, but then I figured it would come back west soon.
Well not long afterwards, John messaged me and told me it went through Verona WB about a half hour before. GRRRR, I just missed it again!! I thought for sure it was long gone. However, there was a line of EBs going around another EB at Kernan, which held up this train, and gave me just enough time to hurry my way west, and get ahead of him at Streator. The backroads were slick and icy so it was complete luck that I managed to get ahead of him.
And so here we are in Streator, watching 8052 come west through town sounding off its magnificent horn. If the trends keep up, that means this will be my only catch of one this year, but hopefully that's not true.
Also, when I got home later that night, I looked through the Railstream archive for Coal City, and it turns out I missed him going west through there by only 15 minutes!! I don't know how I did that, but if only I had caught him going through there.
