K6UDA Radio - The most beautiful girl in ham radio, Heil Pro 7 vs RadioSport RS60CF 

As a private pilot, I know for a fact that the Heil is made by the same company and is the same headset I use to fly. Avcom. David Clark makes a nice sheepskin headband that will replace the headband on the Heil. You can also buy the mic's for these headsets from David Clark direct. And for less money (aviation items are usually much more money) you can build these headsets from bits and pieces from places like David Clark, Sky Geek, Airplane Spruce etc

This comparison "panel" was a great idea and very illuminating, thanks! I'd love to see more videos like this. In case you haven't done it before, I'd love to see transceiver comparisons as well.

I love my Heil Pro 7. Use it all the time. I assisted Bob in redesigning his Purple Amateur Handbook a few years ago from the little red one he originally did. What a great family they are and work ethic is awesome! Stephen N8WB . be blessed my friend!

Great video Bob. The first time through I was too distracted by the ring girl to get much technical detail but I did better the second time. I like the way you had the experienced judges do the evaluation and state their pros and cons. Great idea to insert the audio clips I sent you so the viewers can actually hear what the mic elements sound like in "on air" conditions. I even got two words of dialog in your production. Guess that's my one second of fame.

Interesting comparison guys. I have used the Heil Elite Headset for years, they are comfortable, block out noise and I like the phase switch. I prefer headsets for serious operation.

Excellent video, good job on the comparison tests. I have a question regarding the phasing on the Heil: Does the phasing create a separation making it sound as if it's sort of "stereo"? Hi Bob, Best video so far in your ham radio series. The other ham related videos were informative, like the portable antenna video, and also funny (which I liked). Danielle adds a nice entertainment value to a very well done "Shoot Out" of two popular headsets. I have a couple of Heil headsets although not the Pro 7 reviewed. I also have the Radio Sport which I use with a KX3 in my RV. I've found both have pros and cons as noted by the reviewers. While I use a headset exclusively in the RV (so xyl doesn't have to listen to that "beeping noise" {CW} ), I prefer to use a boom and mic combo at home with wireless stereo headphones. I have yet to decide which I like better; Heil Proset Plus or Radio Sport (leaning towards RS except for the price and lack of cables included) , but your video has me looking at the Pro 7 as another possible option. What would be perfect, in my opinion, is one or both models having the option to be used via Wi-Fi so that you are not "tied" to the desk. A Wi-Fi audio connection for RX / TX and a logic PTT provided over Wi-Fi would add utility and ease of use for either headset Perhaps with a Wi-Fi connection instead of the cord Tyghe would like the Radio Sport model just a little better! Great video overall. I know specs for both models are available from the MFG's websites but perhaps a mention of TX / RX audio specs would have been a nice round out to the evaluation (i.e. RX audio frequency response). 73, Ed K6HP

Cool shootout, Bob! Interesting you had a cameo for the David Clark's. I used a set in a friend's helo and, in that environment a noise cancelling mic is an imperative. Also interesting factoid (to the best of my knowledge right now), the military uses David Clark's for aircraft crew comms as do the fire services. Hmmm... idea: how 'bout shootout between ham headsets and those designed for 'professionals'? I can see a use for noise cancelling mics during field day where phone ops are in progress in close proximity to one another.

14:01, WHY did you identify the two headsets when doing the TX Mic test? Didn't you want your judges to experience a blind test? All objectivity went out the door!

What I miss in this shoutout is the weight of both headsets.. Weight is important, during a contest you probably have these things on your head for many hours. I found out that the Radiosport is about 550 grams and the Heil is 482 grams. So the Heil is about 15 % lighter, in my opinion a big plus... 73 Coen, PA5KM

The Heil ear cups are UNCOMFORTABLE and rough feeling to the ears.

Purchased a PRO7 IC and using a ICOM IC 7000. My problem is that the microphone cause RFI and distorts the display. Tried it on two rigs with the same result Has anyone had this problem?

That seems like overkill for headphones that you're going to use mostly to listen to beeping and noisy radio transmissions. Maybe it's just me.

In your shoot out, you mainly had voice ops. I don't know if you are a cw op or not. It really doesn't matter if you are. Bottom line, I'd love to see a headset shootout for cw ops! I am a new cw op. This past field day, it was a cluster fuck at the site. Too much on site qrm from people bullshitting and shining flashlights around at night. Even though you may or may not be a cw op, I'd love to see a review of headsets for cw only. I'm leaning towards the radiosport for now. I couldn't give a rat's ass for the mic quality. I'm interested in external sound rejection and clarity of weak signals. Could you put together a video for the rare few cw ops?

I can't wrap my head around spending that much money on a headset. If I made money hand over fist, I probably would feel different. I have a Heil Proset Elite 6 and I hate to admit that I bought it barely used from a S/K for $65. That being said, I hear weak signal that I would've never heard otherwise and that phase switch is just amazing. Sometimes I can flip that switch and bring somebody from the back to the front (I am half deaf in one ear and fine in the other).

The Yamaha CM500 are good enough for me. $50. Plugs right into the K3 / K3S that supplies bias voltage to the mic.

I have a challenge for you for your next shoot out good set of headphones with mic for under $100 and then compare them against your Pro's . In joining your shootouts good videos I've been off the air for over 30 years and just less wants purchased that FT 1200 with a four band vertical to get started with

0:25 Why do so many hams tap the microphone to check if it's on? It is damaging the mike FFS. I assisted in last year's SDR Academy (www.sdra-2016.de/), a subconference of the Friedrichshafen Ham Radio Hamfest. A staffer of the Friedrichshafen trade fair company told us SDR Academy volunteers to warn the lecturers not to tap the microphones. They have to replace several mikes each year after the hamfest because they have been destroyed by tapping, and this happens usually only during the hamfest, not during the other 18 or so trade fairs they host all year round.

All the "Participants" are over 50 where hearing loss is noticed. So, the only way this test would be valid if each individual had a hearing test prior to find out where their hearing losses are. So, while the effort of your video is commendable, I don't think it is a valid test. What I did find interesting is your hook to reel in the viewers - the girl.
