For my BK-7 I slipped a piece of bicycle inner tube over the tang and attached the stock scales over it. This added a considerable amount of grippyness and comfort to the handle and is a cheap and easy way to up the BK-7’s game. Cheers!

I've done that on filet knives before, it's a great trick for something that's going to get used in adverse conditions. On my becker I ended up using a cloth gaffer tape that's been holding up surprisingly well (unfortunately only have some short scrap sections of inner tube left).

"Survival" knives are supposed to be the multi tools of the knife world. Good enough at a multitude of tasks and tough enough to last. Both seem to qualify.

I've always been interested in the falkniven knives but they shot up wayyy out of my price range. Kabar bks for me, for $150 to $200 U.S. you get the knife, micarta grips and kydex sheath with an edge you don't need to redo and you kinda get them on payments, knife, then grips, then sheath. But it's the edge geometry that I like the most. Great vid btw.

I've both, for me the A1 just shades it because I'm on boats/Kayaks a fair bit and the stainless steel is great. But, the BK7 is a really good knife. Nice video, cheers for sharing.

For buyers looking to decide between the two... One thing to take into account with Fällkniven is that after a long time of hard use, if the blade has lost its shape, you can just send it to Fällkniven and they will completely regrind and restore the blade (both edge and finish) for just about $10 (+shipping). From what I've heard they also replace the handle if needed, but I don't know if that costs extra. Regardless, it makes the sadistic price a little less painful. Funny thing about the pricing: The Fällkniven knives are actually cheaper in the US than they are here in Sweden. At the time of writing, the cheapest I can find the F1 in Sweden is about $180 and the A1 is about $237. On Amazon.com they are $111 and $190 respectively. With Mora it's the opposite - they are a little cheaper in Sweden than in the US.

Shouldn’t you learn to work on and maintain your own tools? Part of the self reliant mindset of most of the people buying these knives I think.
@Blodhosta
@Blodhosta 3 года назад
@@ostekuste3646 It's certainly good to be able to care for one's own tools but also to know one's limitations. Personally I wouldn't try it with e.g. Fällkniven F1 because of the convex grind and the hard stainless steel which makes it more difficult than, say, a carbon steel scandi grind. But of course I agree with you that the ideal is to have the skills to do it yourself.

Since I live about 2 hours from Olean, I love reviews on our knives (Becker, Ka-Bar, Ontario) from so far away. Of the knives made here in NY, my favorites would be the Ontario Blackbird SK5, the Ontario Rat-7, the Ka-Bar Gamestalker (the best knife for field dressing a deer I've ever used) and the Becker BK16. Great video, very fair and thorough.

I can't speak for the Fallknivin, but I am quite fond of my BK7. The ergonomics are great, the steel is great it does everything I ask it to do with gusto. A great slicer. I have added a choil to the BK7 and micarta scales. I also reprofiled the edge and a better sheath. Great video. I

The A1's permanent handle is a no-go for me.. looks shabby over time, cant be sanded, reshaped, repaired, removed or replaced... I sold S1 and A1 15 years ago and dont miss them a bit. The A1x is waaaay too expensive and thick. The only permanent handle knife I own is the SRK 3v and I have two of them.. why? Because when the first gets chewed up I'll give it to my kid to beat up and I'll break out the 2nd new one, by the time its shot I'll be dead or too old to give a damn. And I'll only have $250 into the pair of them. I forgot, I also have a really old BK7, I think it's 1095, its a great all-around user with good balance and a decent edge/grind profile. You simply cant go wrong with the BK's or the SRK.. but you can definitely go wrong with the Fallknivens considering their price and brittle tips.

BK7 has better handle by far and also better blade design. Only advantage of the overpriced and overated Fallkniven, is the tip design, and the convex edge, which can easily be done on the Becker, with a little experience on sharpening. Also ,the BK7 has a way more ideal steel, that's why it;s edge never chips, while the Fallknivens chip like crazy. BK 7 is by far better and with some work, it can become one of the best knives, if not the best at that size and category of knives.
@shamitoson
@shamitoson Год назад
@@greekveteran2715 better handle? Well it’s bigger, which I prefer. But it’s hard cheap junk with no texture. Swap them for micarta and it’s much better. Also I don’t think you can say 1095 is superior. Less chippy sure, but rusts super easy and can’t hold an edge. I have an S1 and a BK-2. The S1 is waaay superior in every way except handle thickness.

I like BK 7 more than all 3. Fallkniven overated, SRKs quality has dropped really low these days, go with BK 7, or if your wallet is heavy, then TRC Mille Cuori.Other high end, the Kizlyar Supreme Sturm CPM 4V!! Another great survival knife design and probably the best knife TOPS makes, is the TOPS Hog 4.5. A budget solution on a really good combat-general utility knife, is the Ka-Bar Mark 1 with Kraton handles. All these, are some of the best, general use knives. For example, the Mark 1, can be a great hunting knife and an excellent bushcraft knife, that can outperform Moras. Especially if you know how to improve the v factory edges. A couple of years late, but others may see this, so it could be helpfull. I spent thousand of dollars and hours testing knives, that's my experience out of it.

Nice review. Subscribed. Regarding the grip. A slightly narrow handle (with thermorun - Fällkniven) gives room/perfect grip when using gloves/mittens. In other words - my Fällkniven A1 pro is my choice for outdoor activities during the winter. I don't own a BK knife yet because of the coating. I do understand why they add it - but I don't understand why they don't make a version without it (disregarding the BK2/BK9 version with that clearcoate finish since they ruined those with the logo).

I know this is an older video and seeing as how the Ontario RD6 is getting harder to find now and the RD7 was discontinued, what do you think of those two? Full flat grind, 5160 steel, 1/4" thick, micarta slabs on full width tang, striking pommel and full flat grind. I'm trying to find an RD6 now and pair it with my BK7, BK9 and SP51 for hiking/camping/backpacking.
@eachday9538
@eachday9538 7 лет назад
Great comparison, really interesting. You did forget to mention that the A1 would be better for running an enemy combatant through, while the BK7 would be better for some Gurkha chopping/slicing moves, I assume. Penetration testing would actually be really interesting. A bit less applicable to day to day use than edge retention, and definitely brings some murdery vibes, but I'm genuinely interested in how geometry effects this metric. I think it is fair enough to include, the knives have been designed to some degree for thrusting, piercing movement, it would be good to see their extreme range. Just wear a lab coat or something to keep it all professional and scientific, and so you don't make Lynn Thompson blush.

Enough of a chance that if I was to bother to pay $300 for the privilege to lug around 300 grams of pointy steel with me I would want to know that it can actually get stabby someday if required. It would indicate that a lot of better options had not been implemented or had failed, but that's, you know, what a combat survival knife is for!

I spent $100 and bought an Ontario RD-6 which is around the same length as the Falkniven, and it's a quarter-inch thick spine, and wider blade.
