I don’t appreciate the joking about Kamila’s name or the joking in general during this interview. Kamila is a 15 year old girl. She’s a minor who has not been looked after by her coaches and handlers. She has been humiliated in front of the world. Imagine how this will affect her ability to trust people. She does what she is told to do and says what she is told to say. It’s not okay.

She is 15 years old. At this age there are some girls so far ahead of their age, almost young women. And there are others at this age still somehow being innocent children to whom Kamila belongs. Just take a close look at her and her eyes, and you realize you would not be surprised if she still believed in Santa Clause while her life is focused almost completely on her passionate love and joy of skating. Doping? To her knowledge? No way, never. Period.

I am so sad about all of this. Life has been hard for so many of us for the last couple years. Then, last fall, I happened to watch Kamila Valieva's Skate Canada debut. The announcers were gushing about her perfection. I was in awe of the beauty of her skating and her joy that came with it. I watched each competition since then--she made me cry, it was so beautiful. She didn't need quads to leave us breathless as we watched. She certainly didn't need drugs to attain such perfection and beauty. I don't understand why she did this or why the adults in her life thought she needed this. Every commentator and ex-figure skating champion that glorified her for the last 3 months is ripping her apart this week. I don't want to get into the debate about whether or not she should skate now. (I think I've lately read/watched enough to conclude that these young Russian skaters are disposable-their coaches will be able to replace her with a different child for the next competition.) For me, I feel like something beautiful has been lost and replaced with something bitter and sad and we are all worse off for it.

why everyone is acting and saying big words about a case which is not investigated and resolved yet?? That's why she was allowed to skate by the court because there is no clear evidence that she doped. If it was she would have been out. Until now we only have allegations. Why can't you respect the court's judgement?? Why are they for? They put Kamila sit 7 hours at the hearing. They did more investigation than anyone of you who stone this innocent girl just because you heard some news in the TV. Shame on all of you who judge somebody without waiting for the final result. How would you feel if in a few month they will reveal the truth and it will come out that somebody deliberately put something in her sample since it was sitting there for 45 days. Or simply it was a mistake on the result which happens quite often in labs. Look at covid cases, how many false negative and false positive results come out. She was by far the very best and unique which is incredible, that's why it was easy for the corrupt bad doers to know who should they slander at the olympics. Until now we have no proven facts, only nonsense accusations to feed the media and the stupid people through that. She and her team are not allowed to defend themselves publicly until the case is going on, they should be silent, however this must be valid also for the media and for the haters as well. No punishment for harassing someone who might have been proven innocent after a thorough investigation? What a shame on you who are so blind that don't see the possibility that she was accused with something she is not guilty in. Every athlete says how easily you can find yourself in this situation just by eating a poppy seed bagel or taking a pain killer or anything that might look harmless and in fact it can turn out to bring a bad test result even though they didn't take any banned drugs. Every test can bring false or misleading results. It might be the case here as well. Since nobody was as obviously good as her, no athlete was targeted deliberately for this nasty fabricated accusation only this pure talent. Shame on those who condemn her now including all those athletes who show hypocritical attitude however they know very well how easily you get there by being completely innocent. Shame on everyone who say a bad word about her until we have the final result of the court!

@Leslie Lewis, that is exactly how I feel. She has put so much hard work into where she's gotten (and likely endured quite a bit of abuse along the way), and no drugs on earth can give somebody the grace, musicality, and expressiveness she displays when she skates. She didn't need the drugs. I can't imagine what hell she's going through right now. Who can know what's really going on, but I can't help but think that the adults in her life are totally responsible. You do what your coaches tell you to do, especially if you're that young. I hope the coaches reap some real consequences this time around. This is not fair to anybody -- Kamila, her competitors.. or her audiences. It's heartbreaking.

I really appreciate a more unbiased opinion on this situation. I imagine it would be difficult to remain calm when you've been through the same competitions. The fact is as the public we don't have a good deal of information. While Kamila is most certainly old enough to understand the wrongness of doping I do think the number one concern is her health. I think we forget that athletes are people. Even if the situation ends up putting her clearly as guilty down the road, I would be concerned about her mental health first and foremost.

A TRACE! 2) All other samples are clean. 3) She seem not need any drug and medicine. She is young and strong, also it is not an athletic. People love her for the artiscism. ... Good show, guys. Great to see, and hear, Kaetlyn again. I have been a figure skating fan for quite a long time. My mother loved to watch the competitions on TV in the early days. (I'm talking here about Toller Cranston's era, perhaps a little earlier.) My concern for the sport today is where is it going? What direction is it headed in?? The ladies are now doing Quads in competition. I honestly don't know what the guys are doing, but no doubt much more complex, challenging, and potentially dangerous maneuvers than in the past. Back in Toller Cranston's time there was something of a dichotomy between 'artistic' skaters and the more athletic type of skaters; eg, Elvis Stojko. The judges were influenced accordingly. Where do the ladies go from the current Quad Ceiling of skating? I just wanted to make a general point regarding the sport's direction. That little girl is only 15-years-old and her nervous system is being affected intensely by this recent x-x-stressful situation. She has to live with it, and its effects, for the rest of her days. I think anyone who's not clean during the particular competition shouldn't be allowed to compete, but at the same time, she tested positive 2 months ago, so how should the IOC make the call if she does test negative in the Olympics? No matter what, it's unfair to the other athletes who competed clean, and to come out short on the podium because an athletes suspected of doping placed higher than you would be really difficult. I do feel bad for Kamila, her team really let her down assuming she really wasn't aware that she took the substance. But if she does test positive in Beijing, she shouldn't medal

@caitlinfurgal2146 2 года назад
I think the issue with the old test being positive is that it would have potentially helped her train harder. I saw an interview with Meagan Duhamel where she talked about how much energy goes into training quads, and how when she and Eric were training the throw quad they could only attempt maybe 4 in one day. So having an advantage training at that level, even just having the energy and capacity to do a couple more attempts per day or a couple more program run throughs, could make a HUGE difference. It’s not just that these athletes shouldn’t be testing positive at the Olympics, it’s that they shouldn’t be testing positive EVER, during practice or competitions, for the reason I mentioned above. That being said, I do also feel terrible for Kamila, both as an athlete with so much talent and promise and as a young person who, knowingly or unknowingly, has been given substances that could be potentially dangerous for her health. I completely put the blame on her coaching team and the adults around her and they should be held accountable. I also feel bad for the other Russian athletes in the team event if they were skating clean and if they do eventually end up with the medal being taken away. At the end of the day, though, it’s not worth sacrificing the integrity of the sport and the safety of the athletes for medals.

But wait, legal or not, you drink drugs that make you stronger and you win, but WADA says it's all right, it's legal. Is it fair to other athletes who come out already knowing that you took drugs and they won't beat you? No, it's as unfair as doing it covertly, but you keep doing it and it's no less depressing for your opponents. You are talking about honesty and fairness, but are you honest yourself after the whole world learned last year that many athletes from the US and other countries are taking drugs that are banned by WADA? After the sanctions of Japan last year, Biles showed a poor result, without her drugs, refused to continue, she proved by this that they helped her to take high places. Let's take all her medals, just like everyone who drinks drugs, even if it's for health. It will be honest and fair if the sick will perform in the Paralympic sport, and not with healthy ones))) And it’s too cunningly they came up with someone who has a migraine, she drinks medicine for migraine, but it increases her physical data. Is it fair? No. In such rules there is no honesty and integrity. I won't be surprised if all countries have their own laboratories that make new drugs that are not on the WADA list. I'm sure. Why, before Sochi, Russians were not caught so often on drugs, and after Sochi, Russians all decide to actively drink them? This is strange, very strange. I wonder which country will be the culprit of such scandals next? Which country will stand in the way of the United States to medals ... if the world still remains as it is now?)))))

There is a committee for that, or wait 4....and they ruled she can skate. There are also rules in place for a person of her age and it's a very confusing situation with tests, timing, misinformation, blame, blah blah blah. Let her skate, then investigate. If she is positive (they should still have her B sample) then don't give her medals and ban her, if she is not then carry on. Either way an investigation into everyone surrounding her should be done and anyone found guilty of tampering or giving her pills without her knowledge should be banned for life and end up in jail. I don’t think the Canadian Olympic committee or the United States Olympic committee are taking an adequate stand against this! The only way we’re going to ever see changes if there is international outrage and pressure brought to bear on Russia to the level that something actually gets done. The only appropriate course of action at this point would be a complete ban of Russian athletes from figure skating, and all sports really, for at least two Olympic cycles!!! As well as the world championships of all of the sports! Following that, there should be a complete severance of athlete testing and the Russian anti-doping agency! For at least a decade, Russia should not be allowed to test it’s own athletes because they cannot be trusted! Shelly, if you know anything about figure skating, particularly how the RUSSIANS train their skaters, it doesn't make a difference if she's 5 or 19. It is par for the course for the Russians to drug their skaters to enhance performance. They used Valieva as a TEST case because the rules allowed her, as the Russians planned, to SKATE UNDER THE RULES, pun intended. They knew the could get away with cheating, and they have. Valieva's positive test should have BANNED her from skating, period. If she was 16, she would be out.

She used drugs regardless her age, regardless how she got them. That’s another story to get to the bottom of and the who’s and why’s and whatever’s. Bottom line drugs were in her system and whoever is responsible is just not relevant to whether she should skate. She should not. She and everyone else needs to be treated equally and even though she may not be responsible, she needs to realize whoever is responsible will not be allowed to get by with it with no repercussions. Tara Lipinski was 15 when she won gold and she knew, she said she wouldn't even eat a poppyseed bagel! I also believe the scoring is being skewed here as well now. If the results had been back sooner she wouldn't have been allowed to even go to the Olympics. When someone dopes and is allowed to remain, or even if the coaches are the ones doping without letting her know that. The key is anyone can know that if the urine test doesn't come clean, the athlete shouldn't be allowed to compete cause it isn't a level playing field. Russia shouldn't have even been allowed to come due to their doping issues in the past. Basically the message is we'll slap your hand, but we'll allow you to compete.

@bixbycro

I would hesitate to cast her as a liar… #1 because she is still basically a child and #2 because when someone so young has dedicated their entire lives to winning a gold medal (and sometimes that commitment was not actually made of their own free will) because it represents a potential future that is likely far superior than they could otherwise obtain… a lie becomes a very complex concept. She could have been given pills or meds and told they were something else… she could have been given true information about the risks of what she was given but misled about what it was for. It would be more than reasonable and very natural for her to lie because she knows she made a poor decision and got caught. Think back to when you were 15 (if your old judgmental memory allows you to) or have empathy and put yourself in her shoes, under the same pressure. Get off your high throne (try not to break your hip). Also, the world is different from when you went through different phases of life… the world itself has changed, even on a daily level. Someone can inject beef with all kinds of hormones that make me pop hot on a drug test… and I could very well claim a stupid reason for exposure like “I never took anything… in fact, the only thing that is different from any random normal person is the fact that my coach feeds like burgers all day every day”…. Maybe I’m lying about knowing, maybe I’m not. *YOU* CAN’T “tell” if I’m lying because you don’t know any of the actual facts.

I promise you, MANY more countries should be banned if you don't want systematic drugs cheating in sports. I'm no apologist for Russia but it's laughable when people think they're the only country that should be banned.

You may insist you’re not an apologist but then what is the point of your whataboutism? There’s this one country we know is doping. So much so that they’re really good at it but they keep getting caught doing it. If you don’t see this being wrong and some thing to address you’re either being facetious or not thinking clearly. Who said “ROC” should be the only entity that should be banned? Entity cos… they’re not even participating like other countries. not even allowed to use their flag and anthem for…. Oh what was the reason? Doping! State sponsored nationwide big ass organized doping…. No sir, not every country has that. And if they do we should ban them too.

But as she stated the young lady should not be allowed to skate. The decision to allow goes against the rules. So then trust in system is lost. Should be alright for one but not for another. No give on the rule. Now the integrity of Olympics is in question. Pretty sad.

@@vlad84mir BUT remember you must test negative every time for 60 days before an event. She failed. That's the point. Rules set for a reason.The drug is an endurance enhancement. Which gives her the edge over others competing. Enhancements are taken in sports not during an event but before to get in more practice which builds up strength to endure overall. She admitted she took drug within the days required to be drug free. Whether by error (!) or by choice it was taken. That's should have been automatic suspension. No give on the rule. Her age should not have mattered. She played hurt child when she is a very intellect talented teenager of 15 (soon to be 16) year old.

Kaetlyn Osmond, here is an entertaining challenge for every complaining skater: Let the Olympic committee allow all whining folks to consume right at this very competing moments as much as they want from the same substance that Kamila had only a trace amount of in her system by mistake (three months ago, while testing negative during the recent competition) and see if they can deliver the same stunning performances that she did! Yeah... why not, I say! U are completely missing the point, of course drugs should not be allowed, in that case however this trace amount did not make her the brilliant skater that she is, consequently, if anyone else takes as much as they want from this heart medication (if suddenly it becomes legal) they won't simply become better performers than her!!! Here is even a better suggestion: let everyone, except Kamila, take same medication now, she will still win... leave the child alone, what a performance at her end… she is winning with her unique talent, grace and technicality, not due to drug enhanced performance!!! This is not a bodybuilding competition!!! ... …even the intense looking amazing jumps that she does are based on inertia, angular momentum and superior technique rather than strenuous performance that may benefit from drugs… a trace amount in her system three months ago by unintentional mistake... how this would make her the great skater that she is! Give same substance to the rest and none to her, she will still perform better...

In defense of Kamila Valieva and all Russian talented, hardworking athletes. Can not forgive beautiful Sochi performance? Fabricated doping scandal, keep playing without the rules: banning / not inviting without explanation, no national attributes. But our athletes keep winning, generations changed, but you never admit your wrong doing. This time you went too far by desire to keep your fabricated story alive. You set up and tortured a child. Hopefully she is not irreversibly psychologically, motivationally damaged, and still will believe in humanity and fair play after all of this. Bless you, Kamila!!! WADA, IOC, ISU bureaucrats and other involved in this set up hunt: you are evil, cruel, inhumane rascals and mediocracies. SHAME!!!!!

Dear Russian friends who read this post, I am French and do not speak a word of Russian, so I express myself in English. You must Know that you are not alone in the face of the big Anglo-Saxon propaganda which takes advantage of Valieva's misfortunes to accuse you. Many people in France are seriously beginning to be fed up with this American propaganda that is imposed on us all year round. We haven't forgotten that you spoke French at the Tsar's court. I hope we will do this great europe again, which goes from brest (in france) to vladivostok. In the meantime, I wish the best to this wonderful Kamila Valieva and the worst to those who are hounding this fifteen-year-old girl.
