So I'm just going to go ahead and assume this is Japan's version of Ring Around The Rosie. They both have dark meanings if you listen to the lyrics close enough, and they both revolve around going in a circle while holding hands. Kagome Kagome is just a little different, because of the one person who must stand/sit in the middle.

I remember playing/singing a very similar song when I was a child. When you're a child everything's rainbows so didn't bother me much, but damn, change the speed and tone and you get a totally different aspect shown of it.

All i think of is Kagome from Inuyasha.

My friends and i were having a tour, we're staying in a hotel. We couldn't sleep bc we're still going on some joke, then one of us sang this to scares us so we can get to sleep after the joke. But then we realized it was really a bad decide, we couldn't sleep, i was the one who stayed up longer. Once i closed my eyes, i feel the horror vibe came after i heard the song, then i opened my eyes making sure there's nothing in my bed until i heard the wardrobe creecked open. We didn't sleep after that.

to make it even more sad & creepier; apparently the origin of the song is sung by a mother not a child & has to do with child loss...but it depends on the way it's words are arranged. Kind of like "ring around the rosies" being about children dying of the plague. Some versions are about children bullying children, but bullying is more like beating up, instead of picking on. Its basically about the fear of a child dying & how it's like something that could be waiting behind you, unexpectedly, & could happen to anyone. I only know all this because I looked up what it means in shinto if you lose a child or have a miscarriage. In shinto; if a child dies or is stillborn, they can't move on or reincarnate. The other children represent the hope that the mother would have that other lost children would encircle & protect her lost child in eternal wandering.

For people who are indeed confused: Kagome Kagome or "Circle you, Circle you" is kinda of like a different version of ring around the rosie. It's more of a game though. It is a song about a convict about to be executed, Kagome is the prison cell and the bird is the person in the middle (namely almost always called the "Oni" or prisoner) and the end of the song represents the convict/prisoner wondering who their executioner is (the person behind) or their disembodied head looking/staring at their own body. The actual rules are the people sing while walking around in a circle, one person in the circle will be blindfolded. Once the song ends the person will have to guess who the person is behind them. If they guess wrong they are out. It's best played with five people and people you know the voices of. I hope this helps.

dude all my childhood days i've been playing this demon game....i'm from india btw and there's a similar game where the person sits blindfolded or with closed eyes and the other one runs/walks in circles, sneakily leaving handkerchief or any other piece of cloth just in general as a clue, in the end they have guess whether they were the chosen ones without looking behind and if correct, they'll switch places. the difference is we sit in a group so you never know..

The way I translate it is; Kagome, kagome, the bird in the cage When will it come out? It can't see (because of plain ol' darkness in the song's context, in the game you're supposed to be blindfolded) The crane and turtle fell Who is the executioner? (who's behind me? is a slang term for that) Also "kagome" means "cage's eye" or where you can look through the cage. So, yeah, just like how Ring Around The Rosey involves everyone dying, this is also not a very kiddy song.

I heard a long time ago that this song, that i have been looking for forever, was a children's nursery rhyme, kinda like how we have all of ours such as the "London bridge is falling down" and just as ours actually has a deep meaning behind it, which is creepy. For this little rhyme it is suppose to be a sacrifice song, so as the children sang it, the kid in the middle, would disappear, as the sacrifice, but it was only supposed to happen a few times a month or something, not every kid that was in the middle would disappear. This is just what i heard, and i think it makes sense, so i thought i should share lol, has anyone else heard the story behind this rhyme?
