Kahu Mahanga, was an exciting fighter, defense not the greatest, but he carried a devastating punch. The 1960s, the golden days of NZ professional boxing
This was Kahu's finest hour, however having seen Mundine fight several times in person I have to say Mundine is the most exciting fighter I have ever seen, a bit like Mike Tyson in his later period - you could see he was very very good but never did quite know what was going to happen
I remember 10th November 1969 well.Walked out from behind the curtain at the stadium for the first fight on the card my 1st pro fight in awe of the biggest crowd seen at Festival hall.My opponent Guisseppi Petrucci .What a classic fight was the main! Tony was surely a great boxer fighting the best in the world!
I’m a Maori who grew up in Aus.And spent a lot of time in prison with Aboriginals and they would say Mundine had a glass jaw.But that shot that knocked his shield out was a perfectly timed massive power shot.which was in between punchers while Mundine actually was trying to finish him ,where any fighter knows that is those are the worst shots to be caught with.plus it was late in the fight and the round .when he was tired. And he got straight up.I’ve only seen this and the monzon fight .But the glass jaw thing ,I don’t see it
@@ComaToast1 and that goes for aboriginal s too so much wasted talent.freakish athleticism and tough too I know many aboriginal s and there’s one that comes straight to mind he not only could have been a world champion but a legend and he died in prison a couple of years ago where he spent majority of his life.our people get caught up in similar cycles as yours . But aboriginals have had world champions , gold medalists and your right brother my people have talent just need better programs and more attention outside of rugby.
and it was fought in good spirit...they were both gr8 sportmen..who really appreciated the skill of boxing...watch how many times they acknowledge each other at the end of a round......a ton of heart from each man...my favourite boxing match of all time
Watched this fight with my old man brother and two mates. Never forget it. All boxing fans rate this fight as one of the best. And Tony Mundine was a absolute champ. Sorry that Kahu didn't fare better because he too was a terrific fighter.
Great fight. Mundine is all class but Kahu definitely benefitted from training under the great Ambrose Palmer. It is like watching a Middleweight Fammo. Great defence.
Kiowhatta C Chopper wasn't that bad of a bloke, and he probably did train at Palmer's gym...for a very short time. I know he served more than half his life in jail, and that he only spent a matter of months a free man.
first time i watch this brilliant contest man mahanga style man like of rocy maciano if his got a little pit of power with those shot .he will finish mundine quickly i like it thanks this maori man will be the best new zealand boxer ever
Tony was and is a great fighter with a lot of respect for the men he fought it is just a pity his son never had the the same respect his father had for another fighter,,Tony was a very quiet sort of fella and never bragged about how good he was, i really dont think Tony knew how good he was, maybe the public would have accepted Tony jr if he took after his dad instead of being the big mouth brat he turned into too
TV Ringside, compulsory viewing in the years when many differences were resolved with a flurry of punches. Football, personality clashes, pubs. We're too delicate these days, pity help Australia if we ever need to raise an army, we might have to put the lawyers in khaki...
SPARRED with Ron Beekon. A great boxer. He beat mahunga. Tony Mundine was a great fighter. What a pity he had a f--,kwit for a son, Tony never shouted like his son. Earned a lot of respect.
Some people say Mundine had a glass jaw, but I'll never forget my boxing trainer's reply to that in our gym once in a discussion, himself a former Australian champion... He pointed out that Mundine fought some of the hardest punchers of the era.
In Australia we have George kambosos, geale, choc and Lionel rose. I’ve gotta say Lionel rose is our most prestigious fighter but Tony Mundine was our killer. /-O-/ BLACK PRIDE
Yep the champ goes into obscurity and the canvas back becomes a champ in his own backyard same old story across the Tasman good fight in all. respect to both fighters.
Tony snr. was only 19 when he stopped. All the men who beat Tony snr. would have put Anthony Mundine to bed ie, LOUI RODRIGUEZ-BENNY BRISCOE-KAHU MAHUNGA-MATE PARLOV-CARLOS MONZONetc I F MY MEMORY SERVES ME TONY HAD APPROX. 84 PRO FIGHTS AND LOST ABOUT 9. A GREAT AUSSIE CHAMP.
Tony never sought a rematch. Ron Beekin had beaten Kahu some time before. After he returned to New Zealand after beating Tony locals said he had not improved from when Beekin beat him.
@@sten2246 You obviously do not follow boxing. Ron Beekin was avoided by Dick Blair and Tony Mundine because Ern McQuillan knew he would annihilate both of them.
