Here's Kai Tak Airport and Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong in the 1970's. Here's your chance to see a lot of airlines no longer in operation in full swing here. Some of those airlines include; Northwest Airlines, TWA (Trans World Airlines), Pan Am, MSA (Malaysia Singapore Airlines), CP Air ( Canadian Pacific Airlines) & Northwest Orient. It's great viewing watching the DC 8's, Boeing 707's & Boeing 747's taking off & landing.
Kai Tak Airport had rooftops mere meters from the runway. Skyscrapers scrape the clouds, while laundry dances on clotheslines, oblivious to the steel birds roaring overhead. This was the backdrop to Kai Tak, an airport nestled amidst the urban jungle, where planes and people lived in a thrillingly close embrace.
Landing at Kai Tak wasn't for the faint of heart. Pilots faced a gauntlet of obstacles: a sharp 45-degree turn mere feet above the Kowloon rooftops, followed by a steep descent onto a runway jutting out into the Victoria Harbour. This precarious approach, nicknamed the "Kai Tak Heart Attack," became a badge of honour for seasoned aviators and a white-knuckle ride for passengers.
But Kai Tak was more than just adrenaline. It was a gateway to a booming Hong Kong, a city on the rise. Stepping off the plane, you were greeted by the vibrant energy of a metropolis at the crossroads of East and West. The Hong Kong airport itself was a bustling microcosm of Hong Kong, with duty-free shops, bustling restaurants, and the chance to catch a glimpse of the legendary Dragon's Back.
Kai Tak Airport closed in 1998 & was replaced by Chek Lap Kok Airport.
In June 2013, the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal was opened on the tip of the former runway. Two public housing estates opened on the northeast area of the site in 2013, providing over 13,000 new rental flats. As of 2018, the public estates have been joined by some private residential developments, now nearing completion.
A small park and new hospital (Hong Kong Children's Hospital) have also opened.
A new Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station, Kai Tak, opened on the former airport land in early 2020. Another station, Sung Wong Toi, was opened in June 2021.
Construction of the Kai Tak Sports Park on the former airport land commenced in April 2019. Once completed, Kai Tak Sports Park will be the largest sports venue in Hong Kong and will include a 50,000 seat Main Stadium, an Indoor Sports Centre, a Public Sports Ground and multiple open spaces.
Kai Tak Sky Garden, a massive elevated garden, opened in May 2021. It occupies part of the former runway and apron. #KaiTak #KaiTakAirport #HongKongAirport
