Originally he's aware of the supernatural things, he simply doesn't care about them and tries to avoid the subject. In this case, when they mention the other Yugi, he figures only Atem is there, meaning Yugi is gone and therefore Atem lost a duel against Doma

I love the fact that Kaiba is so into Atem, so he did not need any words to understand there was a defeat... and by just reading his eyes full of sadness.
It seems Kaiba is much more of a dick in the english version than the japanese version. In this one, at least he seemed like he was willing to listen to Joey (or Jonouichi as he's called in the original version), but in the english one he seemed really uninterested and annoyed with him. Still though, either way I still like him.
To be fair, Kaiba has always considered Joey/Jonoucihi to be a second rate duelist, even when he made it all the way to the Battle City Semi-Finals and was one attack away from winning.
The Hunter yeah the Japanese he's not as hardened and actually has many layers to his personality. In the English version they really played him out to he completely heartless
And he was more willing to accept magic. It really annoys me how they made him so against in it the dub when in the first season, he built his new duel system specifically to beat Pegasus' eye

I love how in both sub and dub Kaiba is melodramatic and extra in an almost funny way (although FWIW dub is funnier, sub is able to make you take seriously even the most absurd of situations)
Till this point Yami Yugi never lost a duel truly it was shocking. Kaiba looked at him as glorious the King of duelists who can't be defeated it was a disgrace to lose even once that Yugi may not be the rival who he must overcome kinda like the excelled elite individual.
Not true. Yami also lost against pegasus. But if kaiba hadn’t given yami a hint of how to defeat slifer, yami would’ve lost. And if Marik hadn’t surrendered, yami would’ve lost against yami Marik.
The same duel Atem played the Orichalcos, he was already at a point where he lost the duel... if he DIDN'T play the card, there'd be no consequences. He was too proud to accept defeat.

Anyways, I’ve finally realized how loud Kaiba can talk WITHOUT even needing speakers. I’ve realized in DSOD (especially when he called forth his monsters). Holy shi, this guy can actually scream really loud and he’s not trying 😂

The subbed version definitely displays a lot more emotion here. Stuart can voice Kaiba fine, but the problem is the voice direction. If you watch the earlier dubbed episodes, then you will see that Stuart's portrayal is Kaiba is much better than in the later episodes. Even the re-dub sounds worse.
Funny thing is that the sub has the opposite. Yugi's Japanese VA is a huge example: watch a random Duelist Kingdom episode, then watch a random episode about 50+ episodes later to be sure, and you'd think it's a completely different VA altogether with how much he improved.
@@_Vengeance_ if i remember correctly yugi's VA was new to voice acting. i watched an early episode and he sounded very dry. battle city is around the time he started to show more emotion. in early dubbed episodes, the voices sounded more natural. while grayson may have been a miscast for joey, his acting was not bad for the scenario. for example, in episode 3, when he shows sadness for his sister after watching the video she sent him. kaiba also sounds much calmer like in the subs but did have a range of aggressive emotions. he was still arrogant but he at least respected yugi's friends (except joey).
makeinu doesn't mean stray dog it means "loser". it's what kaiba calls joey which causes him to imagine himself in a dog outfit 負ける means "to lose" and 犬 means dog, so literally it is something like "loser dog" but usually it's just translated as "loser" since that's how Japanese people use the word
I'm not sure the term "makeinu" can actually be translated as "stray dog" per say, it actually means "loser", but since the term is composed of "make" which means "loss" and "inu" which means "dog", it maybe kinda fits in some way, but probably not in that context. Then again, anyone who is more knowledgeable than me in Japanese can either come confirm or correct what I wrote.

No i don't think the 4kids dubs was "so much better," only certain moments. The dub did at least something right if we don't think it sucks like the rest of you. Okay, it wasn't actually "weak" per se. The vocal performances usually aren't at least. Difference is the choice of words was deeper in Japanese, but in a fit of rage from someone like Kaiba, simplicity was as fulfilling, if not more. There also was a greater sense of shock in the English voice than the Japanese voice, and it was highly appreciated. This was well done in both languages, but the scene was still better in English.
Honestly I like this part because of just how ashamed Yugi looks, and how disappointed Kaiba is. Plus there's no music distracting from it. The abridged version is better since it captures all that emotion with more powerful dialogue. The 4kids version wasn't bad, but considering how they were cramming in jokes while this moment was happening made it feel forced basically Abrided > Sub > 4kids dub. But all 3 were still good.

Just look at what season 3 did to him when his friends vanished in front of his face without him being able to do a single thing. Exactly! That broke him so much to the point where he gave in to the darkness in his heart and turned evil 😈, causing him to become Haō and then go around murdering innocent people like some irl GTA. Etc. so yeah! This duel here would definitely NOT be a laughing matter to him, because just like Atem, the loser gets their souls taken and sealed into a card

I used to watch and love japanese dub to death,and always hated the eng dub. But after laughing too much from watching abridge series, I just can’t go back to the japanaese dub of this scene and think “yeah kaiba, i’m also embarassed of yugi”
