If the mistake was wanting to be a world power like neighboring countries had been for centuries, yes, then he may have made the mistake too late, but he wasn't alone. Germany's destiny was its late birth. Carting troops from 2/3 of the world was not possible. The Germans couldn't have scores of Indians and Africans bleeding for them in the trenches. They had to bleed themselves.

The man who insulted and outsmarted Adolf Hitler, the man who made Germany on par with the triple entente, the man who was blamed for the frightful First World War, the most competent grandson of queen Victoria, the last Kaiser of the great German reich, he is Kaiser Wilhelm the second.

Wilhelm was the last man who tried to stop WW1 till the very end. It was back and fourth with Russia and Britain He is blamed for his foreing policy, that's point was to try make the relations better with everyone, he they even payed respect for the fallen french soldiers in the Frano-Prussian war. Even the naval expansion was about protecting German trade and intrests. However the brits couldn't take that they had a new economical "rival" and they tried to paint the whole thing in a way it was all about them. Even the Royal Navys officers aknowledged that Wilhelms naval expansion was completely rational and justified to keep it's own colonies. Wilhelm even made the peoples life better, he put a lot of money for poor peoples agricultural life and made the factories more pleasant to work.

It's soul crushing to see the contrast in the film reels. From one moment he's striding on a horse, honored by his soldiers as they march by him and in the other we seem him dressed modestly in exile in a simple cottage. No one ever blamed the New World. The Germans always understood that these very young states had allowed themselves to be tricked by the aggressive British. These young oversea states did not know what they were doing. The British knew very well and they and the French were responsible. However, I don't know what you mean by regaining glory. It is a common historical fact in science that Europe was destroyed as a global power in two self-destructions. From today's perspective, one has to say that it was a self-destruction of the entire western world. The white man is dying out and, to be honest, I'm not so sure that's such a bad thing for the world.

Warfare had a rapid change in doctrines and technology, it was hard to predict how an engagement would be fought. Man he also fucking had the giant balls to talk absolute shit publicly to Hitler during ww2.... calling nazi Germany a godless nation I think. Spectacular montage indeed. Wilhelm is some kind of an enigma to me. He was an aggressively assertive leader for Germany, the ultimate evolution of what Bismarck brought, the only difference between the two is that he preferred to throw his weight around as if it was necessary to cause so many crisis. He liked to play soldier a lot, but he also understood the gravity of WW1… Bad thing he was on vacation on his yacht during the July crisis. I can’t forgive him for not pulling his crap together and demonstrating the weight of his balls to the world, cancelling mobilization first and showing the Russians that war would not come. He didn’t. Even when that desperate messages between the Tzar and the Kaiser were exchanged (calling each other Nickie and Willy), they just were not strong enough to do it. I wonder what they would have done, have they been less corrupted by expectations and the image they portrayed of themselves (Wilhelm was evidently disturbed and Nicholas was inept). The world was plunged into darkness for decades because two weak men couldn’t back down. Have you ever read the final letter that Wilhelm wrote about Hitler while in exile before he died? He was pretty lucid in that final hour, bad thing he was not when it was needed of him.

The men who started World War I were based in Belgrade, St. Petersburg, Paris and London. The Serbian secret service planned the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand with the knowledge of the Russian secret service. And that wasn't the first attack. Since 1908 there have always been some in Bosnia. Austria-Hungary therefore had to defend itself if it did not want its multinational empire to fall apart. Germany knew this and had to help Vienna. The other major powers also knew that Austria-Hungary was fighting for its survival. And they also knew that Germany would help Vienna. The French government at the time, especially President Poincaré, had no interest in preventing a world war, which he could easily have done. Neither does the English government. Especially Lloyd George. Not Germany, but Great Britain finally had the opportunity to prevent the outbreak of the world war. All it had to do was moderate France and Russia and the time would have come for negotiations. But Lloyd George didn't want that. He saw the favorable opportunity to get rid of the German competitor. France, Russia and England would have joined forces even if someone other than Kaiser Wilhelm had ruled Germany. Anyone who thinks that their foreign policy is to blame for the outbreak of World War I knows far too little about the motives of their opponents: France wanted to take back Alsace-Lorraine and take revenge for the lost war of 1870/71. The national honor of the French demanded it. And Russia's motivation for waging the war in 1914 resulted from the internal tensions of the Tsarist Empire. Because of their anti-social, inhuman domestic politics, they were on the edge of the revolution and tried to rally the people behind them again with pan-Slavic politics in the Balkans. The Danube monarchy was in the way. And England feared that Germany would become economically stronger.
