Best way to explain the clones is this the Basic clones is an illusion just a copy of yourself that appears in thin air. Water clones are physical solid clones made of water and chakra. Shadow clones are also solid clones but they are only made with chakra. Both Water and Shadow clones can interact with the world and help you fight. In terms of strength or usefulness from lowest to highest it would be Basic clone, Water clone, and then Shadow clone. Remember Shadow clone jutsu was in the forbidden scroll for a reason.

When Kakashi said that there are probably children that far more powerful than him he was dead serious. Without spoilers, you must have remember that hidden villages are basically giant warrior factory. Those warriors called ninja. They train people from childhood to be ninja, i.e they produce child soldiers. Question: Why to do this ? Answer: You do remember why those villages were created, right ? It was explained early. It's military power for each nations. This is a post-war world where each nations still treats each other as a threat and such political and cultural conditions are easy for creating indeed dangerous ninjas. Including children ninjas. Something that annoys me about this stage in Naruto is how they try to confuse you before even explaining things. Kakashi's sharingan will be properly explained later

Congratulations, you reached the chapter people fall in love with Naruto! I hope you liked the scene of Naruto forcing Zabuza to release the water prison, you are going to see it lot of times in next chapters' recap. A minimum explanation about some of the jutsus they repeatedly use in the series. There are three jutsu that are called the basic three, which every ninja learns in the academy and you are going to see a lot: The Clone Jutsu, The Transformation Jutsu, and Replacement Jutsu. The Body Flicker Jutsu is also used a lot, and seen in this chapter. Clone jutsu is creating an illusion that as a copy and decoy of the caster. The basic clone they learn in the academy is just an illusion and has no physical body, which means it can't interact with the world around it. The different villages have different "solid clones" in with the give form and move a solid material, and cast an illusion to make it look like the caster. How durable and strong they are depends on how much chakra you use to make them. As they don't have living bodies, they can't cast jutsu either (there is discussion whether they can use techniques of their elements) and can't go far from the caster as they have to control them. Think of them as puppets. Transformation jutsu is what they use to change shape. It is a jutsu to trick the opponent, and is akin to wear a disguise. You do change your shape, and can take the form of other people, animals or objects, but you don't change any of your other characteristics. That means your weight doesn't change, nor you durability. Just because you turn into a metal sword it doesn't mean you become as hard as it, and you would still be hurt by hitting other sword. The Replacement Jutsu is what Kakashi does with the logs. There is a common misconception in the fandom that it lets you teleport and change places with something else. IT DOESN'T. As described in the manga, is super quick/hidden movement, in which the ninja picks something else close by, and places it where he was with an illusion disguising it as himself. The idea of that is tricking your oponent into thinking he got you with the attack to make him drop his guard and create an opening, or make him waste an attack on an object disguised as you. Theorically speaking, if you can't dodge the attack or get away of the situation, you wouldn't be able to use Replacement jutsu either (I say theorically because the show is a bit inconsistent in this regard). Kakashi couldn't use replacement jutsu to get away from the water prison because he couldn't get out of his own. Finally, Body Flicker Jutsu is what the Hunter Nin did at the end of the chapter to dissapear between the leaves. This isn't teleportation either, but a technique that combines speed, stealth and a distraction (in this case the leaves) to get away or get close without being seen. This is early Naruto, when you could still tell how strong a ninja was depending on their ability to approach unnoticed and detect hidden threats.

Kakashi simply predicted zabuzas next movements/jutsus by reading his body movement and chakra flow. Both are abilities that come with the sharingan. Although copying jutsus "ahead of time" is only possible because he already has such a vast knowledge of jutsus in general, copying a thousand technics and all, which is still a very impressive feat. He also actually can use all 5 basic chakra natures, but is only proficient in lightning and earth style, as those are the two he has inherently/trained extensively in.

I love the atmosphere they built here, with the mist its perfect for an intense clash :) its also great that they established how the kids simply cannot compete with the adults, they are not on the same level with Kakashi and Zabuza, so they cant really win this fight on their own, that helps with Zabuza being a proper intimidating antagonist and our kids having room for growth :) an ordinary clone is a simple image that cant fight thats the main thing to remember :) you could see here that a Shadow clone goes poof and a Water clone goes splash :D Naruto isnt an easy watch, feel free to go back to things, even take notes, it definitely helps cause there is a lot to this :) you will understand things more as you go on, you will get a lot more stuff, you are just 9 eps in this show got 720 eps :) dont worry you will get used to the cliffhangers :D

One more thing about different chakra elements. Not everyone can use all 5 chakra elements. Even in the whole series there are only few people who mastered and use all 5 Chakra elements. Water Fire Wind Earth Lightning These are 5 basic chakra elements. Earth jutsu uses earth chakra element, Fire uses fire chakra elements and in case of Kakashi, he uses water chakra element to perform both water dragon and water vortex jutsu.

So the clone thing is obviously the clones are stronger based on the persons charkra/skill/strength/ but also the amount of clones splits your strength and chakra between all the clones evenly. So the more you have the less strong they are.

Kakashi wasn't trying to make Naruto feel better. He was trying to give Naruto a little dose of reality. In the perspective of Naruto and his team, He's basically out of elementary school. He has learned the basics. Kakashi wants him to realize that Naruto has a long way to go. It has to be remembered that Gato hired Zabuza, his organization is still intact. There's really no way to predict what to expect. They have a long way to go, before they're even back at the village saving cats again.

Being a ninja is basically living Prop Hunt 24/7. Anything could be a ninja. Every crack in the wall could have a ninja hiding in it.

Shadow clones are an forbidden jutsu for a reason. They dont get into that till Naruto Shippuden but for now just think of it like this. Clone Jutsu - basic, cant touch Other clone Jutsu - can touch and perform jutsu like the main body. Different clones have different effects when they get destroyed. For example, water clones can explode like a water bomb, just dissipate, or turn into mist to drop visibility. Depending on how proficient the user is. And then on too of that if the person is really really proficient, they can probably add other effects but adding more effects tend to be more costly with chakra.

Clones as talked about in the first episode can be thought of as holograms which have no physical form. Shadow clones and it's variants such as water clones are clones with a physical form that are simply as strong as their user although they do tend to die after they take damage. These will also just be referred to clones a lot infact from now on just take clone to mean one with a physical form

Naruto did Transformation Jutsu, not a clone with the shuriken. It would literally hurt him to slam into Zabuza and it would hurt Zabuza other than having a kid flung at you. For the different types of clones, There are Earth Clones, Water Clones, etc. All are technically just illusions, in a way you can imagine the chakra forming a body of water and then imposing the likeness of the user onto it. They are durable but easily dispelled. A reason why Zabuza just doesn't beat them up, as any substantial force can damage the clone and disperse it. Shadow Clones are unique, they will explain it MUCH later but they are PHYSICAL copies of the user, not just illusions. Water clones, for example, are illusions. A sensory ninja specialising in identifying illusions and scouting would easily tell illusions apart from the real deal. They also require the user to control the clones. Shadow clones, however, are PHYSICAL copies and are unidentifiable from the real user. The users HAS to evenly distribute their chakra between the clones but each clone are able to use jutsus and fight like another real person. They are also individual copies of the user, they can think individually, devise complex plans without the need to consult the original, etc. Think of it like the trope of biologically Cloning people in sci-fi. However, the Shadow Clone Jutsu has one fatal drawback of having to "evenly distribute your chakra" Think of Chakra in game terms. You have a max of 100 MP. If your MP is at 0, you die. You need at least 10 MP to not faint. If you were to create 100 clones, you'd be put into a coma. That is how dangerous the technique is, and why its forbidden. It can also severely diminish your ability if you were to create Shadow Clones, as you would still need sufficient chakra to use jutsus even as a clone.

Watching this episode, I didn't notice at first that Kakashi looked at Sasuke when he was talking about kids stronger than him. Now it seemed to make sense to me. Re-watching Naruto you can find a lot of new details...

Clones are close to illusions. The ones that Naruto failed at. You can't touch anything with them. Distractions. Shadow Clones are corporal. They usually pop in one hit. That is how Zabuza can defeat them. he fought x number of Narutoes that disperse in one hit. They are perfect replicas of the original made out of pure chakra. Any jutsu can be used by the clone if the original knows it. Elemental Clones are a lot sturdier, are the element they come from (so hurting a fire clone may set you on fire), but are capped and lack some... special effects the SC have. Pretty much the SC split the chakra into parts. When they pop, everything they have remaining is returned. So they are dangerous as you split your chakra (too low and you die, hopefully just fall into a coma), but effective in time. They waste very little. Naruto used transformation. You copy the physical body of what you want to transform into. None of the properties. Just what they look like. So he was still Naruto as the weapon. Zabuza would just have Naruto slam into him.

this isn't a spoiler, i'll just tell you, he can't see into the future. You gotta remember a lot of the early ninja battles in this series are about deception, as Kakashi said "ninja must see through deception". He said yes to Zabuza as an intimidation tactic (make him afraid that he's stronger than he is), but what he was actually doing is a little more complicated, but a lot less impressive than seeing into the future lol. Think of the characters on this show as "ninja magicians", the way they win a lot of their battles is by tricking the opponent with smoke and mirrors, which is what Kakashi did here. He hypnotized Zabuza with the eye into making him think he could read his mind and see the future.
