I did the hike up Kala Pattar in 1974. We started in Lamosangu which is about 4 days walk before Jiri but we were able to fly out from Lukla afterwards even then. We would typically see 2 to 4 other trekkers during a days walk although I don't recall seeing anyone else the day we did Kala Pattar. Facilities were pretty basic in 1974. In Namche I got bitten by bed bugs and vomited from eating some nasty yak momo's, Pheriche was just 2 or 3 huts half buried and Lobuche was a single hut where I got a pile of uneven peat blocks to sleep on - still better than outside in the tent. Some things never change, however - slogging up a big climb, the altitude, the cold etc. Even now I occasionally have thoughts of going back but my wife says I should stick to armchair travel. With respect to your tips, we were half starved and freezing most of the time and as for clean socks - in one's dreams. My main memory of Kala Pattar is the freezing wind and dust in my face as we walked along the glacier. Cheers, L

Hi Russ. Loving your videos, subscribed the other day and have watched a lot. Base Camp is a dream of mine one day so it’s great to see some tips and your whole playlist on it. Hoping to do the London to Brighton 100km walk next May, have you done anything similar to that?

Ahh thanks so much! So glad you’re enjoying the videos and that you’re finding them useful! Sounds awesome! Yes I’ve done the South Downs Way which is 100 miles and runs from Winchester to Eastbourne and actually cuts through your route I’d imagine. It’s a good one, lovely countryside. 👍

Great tips. I was just up at Kala Patthar Dec 7 2019. Took me about 2 to 3 hours to get up to the top. It's can get super windy. I got up top about 3pm and watch the sunset till about 5:15pm. Yes you should drop your bag off and go light but bring extra layers and thick gloves. I put a plastic bag over my socks and put multiply pairs on to keep my feet warm. Make sure your phone/tech has a good charge of battery becuase of the cold winds the battery drains fast (Samsung S10 and Gopro). If you watch the sunset/sunrise bring a headlight. Also make sure acclimatise to that height and if not take some diamox (altitude sickness tablets). I met many people feeling sick becuase of the altitude.
