@@lolasupek9845 Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (In English, Puella Magi Madoka Magica). It's a magical girl anime, but since this is the end credits theme, you can probably tell it isn't gonna be light-hearted.
I actually found Madoka Magica when searching up 'Horror anime' I thought Google may have been drunk I watched it and all I got to say is that Google is definitely sober.
Thing is, this wasn't just some random grimdark song they forced into the credits of Episode 3 out of nowhere. We heard this song as early as the first scene of Episode 1, and during the fight scene of Episode 2. The show warned you it would have shades of darkness from the very beginning. Once they start playing this song during the credits, however, that's what tells you it'll *stay* dark.
THE WINNER agrees 👍 Although despite it being THE WINNER'S 2nd time watching the series, didn't notice the warning from the music in eps 1 and 2 as till he read your comment and went back to confirm THE WINNER says! 😬🤔
I don't know how many people knows about this but there is one interesting thing about the English title "Puella Magi Madoka Magica". Puella Magi in Latin means Magical Girl, but that's not the only meaning. Puella means "a young girl" but in certain contexts it can also mean "a female slave". Magi means "magician" with trickster personality, similar to Loki (from Norse mythology) or genie, so it can be translated as "deceiver". Then "Puella Magi" can be translated as "Slave of the Deceiver".
Although I love this interpretation, and how much I believe Urobuchi is a genius/sadistic writer... I really doubt they are well versed in Latin. I'm 99% sure they just look up mahou shoujo in latin.
@@OmegamxXIV For the same reason why HBO's Newsroom botched the episode about Fukushima. English to Japanese is not an easy translation, most Japanese anime I see botched their English, so I have even less faith for them doing latin right. Can they intentionally hid the "Slaves of the Deceiver" message? Probably. Will they keep quiet about it? Probably not. Is there a more probably way for them to do it? Yea, using the kanji, a feature in their language where they can easily slip in a message, but no.. Until the end Mahou Shoujo stays literally mahou shoujo, only thing hidden is the typesetting made mahou easily mistakeable with hai-kyou (abandon cowardice, hesitation). So yea, probably it was intentional, but occam's razor says otherwise. Also, no one here other than you call them illiterrate savages. Let's not be crass.
That "first ending" wasn't present on the original broadcast (credits were just played over the last few minutes). So technically Magia is still the only ed
I do so love this group because they have such powerful voices. There's kind of a trend that Japanese women tend to affect a higher pitched voice more often than not, whether that's a deliberate choice or their voices are just naturally higher than many western women. But Kalafina's members have a different kind of energy, and it feels like they invest more in their deeper range, and that's something I love to hear from a Japanese female band.
It feels weird to describe japanese women this way and to think they'd be that different from "western women". theyre women dude, like any other one with gorgeous strong voices. the trend of higher pitched gentle voices is because its what sells for semi cute feverish people who dont see japanese women as people
In my personal opinion, as a woman, it is easier to speak Japanese in a higher pitched voice. I have a very unique voice, nasally and slurred more than ~98% of the population and changing my tone changes the way I speak, so you can disregard that. However, I think it's also a cultural thing, as Japan definitely has It's problems with feminine standards, some unique and some similar to the west, especially America. I also see "guy protects soft distressed girl" more often in Japanese media. This culture also very much affects real life, especially in younger people, both men, women, and in-between. What's fascinating is that almost all the Japanese women I've met have a middle toned voice.
"madoka magica's opening theme: cute and happy" And then episode 10 comes along when the opening becomes the end theme and you find out the true meaning behind the song...
There's actually a reason for that. The promotion team purposely tricked the viewers with bright colors and light bubbly visuals and sound. They didn't want anyone to know when the curveball was thrown. Edit: the songs should actually be reversed. Random fact that I forgot to include before.
Huge props to Kalafina and also Yuki Kajiura who did most of the other tracks in the series too. Most people know Kajiura from SAO but I’m personally most familiar with her work on Xenosaga II and III and all the amazing tracks she did there.
I am not going to lie. It was this music and the scene in the first episode where Homura was duking it out with Walpurgisnacht that made it pretty obvious that this wasn't going to be your average Magical-girl anime. And when I saw it from Homura's perspective later on in the series it was just extreme nightmare fuel. watching her scream out to Madoka to not listen to Kyubey while she fell into the darkness was just disturbing. And then there were the end credits with the girls flickering outlines which was just spine-tingling every time
N Any negativity you felt from watching it- sadness or anger or anything else- can all be washed away. All you need to do is make a wish, and become a magical girl! Want to make a contract? /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
You wit here this at first, but very soon. Anyway, I really would recommend watching this, as long as you have a box of tissues by your side... Also, it's much more "deep" rather than frightening. There will be shocks (eps.3) but the more you watch, the more you cry, the more you think.

A while back, my friend was looking for a new anime to watch. I suggested that she should watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica. She said: "No, I want to watch something deep and dark." Again, I tell her to watch Madoka Magica. Again, she says no. Finally, after much pestering, I got her to watch it. When she got to the 3rd episode, she called me and asked me why I made her watch such a depressing show. My face then: :/
Skyrah1 I prepared a ton of tissue boxes for Rebellion. I found myself on my toilet, looking like I saw a ghost, and haven't stopped shitting for 8 hours.
Madoka Magica is like a candy shop build over a native american burial ground, on the surface, it's fun and smiles everywhere, but then you dig down and all the innocence just kills itself, in front of you.
***** Yeah i didn't watch any magical girl anime before but i knew the concept, but it's true that i kind of felt like i was watching a parody of something i don't know. But that didn't prevent Madoka from becoming my favorite anime
***** Yeah that's what i figured out when i watched the show, even if i didn't actually watch any magical girl anime before i knew the concept and what you usually find in them.
***** tbh in Madoka you have both. Fights are really well made, especially with the art style of the witches. And holy shit that Homura vs Mami fight in rebellion, man, it was awesome. Reminds me of the final fight of Stardust Crusaders.
I will miss you Kalafina :'( Keiko, Wakana and Hikaru, we fans will support you for your solo careers to come and hoping each one of you will be successful 💟 To Yuki Kajiura, who is the master behind Kalafina, thank you very much for presenting us these wonderful ladies and your wonderful compositions :)
@@isabelladt yep, yuki kajiura left the record label and i believe keiko said she would be leaving, too. the group was said to continue on as a duo, but we all know that there is no kalafina without all 4 girls.
LOL when I first heard the song I mistook it for tribal music until the vocals kicked in...in my defense, it was my sister listening to it while I was doing math homework along the sidelines of our shared bedroom
Josh Leitzel You ever gonna watch knk? :( Went through all that effort...I haven't had much time to be online, but that's the one conversation since we started talking that I want to finish. xD
I'm starting to feel kind of like a dick now, so MAYBE I'll finally marathon it all before I have to go back to the institution. Honestly I don't think I've watched any anime all summer. I've been having a resurgence of interest in video games instead.
Yeah same here, I've been replaying fallout 3 and new vegas, and I'm always playing halo. I've actually made it a point to really only watch anime with friends, so that it's a social activity rather than a solitary one. I'm finding that it works quite well that way. The one major show I've been watching with friends is hunterxhunter, which I'm enjoying thoroughly. I've also started noragami, the art of which I am in LOVE with, and sidonia, which has been good, as expected. A few years back I was marathoning shows in a day, on almost a daily basis, but it got to a point where I said enough's enough. Since then, I've really slowed down to maybe 1 or 2 new shows a month, but I almost always enjoy what I'm watching. From my own personal experience and talking with others, I see that a lot of people treat anime like it's an endless well of amazing shows, when it's really not. It pretty much follows the 99% rule, as with anything else, so I much more like the idea of spreading it out for the foreseeable future, instead of gobbling it all up and coming to a day where I say "oh, fuck, well what do I watch now?" Anyway yeah, always looking forward to that conversation in the fuzzy future. :p
English again lol >.< I interpreted the "after watching this series" to apply to the OP, which meant that he (after watching the series) couldnt understand why people would want to be a magical girl. However, it can also be interpreted that the "after watching this series" applies to the people who want to be a magical girl. Hope it doesnt sound confusing :P
KHRrocks That's an interesting way of interpreting what I said. After reading my post again, I can see how you could read it that way. There's nothing to worry about. Haha
Hikaru's voice type allowed Kalafina to do more of rock-influenced songs. Different voice types have different strengths and allow you to expand the styles of music you write for a group. She was a worthy addition.
Let me just say Kalafina is one of the best bands I have ever heard. I first heard them from Fate/Zero and I immediately fell in love. They're voices are like angels, the voice you'll hear when your in heaven. I watched Madoka recently and spent an hour looking for this beautiful song. One reason I love Fate is because I know this band will have some part of it. You go, Kalafina. The day they break up will be the day I die. P.S. For those of you who didn't know, Madoka and Fate/Zero are made by the same creator, but I don't think Madoka ties into the Fate series in any way.
I first discovered FictionJunction (Thanks to Pandora Hearts), then I discovered Kalafina (Thanks to FJ). I love both groups, but I admit liking Kalafina more....
Am I like the only one who likes this kind of music?!?!?!?! Because I feel like I'm the only kid in my entire school who listens to any music like this and adores it. Please someone let me know that I am not alone!!!
Homura continued to fight even when she had nothing to fight for. While magical girls were despairing left and right once they knew how awful the world really is once you're not a child anymore, killing themselves or others, Homura just ignored the warrior's pain. Even though she knew that she couldn't save Madoka or bring "her" Madoka back, Homura fought for all of us. Homura = Batman.

This is in my opinion the best anime ending theme. And is it just me or does Kalafina make the best anime opening and ending themes? Madoka Magica, Arslan Senki, Fate/Stay, and Aldnoah.Zero just to name some. :D
+Friendly “Jokivirta” Claw They were big many years ago when they first debuted in Garden of Sinners and also made their way into really mainstream anime like Madoka. Their success rely a lot on their mentor Yuki Kajiura who was actually the one responsible for getting their singing into these great anime, but Yuki Kajiura has been inactive for a while now. I heard she is going to be involved in a new anime soon, so I hope to see Kalafina get some more exposures.
+Gundam Magic Inactive? I guess you're talking about her doing OST for animes .__. Kalafina recently realesed a new album and all their songs are composed by Kajuira Yuki.
Sailor Italy Your quote replaced my old Skype message about lying cake and not so much lying snow (with reference to when it was snowing and no cake was present).
Madoka Magica aside, this song is a FUCKING BANGER even after more than 10 years. Thank you, unknown pretty ladies, for singing this. Edit: Unknown for me, *I* don't know who they are.
I saw someone on another video say that you never forget your first Kalafina song and I definitely think that's true when your first Kalafina song is *this*
@@FlorSilvestre12 It felt I was transported to another world for a moment. Even the production - camera, stage, and light direction - for that intro, leading to the entrance and unveiling of the ladies, gripped me. I stayed and watched an over 2-hour RU-vid concert which I’d never done before…after that I went bingeing! 😅
@@FlorSilvestre12 Something a little provocative to her fans: This is what I think Wakana’s vocal potential was for her head voice quality and logevity, in my opinion. ru-vid.com05f_eDU6Ycc?feature=share
Madoka Magica passed a lot of other anime on my top anime list and is now number one...my friend told me to watch it and i saw the op and was like "ew..." but im glad i eventually came back and watched it! I cried so much and I love how it all ties together at ep 10, then you can re watch the series to understand homura more. beautiful.
yeah the opening and the first two episodes trolled everyone hard and then you get to like episode 3 where the mami scene happens and then that wakes everyone up to what this show is actually like and was going to be totally different to what was seen before and then it's just a rollercoaster ride from then on where everything goes downhill for the characters but makes for a really good show.
You guys were trolled by the first two episodes? Let me teach you a basic rule of ANY MEDIA EVER. Whenever you hear the word "contract," run. Run away as far as you can. And then Mami showed them the SOUL Gem and I was like "yep, Kyubey's evil."
I kinda had a deep brain, which i knew at one point in any of the episodes was going to reveal the true nature. The two episodes where nust a warning. Enjoyed the entire season, worth my time
Okay, I love this song and I ADORE Madoka Magica. It has an amazing story, great animation and wonderful characters. But I hate it when people say that its the first dark Magical Girl anime. Did everyone forget about a certain little anime called Revolutionary Girl Utena? Or if that doesn't count, then Princess Tutu? Even some of the light MGs had dark moments. Sailor Moon was full of them. In one episode, the senshi were crucified! Even PRETTY CURE had dark moments. Have you SEEN Heartcatch? A mascot DIED and the girl who he belonged to fell into deep despair. Ojamajo Doremi, which is a cute witch anime, tackled subjects like divorce, trauma, miscarriage and even had a young girl DIE of CANCER! And she was much younger than the Madoka cast. So yeah, Madoka Magica is an amazing anime, but it is NOT the first dark Mahou Shoujo.
It's all about overcoming adversaries with a sense of humor. Why should only muscular guys get to battle those things? Show us what they're made of... that's the idea of these episodes.
THANK. YOU. Madoka Magica, in my own belief, got popular because it was marketed as a kid show, and doesn't seem dark at first glance. At least it isn't Magical Girl Site-
People say it it's dark because it is the first magical girl anime which is... actually dark. I never watched an anime made me feel like dark. Some other "dark" animes made me feel kinda empathic, sad and wierd. PMMM was just... smartly written and confusing your feelings mysteriously in labyrinth scenes, in the episode when Sayaka died, in episode 10 when Homura felt like she gave up but she didn't and tried keep going even how hopeless it was and in The Rebellion movie.
I love that this is basically a Homura character song-the lyrics are so good. T-T Here's my translation: Someday the light of love Burning in your eyes will transcend time And surely only bring destruction to This dream of a world hurrying toward ruin Swallow up your hesitation What is it that you wish for? Is there some fleeting future that would Fulfill this greedy yearning? Like the ancient magic I saw in my childhood dreams With a power that shatters even darkness I want to reach your smiling face Clutched within these frightened hands Is the courage of lost innocence* My aspiration is all that I can rely on A wish That calls out to wake that light Someday you too will desire that power For someone else's sake One night, when your heart is seized by love Those nebulous words will emerge If I can proceed unwaveringly It’s fine if my heart breaks I want a spell to fight against The tragedy that’s Always before my eyes You, a still-dreaming memory Me, a sleepless tomorrow I will continue on to fight toward The miracle of our meeting Clutched within these frightened hands Is the blade of lost innocence* My aspiration is all that I live for A wish Brandished by my heart That shining time of captured sunlight When I loved that book about Wonderland I used to believe in those fairytales That tell us dreams always come true (Within the light and the shadow) Quietly disturbed from blooming The ancient magic gently whispers That the power to change the world Is in your hands Let’s live in an unending dream Of the time I’ll spend with you My aspiration is all that I live for To build that life Is my wish *Lit. “of a plucked flower,” but the significance is less clear in English when directly translated Translation is more of an art than a science, so my interpretation might differ slightly from others. Enjoy!
A word of advice for anyone who wants to watch Madoka Magica: If you are prone to panic attacks and anxiety, I would not recommend watching it because once it gets to the third episode it gets freaky and messed up and it may trigger panic attacks. Just a fair warning. If you are not prone to panic attacks and anxiety, I STILL recommend slight caution when watching and possibly a box of tissues for all of the tears you will shed. ~enjoy~ p.s. If a little alien cat thing comes up to you and asks you to make a contract, do. NOT. say. yes. if you value your life in any way whatsoever. If you do, however, say yes, I BEG of you not to make your wish "I want to go to Disneyland" or I will bash my head against the wall until it falls off and I bleed out like Mami
From innocent to guilty, this is my taste. Steins;Gate, Madoka Magica, When They Cry, and Re:Zero are the best first warning episode to the real beginning!
Oh yeah, they absolutely are. In a bit of brilliance the visual cues to make you initially think it's from Madoka's perspective, and it's not until things really start revealing themselves that the reality of it comes into focus.
well, madoca might be the center of the story, but homura and her actions are the driving force while madoka is almost a mcguffin for most of the plot making in the end homura the main character.
''This is horrible!'' was what madoka said when this music played. then she fell to despair and destroyed the world in 10 days after turning. its official, haters are the bain of everyone's existance.
3:35 This part is so beautiful because of the interplay between the two vocal lines - Keiko’s epic and cool lead and the specific harmony lines answering her. Still the thing I look for most in the song.
Please, someone agree with me, but this song IS Madoka's Magica. It fits absolutely perfectly, lyrically and instrumentally. It has its dark, heavy and slow crawling rhythm. The melody isn't that complex but its simplicity with a lot of different voices/instruments sounding perfect together making it bigger and wider turning it complex. And the lyrics... Oh my... Words cannot describe it. And yes, the voice-trio which's not high, maintaining a middle range almost all time, singing in triads with a powerful voice yet sometimes soft. This song IS Madoka's Magica.
Remember dear scaredy cat, when you spot baddass anime theme like this, no matter how sweet the art style is, run for your life. If they didn't joking on making this kind of music, imagine the original story
i love the whole song, but the percussion in the beginning before the lyrics start is my favorite bit. if "Connect" demonstrates what _Madoka Magica_ look like on the surface, then this exemplifies what it really is
My younger brother is into the epic-battle type animes that aren't so emotionally heavy (Dragon Ball Z stuff). My older brother likes magical-themed animes and light-hearted stories. The endless streams of strawberries that were launched at me after the third episode of this anime was totally fucking worth it.
I personally feel Keiko should bring out this wig a few more times. I LOVE her long hair to DEATH. HOWEVER, she did this with that long coat and shoulder pads, and those red gloves (best outfit of the three, deny me if you want)? I was awestruck. What would be really pretty is if she wore this wig with a black rose/tophat fascinator (spelling?) and full, true gothic Lolita (or Shiro Lolita). (Contrary to popular belief, almost none of Kalafina's outfits are actual Lolita fashion.)
Yeah actually it's pretty obvious that they aren't wearing lolita, I don't know why people think it is. Lolita= people like Mana (weird thing he's a guy) or Kanon Wakeshima
I just realized that Homura's world is an opportunity. I hope in Homura's world, the girls get a chance to actually solve their own problems. Talk about them. Put them behind. Not...sacrifice their lives because they can't handle it anymore but they don't want to hurt people. P.S: I'm starting to understand the mindset behind the theory saying Madoka was actually planning to take her own life for a time now, and becoming a Goddess simply presented itself as an opportunity to do it and still be useful.
***** The means to launch a nuke? Well, the Davy Crockett launcher is man portable and fires tactical nukes. I wonder if Homura could use her time powers to have long enough to learn how to use one and build a working warhead?
DGneoseeker1 To be fair she kinda doesn't care about much apart from Madoka (See Rebellion movie) so I don't think she'd have qualms nuking the whole city (Whole Japan maybe? xD) with Walpurgis and just escaping with Madoka :P.
menpower1 I could see Homura nuking a city to save Madoka. She didn't really care about much other than Madoka by the time it was the timeline in the show.
