Program Theme of the 47th Annual Kalamazoo Living History Show™
One if by Land, Two if by Sea?
These words were penned by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his poem “Paul Revere's Ride” to describe the signal used to guide the “midnight ride of Paul Revere” at the start of the Revolutionary War. We all remember the poem- Paul Revere arranged to have a signal lit in the Old North Church - one lantern if the British were coming by land and two lanterns if they were coming by sea - and began to make preparations for his ride to alert the local militias and citizens about the impending attack. This was the fastest means of communication during that time.
Methods of communication have changed greatly, and the living history, historical site, and museum communities are beginning to recognize the great usefulness of technology and social media to educate, promote, and recruit. It is harder and harder to connect and communicate by older, traditional methods such as flyers or brochures, as a new generation of history enthusiasts looks to connect with history through ways with which they are more familiar- social media. These newer methods of communication, such as podcasts, Instagram, Facebook, RU-vid, and Tick Tock, are helping educate, recruit, and spread the word to a whole new generation. Join us for the 47th annual Kalamazoo Living History Show as we meet some of the people successfully using video technology, social media, and other modern methods of communication to build a wider, more multi-generational audience for historical interpretation and communication. Ways to revitalize our hobby/sport/ lifestyle and assure its survival into the future will be discussed.

Myself, my wife Cortney, and my sister Rose made it to the show - only an 8-hour drive (one way). My sister had some concerns regarding what the show might have for her - and she ended up buying a knife kit, knife handle scales, pewter buttons, a knitted blanket, and an oil-tanned deer skin. I met Dick Miller and talked to him about finishing rifles - he was super helpful. All the vendors were friendly and were quick to share information regarding their craft. Thank you for detailing the various shows. I am planning on heading east for some of the larger shows. Thanks again

Awesome event! The traditional wooden boat community and the reeinacting/ muzzleloading community need to have some splices here and there. Its all living history and the timeframes match.

When I first heard about it, I told my wife I wanted to go. She didn't seem excited at first, but after making me some muzzleloading kit, she booked the hotel, boarded the dogs, and put together some Charcuterie for the trip. It was great fun

I could have sworn I seen this during the day sometime today before it came to my notifications but I was eager to see it again and drool like I said before. Why don't you make a powder measure out of that finger oh, that would be a novelty. Thanks for the video I enjoyed watching this a second time just as much as the first time

Do they have any similar shows in the southeast? I used to have a Carolina wren that would sit on my back porch and sing. You could hear him in the house like he was in there with you. Cool little guy.

There is a nice one in Knoxville, TN each year towards the spring. There is a lot of history in the south, but I'm not sure how many shows like this there are.

Safety question. Is it safe to replace a nipple on a rifle that is designed for #10 caps with a musket cap nipple? I have thousands of musket caps but cannot find #10 caps. On my .54 caliber rifle, using patched round balls, musket caps and 60 grains of FF powder, after firing, the hammer was pushed back into the half cock position due to the backpressure once out of every 10 shots. On my .32 caliber rifle using patched round balls and 25 grains of FFF, using musket caps, the hammer was pushed back into the half cock position due to the backpressure once out of every five shots. Neither gun will do this when using Remington #10 caps. Both guns are new Pedersoli and are very accurate at 50 yards with either nipple installed. The hole in both musket nipples used looked to be of a normal diameter and were in new never used condition.
@ILoveMuzzleloading
@ILoveMuzzleloading Год назад
I've heard of many folks replacing nipples to accomodate the caps they have available. As long as you are doing so in a safe manner with safe powder charges, I would think you would be fine, but it's always good to check with a local club and get a second opinion.

Hello Ethan I sure enjoyed our brief time together at zoo. I do have a question. I’m not satisfied with the sights on my crocket 32. Is there a resource where I can find examples of front and rear sight on traditional muzzle loaders. My 32 is for plinking and small game hunting. Again, nice to meet you in person after all this time following your channel.
@ILoveMuzzleloading
@ILoveMuzzleloading Год назад
Thanks Rick! It was great to meet you. Apart from some of the Kindig and other longrifle books, check out some of the auction house websites. They have a back catalog of original muzzleloaders with great pictures to give you some reference. Search "Percussion Rifle" or "cap and ball rifle" in their search boxes to get to the right stuff. Sometimes they categorize them weirdly.

It’s honorable that they young women were willing to have a reasonable discussion, but their ignorance of the world is painfully obvious. Schools aren’t actually educating young people anymore.
