Let's explore Kaliningrad Oblast, the westernmost region of Russia that used to be part of Germany. How has it changed since it became Russia?
We're going to visit small towns on the Baltic Sea and deep in the region: Zelenogradsk, Svetlogorsk, Sovetsk, Baltyysk, Pravdinsk, Yantarnyy. Also visit the Curonian spit and Vistula spit.
And talk to Russian people who live here.
Amber mine pit, surfing and so much more

From NJ USA. I spent the past several hours going through your videos. Your photography is excellent, especially the drone shots. Mostly, I'm impressed with the way you tell the story of your country and your people. I have had a uninformed belief about Russia and the people. Your country is beautiful and your people are very interesting. Russians have always appeared to me to be angry and unfriendly. But through your eyes I now know they are just cautious, if not pessimistic, for reasons that go back generations. Thank you. And I get a kick out of your southern accent.

I'm from the USA, and have been all around Lithuania, visiting areas where my ancestors came from, and especially loved the Couronian Spit. Because I lacked a visa, I could not cross into the Russian territory. Though I was very much aware that Kaliningrad existed, I never knew of its rich culture and old German charm! Thanks to your lively video, I want to travel to Kaliningrad Oblast next time.

Slava, I like the new titles like you used for the city names. The end when you get an excellent summary from the Babushka is a lot of fun. You're a natural film maker, you offer opinion and also show things as is while telling a story. You're one of the best soft power projections of Russia.

Excellent videos of East Prussia and Königsberg. I always dreamed about to visit. Now it's possible, but I am too old (79 yrs). I had a good friend here in Australia from Tilsit. She passed away some years ago. She always was so homesick for her home town Tilsit. She had to flee the city in 1945 when she was only 16 yrs old. Too sad she never could go back for a visit. In Germany you can still buy Tilsiter Käse, a cheese famous from that town.

Really enjoyed watching this video as well. For us Americans this video matches our ideas of what Russia is like. The older ladies for the most part have an unique look that I don't think one can find anywhere else. You mom could pass for an European or an American but not the ladies in this video. The bicycle rentals I thought of being expensive. The meal costs are unbelievably low. That fish looked very appetizing and it would have cost you way more around the US. I was impressed that you were in the water bare feet. Even in the pics it look really cold. The dancing tree park was awesome. Another excellent video!!

I’ve really enjoyed your visit to this region. The best parts are your visits with the locals. Russians are so warm and friendly. I’ve traveled all over Western Europe. The only place I’ve encountered this type of warmth has been in parts of England/Scotland and maybe in Belgium. I just love the people. The guy from Kazakhstan, the lady with the pink kitchen, the apple lady and the babushka on the beach ... I want to meet them all and be their friend. The food looked fantastic. I was shocked at the disparity in wealth between the resort towns and those in the interior. I hope the economy improves. I was also shocked to learn about that weed that can burn and blind you. It looked pretty. Thank you for making these wonderful videos. You are the bridge between your country and the world.

This is a great, informative and enjoyable channel and you deal with historical events very sensitively. I accept without question that the city is now Russian and I wish the inhabitants well, but for centuries it was German and for a time after the conquest the name in Russian was just a transliteration into Cyrillic of Königsberg (Кёнигсберг). It would be an honour to the truths of history to allow the name (and maybe the name of the whole region) to revert to their former names: Mikhail Kalinin was no angel, an ineffectual head of state, and co-signed the death warrants in the Katyn Massacre. He deserves no honour. In 1986 I visited Leningrad and Kalinin: today I would be visiting St Petersburg and Tver. Deeply satisfying historically. I wish the same for Kaliningrad.

very nice and interesting video. I visited Kaliningrad and Svetlogorsk and Zelenogradsk in 2012. It seems a lot has changed. I still miss out on going to Tilsit and Insterburg aerea where my family derives from. My dad was born in Königsberg and never had the chance to visit the city again... i did on his behalf. It was a weird experience to compare old photos with the current look. Only my greatgrandfathers house in a Kaliningrad suburb looks like nothing has ever happened... Hopefully travelling will be much easier in the future for EU citizins... it was so complicated to go there. I was actually in Lithuania and Poland this summer and on 7 occassion I had "a look" into the oblast. One from the other side of the Neman on Tilsit and one on the Curonian Split... sigh.. i wish i could have simply crossed the bridge.. but maybe next year

ABSOLUTELY LOVED this video. Amazing! You have a great gift and and talent for story-telling. It was so good to see the wonderful places that I have visited many times in the Oblast of Kaliningrad.....Curonian Spit, the Dancing Forest, Sovietsk and of course my favourite Zelenogradsk. I really hope many westerners will see that this is a part of Russia that is very easy to visit as a tourist. The people and the place are wonderful. I have had many conversations on the beach in Zelenogradsk with strangers that have become instant friends. Many western people have lost the ability to talk to strangers. This is one of the many reasons I love the people of Russia, they are real and honest - sat it like it is. I was born and raised in Australia before moving to the USA a few years ago. I would say Russians are very similar to Australians, so if you like Australians, you'll like Russians! Great job Slava (I think that is your name, sorry if I'm wrong). :)

To many of us , we always thought of Russia as being very cold, no beaches. Lovely to see the beaches. I have always lived near the ocean. Nothing like a sandy beach, warm salt air and a fancy drink (or wine ) to enjoy the day people watching. This part of Russia is very inviting.. I am so happy to have found your channel. The government should pay you to promote your country with these video brochures. One thing I do notice that is positive, but it may be that it isn't busy season, but not too commercialized and not crowded. Beaches where I'm from usually very crowded in summer, late spring into early fall.

Hello. I really enjoyed both the tour and scenery of this video. I personally lived in Germany for five years, and those cities that had German heritages felt very similar to my surroundings there. I was surprised of the uneven economic growth of the area. Here in USA (I know improper comparison) resort areas lifts surrounding economies at least to some extent. As you say, tradition may hold some of the areas back or maybe the distances among the cities and towns. I appreciate your time and energy that you put into these videos. I would never have the time or energy to visit all of these locations by myself. Cheers.

Thanks for another one of your great tours. I always look forward to seeing and hearing from you. I love how you interview the locals. This makes the experience so much better and memorable. It is so valuable that you make the places you visit more than sites, it is about people. Love you two. Sray safe and healthy.

I knew that there was of course a lot of German history in Kaliningrad but I had no idea that Friedland, Eylau, and Tilsit, all places with Napoleonic connotations, were also here. With so much history and ambitious and engaging people like yourselves to tell it I am sure there is a bright future for the region. As always thank you and keep 'em coming!

Kaliningrad by the way 2 times became the territory of Russia as a result of world war 2, the first time East Prussia was ceded to Russia under the Empress Elizabeth, during the war with Frederick of Prussia, and in 1758 Emanuel Kant even swore allegiance to the Russian Empire

Another informative and interesting video for my Monday morning waking up to the week! I follow your travels on a map as you go. You have a good way with people to get them to chat, sure, some people don't want to be disturbed or open up but even so, you show respect. I guess fishermen go fishing to be alone, though. Scary to see so much hogweed. I'm familiar with it as I live in the area that the Genesis song, 'Return of the Giant Hogweed' , was inspired by. I had to dig it out of my garden.. We have more of the Lesser Hogweed that is invading our countryside nowadays, it still gives skin blisters although it can be eaten in certain ways. How old was your mum when she had you??!! It's so sad that centuries of politics has caused prejudiced between nations and a host of other negative things. My mother thinks that Russians are nasty based on propaganda over the years but my experience is that Russian people that I know are far nicer, funnier, politer and respectful than many of my countries supposed allies are! Many Blessings to you!

thank you. Exactly. This hogweed spread is becoming a big problem in Russia. In my region there's still very little but the further west you go the worse it gets

Thanks again for presenting a Russia we never see here with Australian media. Mind you the last time Putin was in Australia (Brisbane G20) some journalist asked him what he thinks of Australia. Putin's answer was " I don't think of Australia". Nice to see you try surfing. I live on coast here and many people surf, it is very similar wave wise here to California - same setups and size.

I think Slava should make a list of sentences likes "Yes, I spent a year in Tennessee, " "Been there for year in smoky mountain" etc...so that he can directly copypaste on frequently asked questions

Excellent video, Slava! Every second of it was fun and informative. This is what you were meant to do. Biggest surprises about Kaliningrad: #1 It looks German but really is Russian. #2 A bra is actually a kind of bikini top. #3 NOT a surprise...Lena is a really attractive woman. She has a very natural elegance.
