After Ashwatthama attacked Uttara's womb, the baby basically died. When she gave birth to that baby several months later, in the palace of Hastinapur, it turned out to be a still born. But then, Krishna took it into his arms, taking a vow that if he had adhered to his Dharma throughout his life, never lied etc etc., the baby must live. And so, it came back to life, named 'Parikshit' because of its test of death while still in his mother's womb.
