My Big Joe Classic III was delivered last week. Watching your amazing videos, made setting it up and my first cook a breeze. Will definitely be watching all your old and new vids for recipes and ideas. Keep up the awesome work!
I have only recently discovered your channel. Your videos are very informative and super entertaining. You are a natural and I love listening to you talk, it's very calming! (haha!). In my quest to find my first kamado, you have pulled me over to the Kamado Joe team. So Kamado Joe has made a great investment with sending you that Big Joe 3 as i'm sure i'm not the only one! Thanks a lot for your videos, looking forward to the ones that are coming. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Thanks for the fantastic video on setting up the big Joe. I finished mine about 2 hours ago, nearly a 400degs… and about to shut it up for the night! And thanks to your advice I went for the Big Joe straight off! Thanks for all your dedication to helping the Kamado Joe community!
@@SmokingDadBBQ Has it’s rain coat in at the moment and needs a clean out! The best bbq I’ve ever had, huge difference from propane and briquettes… still can’t convince the wife to install it in the kitchen 🤣
Been watching your channel for awhile and finally picked up a Big Joe III this past Friday. Used all your recommendations from this video to assembled, went flawlessly!! Love your content, thanks James!!
Thanks for showing the unboxing James. I just got a classic 2 last week and your review on Kamodo Joe vs The Big Green Egg made the decision easy to buy a Joe. Hope you enjoy the first meal off the Big Joe!
Firstly, I love your videos -- thanks for all your great advice. I pick up my Big Joe this week & the main thing I wanted to see was how you & friends lifted the Big Joe shell into the cart, via the 2 recommended lift points. This is the one thing you didn't show, although I really needed to watch that -- why?? At least you said you had 3 of you, so that will have to do this time. Thanks again!
Thanks for this video, you deserve that big Joe! Im in the UK and love watching your videos. Its made me go out and buy a classic 3. Its getting delivered on Thursday and i can't wait!
Congrats on your new toy. Got mine about 4 months ago from Ceramic Grill Store in Texas. I live in California. Free shipping, NO sales tax and free BJ Expander (Retail $89.00) which almost doubles the grilling area. Had 2 buddies help me assemble/move it and I was still scared Shi@$&less. First cook was Tri tip which came out excellent. Then on to shrimp & chicken stir fry, ribs, smash burgers, London broil, wings and now pizza which I still need practice on. Not quite there yet. Keep up the good work, love your channel.
Hi James I followed all your tips especially putting the paper behind the ceramic plates to help with the ring, will the paper burn away after a super high heat cook?
I think you should do a couple BIG briskets and invite all of your viewers to taste test them! I mean, after all, if it wasn't for us, you wouldn't have a free Big Joe III ! ; ) EDIT: I forgot to mention that watching your videos is what convinced me to get a Kamado Joe! When I saw what was included with the KJs vs. BGE it was a no-brainer. AND, Kamado Joe seems to be more innovative and always seeking improvements. I really like and appreciate that. Congratulations on your Big Joe. I think it was well deserved.
New to Big Joe, Vision kamado was awesome!! For the price BJ has let me down on the cheap venting system which cuts its efficiency greatly! Hope they make improvements! Love the large area of cooking space.
Congratulations on new toy. I just started playing with mine ( classic 2 ). Must warn viewers: The edge of the lower air vent is SHARP ! I cut my fingers lifting it into position
At first I was 100%sure go for the classic 3. But now it hit me... A big joe 3 is coming too ur garden verry soon. Can't wait to start with it 🤤🤤🤤🤤. Subscription is done for you channel . greetings from Belgium
Congratulations on the new grill. I wonder how many you have sold for the company. Maybe they should have paid you to take it! What I enjoy about your videos is the easy way you come across. Your passion for cooking on the Joe certainly comes through. Cheers Russ from Ottawa.
Smoking Dad BBQ - Thank you and congrats to you as well. Your videos were the main reason I went with this over the big green egg! Did I hear you correctly in the video. You’ve had 2 other Classic iii’s ? Why so many?
Thanks for the video! It made setting up my Big Joe III a breeze! Unfortunately you can't buy the Grill Gun in Australia (looks too much like a real gun) but I found an industrial blow torch! I've never lit a BBQ so fast before!! Great work! Thanks!!
Ouch! Never lift these bad boys by the shelf brackets. I’ve seen that method dislodge the retention bands ringing the grill. Best to use the bottom of the hinge and the front lower opening 😮.
I like and appreciate your hints and tips for assembly, they are noted for when my Classic III arrives... 👍 Shame, because it’s great weather here in Epping Forest, UK, today - ideal for BBQ
So incredibly jealous, can't wait for mine! Congrats. Always wondered if smoking a brisket and pork shoulder simultaneously would work out on a big joe. If you think it would, I'd love to see that!
My classic iii just showed up. Took me about 45 minutes to unbox and build. This video helped a lot as the directions in the box are not exactly great. I love how they don’t include directions on how to assemble the sloroller insert....
did you get it figured out? right on the firebox with the notches oriented north, east, south west then install the divide and conquer rack into those notches. add the black ring and then the black plate on top. then add your cooking grids
Awesome! Congrats on installing the grill and the first burn. Would be interested in plans/designs for the table as I’m putting together something similar after I use it for a few months; thinking about integrating a yeti cooler which would be good for resting when low and slow and libations when entertaining.
Nice one James. Well deserved. Your videos got me into a Kamado Classic 3 as I’m sure many others did - so the reality is you have been selling grills for Kamado. In other words - well deserved mate - a free Big Joe is smart of them to give you. First cook????? Hmmmm. Slow cooked Cuban style pork shoulder???
Same here, these videos pushed me over the edge on getting the Classic 3 which I am still patiently waiting for. Originally thought end of this month but wondering if it might be August now...
You did mention whether or not the X-Ring Accessory & Heat Deflector Shields were included or had to be ordered although you did state they were accessories. We’re there any other parts that had to be ordered as accessories that weren’t included in the original shipment? BTW, GREAT vid. SUBSCRIBED!!
thanks so much, the series 3 Joe comes with the SloRoller, two deflectors, the cart & side shelves (unless you order the stand alone), the cooking grids, the ash tool, grid grippers, charcoal basket and basket divider etc. optional accessories not needed to get started are things like the JoeTisserie or soapstone etc.
My Big Joe 3 arrived yesterday. Got a good deal on a floor stock BJ3 I think Covid has really hurt the stock numbers in Australia. But I still followed your setup and noticed the person that did it originally made a mistake!. So thanks again!. Will do the burn over night. How long did your break in burn take?
Hello James, With all my respect but i don’t think you know right now the possibilities of the the big joe. I have learned a lot of your movies about the Kamado Joe. To be honest it was my my reason to choose the Kamado Joe over the Big bastard (You probably don’t know the company but they make great Ceramic BBQ’s) . I have bought a Kamado Joe Classic III. Good enough for 8 persons they say but if your like BBQ you want to make vegetables and potato’s on the BBQ. If I have a diner for 6 persons and I want a nice piece of meat and 2 kind of vegetables and potato’s the divide an concour system is great but I need more space!!!! Try 2 zones direct and indirect. Make 6 steaks (revearse sear) and grilled courgettes and some potato’s enough for 6 persons. ( I make 2 kind courgettes one rolls with pecorino cheese and one in slicess with see-salt and peper). So my request is: Please give some more attention to the possibilities of vegetables on the BBQ. I like you to make a dinner with meat, vegetables and potato’s on the same BBQ. You can do it!!!!!
My Classic II has been in the box in my garage for about 2 months waiting for my pavilion to be built so I will be setting it up this Thursday, my very first grill EVER so I’m very new to all of this but I’ve been enjoying your videos, learning and picking up ideas. That first burn, is it overnight or about an hour or two would work? I’m nervous leaving a fire overnight (again, I’m a newbie) 😅
That is awesome and congratulations. an hour or so at 400f is plenty. then leave it sealed up closed for 24 hours snd then you are good to go. once the fire is out moving forward, leave the dome unlatched when not in use
Nice set up James. Was wondering if you use covers on your Joe's or do you leave them exposed to rain and the sun. I currently cover mine but would much rather see them when not in use rather than a cover.
Hey I just got a big joe iii ... I've had to do a few things to the latch... but mine doesn't latch over by just pushing it down is there something I need to do??
the latch can move left and right and up and down with the allen screw on it... the 4 nuts for left to right.... might need to tweak it so it line-up perfectly
Are you having any issues with bug joe. Specifically, a guy on RU-vid (idlehands) had the issue of the back of the gasket on the lid rubbing with the grate when the slow roller was on and he used the accessory to prop up the food (high position grill grate). I’m now in the fence of buying one of these...
No issues. But if you install your firebox not in the centre you get this issue. This sounds like a user error with assembly vs a product defect ... moving the firebox will fix how the SloRoller sits so that it doesn’t interfere with the gasket
Hi James, I’ve watched this video and your more recent unboxing and set up of the classic 3. I received a big joe 3 and it’s currently in my garage but needs to go on our back deck (out around the garage and up 3 stairs). I know you used 3 guys to move yours did you have yourself grabbing on the front ash compartment and then the other two guys just grabbing on to the back hinge? I have seen some posts where the hinge breaks off and I wanted to get your opinion about moving it in that way for maybe 50-75 feet. Thanks in advance.
thanks so much. I have heard some horror stories. I have had two Joe’s with lose bands from the factory (out of about 8 assembled this year)so I suspect they were lifted with maybe bands that needed to be tightened. I would tighten it and go from there. you could put in the cart to wheel it closer
Hi James, I ordered and finally received a Kamado Joe Classic 3 and at the same time I ordered some KJ big block. I carried out your suggestion of a ‘burn in’ and then tried my first cook which I found to have a chemical smell and flavour to it. Of course my first thought was that the burn in was not adequate so I decided to do another burn in at high temperature over 7 hours but using another brand of coal and the smell from my Joe disappeared. However, on my second cook with the KJ big block, the chemical smell and flavour returned! Am I doing something wrong?
@@SmokingDadBBQ You were right, I wasn’t waiting long enough. I obviously needed more practise. Btw, I tried your hot and fast ribs yesterday and absolutely nailed it! 😁 thank you. I’m planning to make smash burgers on my soapstone and I have some questions: Do I need to support my soapstone when applying downward pressure onto it (I’m concerned that it will shatter)? If so, how do I support it? How do I clean my soapstone after use (I don’t want to do a deep clean after every use)?
James - as others, I'm loving your videos. I'm in market for Kamado Joe Classic 2 or 3 and had a not so good experience with Home Depot delivering another Kamado Joe Classic 1. Who would you suggest I order from local or online delivery? I would like grill delivered to my porch and I can get to my back deck or even better delivered assembled and put on deck. Local company as Ace Hardware will assemble at their store and deliver to my house - worry about how they assemble a bit. I'm a stickler for things being right. Thoughts?
The grill is not difficult to assemble so I would prefer it delivered in its safe box vs. the risk of damage being assembled. Atlanta grill store and All things bbq deliver grills from online in the US, Dicksons BBQ does in Canada. I would check them out to see if you can coordinate its final landing place in your yard
@@SmokingDadBBQ James - thank you very much for prompt reply. I totally agree about receiving grill in safe box. I live in Atlanta, GA which I should have noted and calling Atlanta Grill today. Any reason I should not to choose the Classic II over the Classic III? I believe the major difference is the slow roller. Placed order with Atlanta Grill Co....order should arrive tomorrow.
Where are you? I know a dealer that a week or so ago was offering some savings and some free accessories like a cover... this was in Ontario, Canada. Otherwise dealers, costco roadshow and KJ direct does things like Black Friday etc. for occasional sales
@@danbailey6023 I have no problem rolling the BJ around by myself. But it did take 3 dudes to lift that thing on the cart...no plumbers cracks though LOLOL
Congrats James! Well deserving of the Big Joe, welcome to the BJ family! Thanks to Kamado for hooking you up. It only makes sense to pull out the probes and do a low and slow brisket, or multiple racks of ribs for the maiden voyage. Question: Did you have any top alignment issues on the BJ? In my BJ the left of the top is aligned pretty well, the right side is off by 1/8-1/4 inch. Wondering if you had to adjust and how you did it. I also need to tweak the gas shock, it is not supporting the top weight in all situations. Interested to hear your feedback. Congrats again, keep up the great work!
Thanks so much, I did have some new issues out of the box that I have not had before (the lid being really hard to latch). My bands were very lose and needed to be tightened, and the dome latch wasn't aligned. There is a small allan wrench in the latch that moves the latch up and down, and there are nuts on the left and right that allow you to move the latch side to side. I adjusted all of these so that they were straight and removed some of the tension on the rear spring which was over tight and it works as it should now
@@SmokingDadBBQ I just discovered your channel during my research on whether to buy any kind of KJ and I really love how well you explain things. Also great job with filming and production quality! I would love to see a see where you show what are the different parts that can be adjusted and how exactly to make these kind of adjustments so you have the perfect alignment. I think I will be purchasing a new BJ3 soon and would love to have a video showing exactly how you did this. PS. I love how you added the chapter timestamps to the description however it did not activate the new RU-vid chapters feature because YT is stupid and requires you to add the first timestamp to be 00:00. If you can edit this video description and future ones to have the silly initial 00:00 that would be really nice. support.google.com/youtube/answer/9884579?hl=en
Thank you very much for the detailed description! I was able to do the install with my dad in less than an hour. The tissue trick made alignment of the petals really easy. I now also have an Ash collector left over :)
Used the toilet paper trick when assembling my Big Joe 3. Just did a first burn slightly exceeding 600 degrees fahrenheit, but it seems I'm stuck with toilet paper in my Kamado. The color has gone slightly darker, but no sign of burning away. What am I doing wrong?
James. I am moving and will have to move my KJ Big Joe 2. I am a little anxious about it. Just moving across town, so 16 mile distance. Any suggestions on best way to do this? I expect to remove all internals to make it lighter, easier. But should I remove the dome from the base? Currently my Joe is in a roller assembly and moves easily. Wondering if I should leave dome and base together, internals removed, and wheel onto a pull behind trailer and use tie downs? Should I close securely or leave top and bottom open and pad with something? Pls, any suggestions appreciated. Edgar Smith
Noooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh Now I have envy !!!!!!!!!! 😂🤣😂☺️😂☺️😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I liked my tie fighter - but oh man ! A superstar destroyer !!!! A tractor beam of 'need' is drawing me to the online shop !!!!! Whatever you cook - cook lots of it ! I'm leaving now & will have 14 days in quarantine when I arrive !!
First. thanks for your videos. Very informative and helpful. You make it all accessible and I apprecIate that. I own a large BGE for many years. I have a vacation home now and I want to purchase a Kamado Joe for use there. I am trying to decide between classic III size and big joe series III. Does the Big Joe perform as well at low and high temps as the classic size? Reason for thinking I want the larger size is b/c it will fit a Packard brisket for sure and great when I have the whole family over. Thoughts?
Appreciate the video! For the cart, should there be 2 washers per bolt or 1 washer per bolt? Manual shows 2 but I don't know if the washers I received are just stuck together...
Hi there, have you seen this video about the issue with the gasket toward the back of the Big Joe III, Have you seen this issue with your grill of is this just an issue with this guy's grill? Go to the 15:40 mark in this video for an explanation ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-63dr0k_q4PM.html . Thanks!!!
Just want to say thank you...I purchased a home in LA... spent 5 years saving for it....and all I wanted to do once I made all the home major repairs..was to get a great pit...you have consistently given me information and inspiration...for my 40th I finally made the purchase for a big joe 3...put it together thanks to you...and did my break in burn..thanks to you....I am super excited and can't wait to conquer the flame with a komato joe
I saw this video went you first posted it... Very proud for you. Just so you realize HOW fortunate you are... I purchased my Big Joe 3 on June 6th. I'm still waiting for it.
Looks great, maybe throw on some ribs or a brisket to break it in on the first cook.. Definitely cook something you have done several times before on the classic 3 for comparison sake.
Nice one, I get my joe classic II on Monday and glad I watched this for those few extra tips. After first burn i think i will take it easy and go for breakfast for the family.
Just assembled my classic and could not seat the firebox pedestals in the correct position no matter how I tried even using the toilet paper technique. On examination I found the castings were very poorly finished, they were so rough that they would not sit correctly together or on the base. It took 20 minutes of sanding edges to eventually get them to sit as the ones in your video. Not sure if anyone else has had this. I don't expect airtight precision but the ring would even not come close to locking in until they were sanded. Disappointing considering the cost it was just poor Q.A.
Hi...I just got a KJ Big Joe 2...did you post a video on setup and first time using it? If so, please send me the link....I love your videos and now hope to learn a lot to apply your info to my cooking. Thanks
Hey, my wheel kit vs assembly instructions don’t make sense. The instructions say there are washers but the wheel kit is without any… any ideas? Cheers! TOM
The washers are in a little bag with the tools to assemble. The instructions say 2 washers per wheel but they are glued together already so it's really one washer.
Thaniks, I just received the Big Joe III today and set it up. I'm1 tired and we did need Three guys to lift that Bad Boy into the stand. Now to fire it UP. Yea!
they dont give me any inside info... the company has 3 generations in 13 years so its not like smart phones when a new one comes on a predictable schedule. i'd struggle to imagine what features could justify a 4th gen
Any chance the tissue can cause uneven heat distribution and crack the outside ceramic? Awesome video, the iii looks huge lol, fit both kids in the there haha
