The Kamakhya Temple is one of the oldest and most important Shakti Peethas, where the yoni (female genitalia) of the goddess Sati fell. According to Hindu mythology, Sati, the consort of Lord Shiva, immolated herself after her father, Daksha, insulted Shiva. In grief and rage, Shiva carried her charred body across the universe, and parts of her body fell at various locations, which became sacred sites known as Shakti Peethas. Kamakhya is believed to be the site where Sati's yoni fell, symbolizing female power and fertility.
