Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden has picked Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his running mate, making her the first African American vice-presidential candidate in U.S. history.
Harris had positioned herself during the primary campaign as a reformer who has tirelessly worked to correct the abuses of the criminal justice system, and she confronted Biden in the debates about his atrocious record on race and law-and-order policies.
Biden will rely on Harris to energize the ticket and win over the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. The irony of Biden's decision, particularly in the wake of widespread protests against police misconduct and racial injustice, is that Harris has her own troubling record on criminal justice issues.
Like Biden, Harris deserves credit for endorsing vital reforms even at this stage in her career, but it's worth setting the record straight about her priorities over the course of her 16 years in public life, before criminal justice reform became front and center for the Democratic Party.
Harris' record is that of a 1980s-style drug warrior, a defender of dirty prosecutors, and a political opportunist who made life more dangerous for sex workers.

What a childish thing to say. call Harris was probably one of the smartest prosecutors/lawyers and the work of law-enforcement and San Francisco Bay. she engaged a number of people out of the community to help her try diversion programs to keep young kids., teenagers and young adults out of the prison system. Same thing when she was Attorney General, and trying to figure out ways to keep first timers out of prison. the lies told about her now are for people who did not want to see her as President of the United States for likely racist reasons, or perhaps misogyny on their part. But you can be assured it was never because she deliberately tried to put Black men in jail or anyone else in jail if there were opportunities to keep them out of jail. Everybody has a story to tell, except if you start to investigate some of these antidotes and stories you find that they’re bull..

As a criminal defense and civil rights attorney, Ms. Harris is everything wrong with a prosecutor. The correct terms to apply to her behavior is "criminal," "felonious," and "disgusting." If I had ever fought against her in my state, I would have personally pressed criminal charges against her, as well as seeking her disbarment. If you really want to see her split wide open as a criminal, please, by all means, have an experienced criminal lawyer cross-examine her on a debate. It would be profoundly entertaining and disturbing.

Everyone from the investigators, to the judge, to the prosecutor, to the defense lawyers, to the jailers are all criminals to one extent or the other. I know several people who have gone through legal matters and in one case the investigators clearly lied about the "evidence" they found, and I am 99% positive that the defense lawyers made a back alley deal with the prosecutor. They began to browbeat my friend to take the plea, rather than pursuing the case as they originally said they were going to. Then the defense lawyers lied to him about what the evidence that the expert witness looked at. If my friend didn't drop the defense lawyers, I am positive they would have flopped the case at trial. When they were dropped, of course, all but 37 cents were spent out of the $20,000 that they were paid. And the judges only allow in "evidence" that convicts, unless the exculpatory evidence is provided by God himself. When pointing out the logical and contradictory evidence that the investigators and the prosecutors presented, their response was always "we always see that" because they know that a stupid jury will buy any line of BS from them. The USA court system is nothing but a circus from start to finish with regular people's lives at stake. You can cut the head off two people and get away with it as long as you have enough money to toss at lawyers and courts.

@@karozans Defense attorneys don't brow beat their clients. If we believe it is the best interest of the client, then we instruct them accordingly. Many times, however, the client will think his case is winnable. However, as attorneys, we know the law; the client does not. So we instruct them accordingly. Exculpatory evidence is often admissible. If it's illegally excluded, then the accused has a strong case for a retrial or to have his conviction overturned. Counsel is not permitted to "flop" a case. Doing so is grounds for professional discipline.

@@kesselster Well I guess you have a different definition of browbeating than I do, because it sure sounded like it to me. Two guys yelling at my friend to take the plea when the evidence wasn't even viewed by expert witness. I don't think you know the law like you pretend like you do. There are over 70,000 pages of federal law on the books and over 150,000 pages of laws at the state and local levels. The CBO cannot really even count how many laws there are because they often refer back to obscure administrative procedures. Saying that you know the law is like a surgeon saying he knows the human body. You might know a tiny fraction of a percent about it, but you don't know the law as a whole. And most of the time, you only know a few dozen of the latest tricks that are used to fight specific cases. Evidence is admissible and it's not admissible depending on if the judge had a bowel movement or not. Judges allow or disallow on a whim. How many cases are overturned because it was found that a judge illegally excluded evidence? Like 8? The problem is that what the normal average public would view as solid evidence is excluded because the entire court system from top to bottom has decided that should be excluded. In my friends case, we found 10 dozen engineers online saying the same thing that was published on reputable engineering websites and in reputable articles. None of that was able to go into evidence. Why? Because they know it would have changed the mind of the jury. LOL who would ever know if you flop a case or not? Unless you show up drunk or high or forgot to file some paperwork? If you choose to not aggressively seek out exculpatory evidence from the investigators or chose to not ask the right set of questions of the investigators on the stand, no one would know but you. Who would ever be able to tell the difference between incompetence and willful flopping a case? The only time you would ever be punished is if you had a paper trail leading to your malpractice and only then you'd probably just get a stern finger wagged in your face.

@@karozans It is immaterial what the expert witnesses think. They play a small part in many cases. I am a criminal defense attorney. That is an extraordinary claim. What do you base your opinion on my education on? No, no, of course I don't. Of course they do. It's not as if there is a body of law on evidence. Hold on. Are you referring to malpractice or intentionally failing to zealously represent a client? The two are distinct.

Well that just blows my mind to kingdom come, because my friend's defense lawyers told him to take the plea based 100% based upon the expert witnesses letter of the information he found without even examining the evidence. The witness just reviewed reports given to him by the government and that was all the defense lawyer needed to brow beat my friend into taking the plea. Which claim are you talking about? I made lots of claims. Exactly. That's why the court system is nothing but a circus. All evidence should be allowed, unless it can be proven before hand to be false or has absolutely nothing to do with the case. Now we are getting into the ambiguous nature of the english language. If a lawyer flopped a case by failing to zealously represent a client, it would be considered malpractice if some legal body found out about it, but incompetence if no one found out about it. I consider them to be one and the same. But of course, the legal system has 10 billion definitions of things that don't jive with the poor plebes caught up in it.

I worked for the Cali DOJ while Harris was AG. Even back then everyone knew her end game was the presidency. Our impression was that she used the AG's office to that effect, at the expense of the actual functioning of the Department.

Have somebody who’s laughing all the time as arrogant or pretentious. Laughter does not lend itself to that Behavior.
