The potential candidates vying to join Vice President Kamala Harris on the Democratic ticket have been thrust into a selection process under a compressed timeline - accelerating various factions’ push for their preferred pick.
Already, members of North Carolina’s congressional delegation are pushing their state’s governor, Roy Cooper. Pennsylvanians are championing Gov. Josh Shapiro, who won election two years ago by an almost 15-point margin in the crucial swing state. Some Senate Democrats have strong praise for their colleague Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona.

They are mentioning her because she would be the perfect fit for Harris. But, Whitmer is also a very well respected and supported governor of Michigan and she feels she still has a lot of work to do there. As a fellow Michigander, I would like to see her stay in Michigan, but as an independent voter, I feel like Harris/Whitmer would be unbeatable.

Tim Walz gets my vote. His personality matches Kamala. He smiles and laughs. The both of them are a breath of fresh air after all the hate mongering by the other side. He has a good ability to articulate the issues off the cuff without hesitation. I thoroughly enjoy listening to him speak. I've listened to them all - he's the one. He balances out the ticket.

I don't understand why the 2026 Senate election would be considered "special", that Senate seat is up for reelection in 2026 regardless if Kelly is running in the race, wouldn't it just be considered a regular Senate election? The only thing special about the situation seems to be the power provided to the governor to appoint someone to fill the remainder of the seat until the next general election for that seat.

Kelly's vote is needed in the Senate. Whitmer has already said No. The logical pick should be Cooper. His 2 terms as a Dem gov in a red state ends in January. He and Harris have a long history of working together over the decades. Brashear is needed in KY. - he just got re-elected. No discussion of Pete Buttigieg? He fills a much more distinctive niche than "pro-choice governor from a swing state". More importantly, he is more charismatic and compelling of a communicator than everyone else mentioned here and already has ties to Harris. Plus, some voters feel that Harris is a bit faux-friendly, while even Buttigieg's detractors admit that he is perfectly happy to meet you as he is. Even if you think he is a flawed candidate, I think it's a disservice not to mention him.
