The Kampfpanzer 70 ( KPz 70) was a joint project between the USA and Germany in the mid-1960s. The development ended in 1971 when the project was discontinued. The Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams main battle tanks are based on the results of the development work .
The German KPz 70 (MBT-70) sadly was a bit of a disaster tank project to develop a new main battle tank during the 1960s.
The MBT-70 was developed by the United States and West Germany in the context of the Cold War, intended to counter the new generation of Warsaw Pact tanks developed by the Soviet Union. The new tank was to be equipped with a number of advanced features such as newly developed "kneeling" hydropneumatic suspension and housing the entire crew in the large turret, and was armed with a 152mm XM150 gun/launcher, which could use both conventional ammunition and the Shillelagh missile for long range combat.
By the late 1960s, the development of the MBT-70 was well over budget and affected by design issues. West Germany withdrew from the project due to costs and new difference in requirements. The United States continued development of the MBT-70 until 1971 when the program was finally cancelled, with funds and technology from the MBT-70 project redirected to the development of the M1 Abrams. West Germany independently developed the Leopard 2 as its new main battle tank.
Hope you enjoy!!

KPZ-70 the best looking tank of all times. I love this thing. In addition to what it was said in the video it also would have had a modern battlefield situational awareness system that let you see your heading and position and where on the battlefield are the other tanks in your team and stuff like that, the commander could drive and shoot the tank and so on. Today all of these things are second nature and we never think of them as some super advantage but in the 60s and 70s ...they were a game changer. It would have been interesting to see how the tank looked after a few years when thermal gunsights and composite armor packages would have been added to it.

This is a tank I wanted to know more of, thank you Matsimus! You should make a video about de TAM (Argentine Medium Tank), the MBT of the Argentine Army. It was developed by Argentina and Germany (it is based on the Marder) in the '70-'80 and it's the only tank that was developed for and built in South America. It also gave way to a whole family of armoured units, such as de VCTP IFV and the VCA Palmaria artillery platform, as well as mortar carriers and command vehicles, all in service in the Argentine Army.

And thus, the KPz 70 and MBT 70 twins were separated as each parents took custody. They grew up, MBT 70 gave birth to Abrams, KPz 70 gave birth to the Leopard 2. Both Abrams and Leopard maintained good relations with each other. Sometimes they play their favorite game with each other: war game. Both tanks lived happily ever after. The end.

It was a very interesting concept, and certainly pushed the envelope for what was possible in a tank design. If nothing else, NATO learned a lot from the program that would go into the tank designs of the late 1970s and 1980s.

Both sides learned hard lessons from each other other during ww2 and came away with traded view points. The Americans who lost many of their light fast tanks to the germans heavier and slower tanks though that their next MBT should be a heavily armoured machine hence the Abrams. Whereas the Germans learned that speed and numbers is a more effective form of armour hence the leopard .
@HaVoC117X
@HaVoC117X 4 года назад
That's an over simplification. Just because the Germans produced a few tiger tanks and other heavy break through assault weopons, this does not mean, that they gave up mobility on their medium tanks and mbts. From panzer iii via panther to the leopard 2, the hierarchy of capabilities was always, fire power first, mobility second armor protection last. This never changed.
@reelogic2341
@reelogic2341 4 года назад
@@HaVoC117X you are confused with the purpose of a medium tank then. Of course german medium tanks were mobile. They're medium tanks 🤣🤣 thats their whole purpose. But to think that German tank design in ww2 thought of mobility before Armour is a laughable idea. Why did almost every german tank design suffer from engine problems. Simple, most were underpowered to deal with the amount of armour the germans wanted on the vehicles, and did not want to reduce armour in favor of speed. Germans designed their tanks for the main intent of them facing other tanks thats why medium tanks like the panther and later versions of the panzer 3 had high velocity anti tank guns. In contrast the Americans/british believed tanks main purpose is infantry support hence most models of shermans had the low velocity 75mm rather then the 17 pounder or other high velocity caliber. Why? Because low velocity guns have more effective HE rounds. And to think that because germans built tiger's/tiger 2s/ panthers in less quantities gustifies some belief that the germans preferred faster medium tanks over them is just plain wrong. German built fewer heavy tanks because they were more costly and difficult to produce not because they liked them less. When the Leo 1 came out it was one of the most lightly armoured MBTs in the world especially in contrast to the Abrams. The doctrine reversal is even more evident when looking at speed with the leo 1 being almost 20 km faster than the early abrams.
@HaVoC117X
@HaVoC117X 4 года назад
@@reelogic2341 Are you brain dead or something? Panzer III and IV had very thin armor compared to T34 and Sherman and were one of the most reliable tanks out there, with decent mobility and capable of withstanding long road marches. The Panther has one of the best power to weight ratios of all wwii tanks. It's off road mobility was unmatched. It's unreliability was not a design error. It was a lack of resource, tools and machines which led to huge fluctuations in production Quality. Just because the 76mm He shell of the Sherman was less impressive than the 75mm He shell doesn't mean that this has to be true for other weapon systems as well. The explosiv filler of the Sherman's m3 75mm gun were 680g of TNT with a 2845kj of explosive energy. While the long 75 kwk 40/L48 had 660g of Amatol creating 2760kj. The difference is minimal. While the german gun could still achieve much higher muzzle velocity for ap rounds. And as you said yourself, enough firepower to be able to destroy even heavy enemy armor was the main critiria for german tanks since 1941. So you even contradict yourself. LOL The kwk 42 of the Pantherhad 690g to 725g of amatol. While the Shermans 76mm had only 465g of TNT. You better start reading some books. The Panther was only 10% more expensive compared to a panzer iv. Only 8500 panzer iv were produced from 1939 to 1945. The germans built 4500 panthers in 1944 alone. Big doesn't have to mean, that it wasn't streamlined for mass production. In the same year the Russians built 11.000 t34/85. The tank exchange ratio was 1 to 4 in favor for the Germans through out 1944, just to give you a scale what those numbers mean.
@HaVoC117X
@HaVoC117X 4 года назад
@@reelogic2341 The Leopard had thin armor but it wasnt a light tank for its time (1965). It had a weight of 44 tons, compare that to an m60 with 48tons (1960). The germans used the weigth to mount a big ass engine and a great running gear to make it the fastest 105mm gun platform in existence. The introduction of composite armor changed alot, so i dont know why you campared a third gen MBT to a Leopard 1. The Abrams was even introduced after the Leopard 2 in the early 1980s.

@@HaVoC117X brain dead??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 that would be someone who picks bits of info and applies it to everything. 1. Yes correct the weight of of TNT is comparable, however u do realize that the method of deployment is more important that the weight of explosive. Prime example the kill radius of an 81mm motar firing a 4lb projectile is 35m compared to a 105 mm howitzer firing a 35 lb projectile with a kill radius of only 30 m, why because the motar fires at a lower velocity like a sherman. Imagine if u threw a water balloon as hard as u can at the ground 5m in front of u the water pattern would be long and skinny because the energy is focused forward, great for AP not for HE, now if u lobbed the balloon at the same area it would be a more even spread because of the lower velocity, great for HE less so for AP. 2. Yes a panthers where made in greater amounts in 44 that panzer 4s but you do realize that the panther was designed to replace the panzer 4 and the need for armour haf greatly increased since early 40s so fucking obviously they would be made in greater amounts. 3. Yes the cost of of a panther is only 10% greater than a panzer 4. Why? Because u are comparing the cost for the engine and the hull/turret. that cost does not include any types of arrangement communication systems, or optics which are greater in panther. Even if it was just 10% greater that difference compounds greatly the more numbers of the vehicle u produce. You also seem to think that the purchase prize is the only cost of the vehicle. Maintance and repair costs where much higher in the more advanced panther. Plus the panther burned 65% more fuel than the panzer 4 to reach both their max range of 200 km

just a bit different: different gun: originally m1 used 105mm, Leopard 2 the 120mm L44 and then L55, different armor altogether, different engines (m1-> gas turbine, leopard 2-> diesel).

Saw a pretty damn nice model of a KPz-70, where the missile gun had been replaced with a 120mm L/55 gun, the 20mm had been ditched entirely and the armor had been improved around the vehicle much in the same way as with the Leopard. The turret armor was extended all the way to the gun mantle. Also seen a computer model of an MBT-70 modernization that basically looks like a Super Abrams.

I always loved tanks. So much so I started an vehicle armor company, designing new technologies for defeating high caliber rounds and explosives. This tank came out when I was in high school. The tank was way too complicated. Adjustable suspension , was cool. Typical time frame was about twenty years,because as time goes by, new ideas,technologies, but the absolute dumbest idea was to put the driver in the turret. It made drivers sick

Sorry but you are wrong about the armor layout. The Radiation liner was on the inside of the turret not in the cavities. We know that the bustle was spaced armor with high hardness steel on the outside and RHA on the inside. The crew compartment was spaced armor with RHA plates outside and a cast steel-shell inside. There likely have been some filler element in the cavities as we can see on the later XM803, they filled the part in front of the gunner's sight with cast steel, likely as a cost-saving measure. The protection level was 105mm APDS at 800 meters.

The M-48A5 and the M-60A3 with modern upgrades are still in service with some countries and are still excellent tanks . I was a 19D20 Cavalry Scout and was cross trained on these tanks in the 70's. Upgraded M-60's are as good as any steel haul tanks today.

Check out the upgrades on RU-vid. with all the new electronics and new 120mm gun and reactive armor I think it would have a better chance then the German Leopards that seem to have a survival issues in the Turkish Army.. It is better than any other steel haul tanks out there.

@@lisar3006 I have seen the upgraded m60 and it for sure looks capable, especially its offensive capabilities, but I still have severe doubts about its ability to survive impacts from modern APFSDS rounds. The US insistence on those Gun/Missile launchers not only helped scuttle this design but also led to the abomination of the M60A2, which not surprisingly also failed spectacularly. Another bit of trivia, out of the 60,000 plus missiles made for the 152mm GMLs only a few were ever fired in anger right before the Sheridans were pulled from active service after Desert Storm. They weren’t even fired at tanks, just used to destroy bunkers.
