The final ceremony in one’s life is the funeral. The Balinese take meaning of this final celebration as the beginning of a new life, where someone will receive consequences of all one has done in the mortal world. Death, for the Hindus, is only a process of changing body. The previous gross body will be substituted by a new one according to one’s past deeds and consciousness. So, there is almost no sorrow in Balinese funerals. The colors are still alive. The splendor is the same. Palebon is derived from the root ‘lebu’ which means ‘turn to ashes’. Its synonym is ngaben, which comes from the word ‘abuin’ (to turn to ash). The Balinese do not always burn dead bodies. Sometimes, corpses are burried. However, the meaning is that this body is not eternal. Every human is reminded that anything related to the body is not the real purpose of life. Everything will be ‘lebu’, destroyed to ashes, when one dies.
