This whole movie has changed my life. I think of war differently, I think of my life differently. As a American in high school we are never taught that other countries suffer during war too. We are taught that they are the bad guys and we are good. But all of that is wrong! There never is the good and bad guys, cause everyone is a murder and making others suffer. Edit: thanks for all the likes and responses! I just want to say that I understand Japan was in the wrong too but the comment I made was sympathizing with the civilians of war.

@nina-go2vi
@nina-go2vi 6 лет назад
Diana Luquez In a lot of schools they celebrate people like Columbus, not really exploiting the fact that he treated native Americans terribly. I never was showed the other sides of war until I found it myself. I’m just saying a lot of schools don’t show what other countries went through in war. And if your school has then I’m really glad, it’s just less ignorant people.
@Diana-tl8pn
@Diana-tl8pn 6 лет назад
I do not know if this is the right thing to do, but you should ask your school (like a petition with signs and all) to better their history program and to show the different perspectives of war. I think that showing war as just a simple us versus them can be really dangerous and can harm one's perspective of countries. For example, I think talking about the moral implications of the atomic bomb is not only a extremely enriching topic, but can give an idea of what kind of morals be have, how we justify mayor scale actions, and if the United States was ever justify to do that. I mean, it is obvious that the United States was not the only at fault here, the Japanese Army was notorious for their war crimes such as mass genocide. But we ought to understand most of the people were ignorant civilians that were lied to about the events of the war. History is necessary to understand others countries culture and their relations to one's country.
@nina-go2vi
@nina-go2vi 6 лет назад
Diana Luquez thank you for trying to help. Though because of the school system in the US my parents have decided to homeschool me (thank the lord ;) But I do have some close friends that what you suggested are right up their alley, so I’ll talk to them. But really thank you.😉

As a student, history teaches us a lot, especially war. When i was a kid i was taught that the enemies are the bad guys, ofc they are who would think they are not after they killed many right? But as i grew older, the more i know about the history of other countries, there really isnt a bad guy, all humans are simply just victims of war, we all lost people we are all losers of war. It just happened that everyone of us have different perspective and how we see things. (Sorry for my english im not a native speaker.)

Some people even believe even in the war they were as bad as Hitler to the Chinese. The bomb was the only way to stop them. But what breaks my heart is that the citizens that died had nothing to do with it but 60 million people in total died in the WWs. This was the only solution they had to stop the war.

I'm from Viet Nam and throughout our history, we have suffered many many terrible things from the Chinese invaders, the French colonists, the Imperial Japanese troops and the US military stationed in South Viet Nam in the 60s and 70s. Growing up, the children of our country learn about the war crimes committed to our past generations. We grieve but at the same time, we never wish for all those mentioned countries to be annihilated. Like, if North Korea and the US are to fire the nuclear bombs to each other, we'd be all concerned for their people and feel the same inflicted pain. The A-bomb was NOT a solution. The Japanese emperor Hirohito already followed the surrender procedure by the time fearing the invasion of the Red Army. What the US government did with dropping the bombs was to speed up the Japanese to surrender with no terms and show off to the Red Army their incommensurate might while poisoning the land with radioactive waste to impede the invasion of the USSR and avoid another scenario like in Germany.

I don’t think there’s any really good person in this world who would honestly want them to be used again. My only regret is that it had to happen at all, and to such a beautiful country such as there’s. If the war truly had to end, it didn’t have to be this way. I’m just so proud though that they have been able to recover in the way in which they have. That’s the one thing we can never deny, and as this film has clearly shown us. They are so brave.

It was originally three volumes, so there's a huge amount of material they didn't have room for in the movie. There is a mention of the rouge she got from Teru-chan, but otherwise no mention of who Teru-chan was or why Suzu had her rouge. And almost the entire relationship with Rin was left out, including the note card she had with her name and address that a kind customer had written for her so she could copy it when she needed to. (Rin was illiterate) That card was an important plot point in the book. Missing in the movie. A lot of small details were lost in the movie.

There were good reasons to fight Imperial Japan. I haven't heard a reason to nuke them that made it preferable to accepting their attempts to negotiate a surrender. I'm not sure what we lost by negotiating an armistice with Italy in 1943.
@Yorosero
@Yorosero 6 лет назад
It's easy to say that in hindsight, but there were strong elements in the governing class of Japan, from the imperial family down to commoners, who wanted a fight to the death - even Suzu in the movie shows such resolve. After Pearl Harbour, Imperialist Japan had to be humbled, and Japan was far from a victim in WW2.

I think movies like this try to say something important and the biggest message they always get across is that in these giant wars between nations, there are always going to be innocent people who are only trying to live their lives who get caught in the crossfire. Men, Women, children all get killed for the higher achievement of victory over this foreign entity when most of these people are simply just trying to live their lives and be happy but get caught in situations they have no control over and have to put their lives on the line because of it.

Manila Philippines, my country, was bombed too by the Japanese. I can still remember vividly how my grandmother who was 9y.o. that time would tell us stories of her childhood hiding from the Japanese forces. Their house was situated near the city, got burned down when the aerial bombardment and the japanese troops came. She said they quickly fled to the most rural areas in order to hide, her being the eldest along with 7 siblings 5 of which are females, eating only grasses and what edible food they find along the way. It was really terrible she said because there's that constant fear and threat of being raped, killed, mutilated or tortured today, tomorrow, who knows. One of her younger sister tho was raped by a Japanese official, unfortunately, killed herself along with the baby (I don't remember well, but i think that was how it went). It's funny how this song makes me remember of my brave Filipina grandmother (who is still alive today). It's sad what happened to my Lola, but I've never resented the Japanese or looked at them in a different way. Because I think I don't have the right to nor was I ever there to account what had happen. It's all in the past now, she says. After the war only her mother and father and 3 siblings survived. They eventually moved to Negros Oriental to work on a sugar cane field. That's where she met the love of her life, married and continued the later chapters of her life. This anime movie shows the life of how common folks lived during the war time. Truly captivating and wonderful.

This is a movie that put everything in what I wanted to feel since starting to read about WW2 in 3rd grade: emotion, Reading books in america I read stories of horrors that my ancestors did, in 3rd grade I read about the bombings of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Pearl Harbor, and the destruction of many ships on sea, I was always split in feelings even then, because War was War, what I read told me that all sides hurt those who didn’t deserve it, reading about the deaths just made me upset in a way that made me cry at night. 4th to 5th grade I started reading about those in POW Camps, the Japanese Americans taken away from their homes, and any more stories/information like it. The loneliness that i could imagine people in that time felt didn’t help me with my split feelings, I felt like I was suppose to hate one specific side, I felt terrible when catching myself feeling sympathy for the Japanese soldiers who died, they were terrible and did terrible things. Reading about the deaths at that time just made me feel a little bit empty, I was starting to get used to reading the names of the dead in history books, noticing patterns on how they died, (“there’s that marine who drowned, the pilot fell out of the air, soldier got shot, kamikaze did their job too well, there’s another one who committed suicide...”) 5th, 6th, 7th grade, I started reading on the tolls of how the war affected the countries, learning more about the other countries involved with the war, Germany especially. I read of the bombs missing their targets and hitting streets of homes where people died thanks to miscalculation. Read of people forced out of their homes because of the their religion/beliefs, forced into concentration camps, all those numbers just started blurring into just dots on the paper, I just couldn’t imagine most of it anymore, those with pictures just looked like blank sheets of paper, telling a story of torment that I somehow couldn’t find the humanity to see emotion in, I couldn’t or hadn’t cried about it anymore, by then death was just something that cause barely a reaction from me, and that stretches to when I attended 5 funerals. 8th grade, was when I just started loosing things to read about, by then every book on WW2 in my school library and half of the public library was read to the best of my abilities, by then I had visited places like Hiroshima and Nagasaki to see parks and memorials and other remnants of what had happened, including the “bakudan Dome” where the atomic bomb was dropped on, somehow the building is still standing, even when that was exactly where the bomb had detonated from then sky as pictures depicted he rumble of everything around it, in some pictures you could see that dome in the frame, the most secure structure it always seemed to look like, the top is only the metal frame left the walls are barely standing, I don’t know why out of everything that was the one thing that hit me hard. This movie, made me feel emotion, made me somehow feel happy that this woman lived on, cried for the dead little girl, for the little girls mother, for the artists missing arm, for all of the death that was presented in this movie, I somehow felt the emotion in the scenes where the main character saw pieces of artwork instead of reality. This is what made me feel for this movie, because I couldn’t just feel impassive like I did in other war movies for some reason, I just felt it, and saw it, saw the woman’s family, saw the soldiers give chocolate to children, saw the explosions, saw the little girl watch her mothers corpse rot away, to be taken in by the woman and her husband. It felt like that split became nonexistent there were citizens affected, citizens who died, citizens who kept on struggling, and citizens that kept on growing and moving as to see the future ahead. That was enough emotion for me to feel when I watched this movie.

Reminds me of a time in my life when all I thought about was my own death (strange, I know). For about six years I was unknowingly depressed and thought about suicide constantly- literally from the second I woke up to the second I lost consciousness in sleep. This movie gave me a short distraction from that hell, and for that I am thankful. I beat it, by the way, my depression. I haven’t thought about suicide in weeks (months?) and I have no intention of going back to it. The strange thing is that I don’t think I would be able to think any new thoughts about it. I basically plunged the depths of the kind of reality you can discover from thinking about your own death and suicide, and realized that living was just objectively better. There is still that hint of curiosity, though, as to what happens after we die. But, like everyone else, I’ll let that happen when it happens. In a sense, I’m sort of looking forward to it where before I was dreading it. Well, that’s my story. Thanks for reading and I hope you out there who suffers from depression/anxiety find your way out of it. It’s a serious thing, so don’t take it lightly like I did. If you’re suffering from trauma (like abuse) GET HELP. You need to see a psychologist, therapist, or someone to help you out. Someone who is clinically trained, not Joe Shmoe off the streets. Cheers, and be safe. Edit: As I listen to this song some more, I realize that it was in those raptures of beauty that I saw the deficiencies in thinking about death all the time. There’s just so much more to the world of art and beauty than I was willing to admit in those days. Works like this were like cracks in my miserable, depressed mind that lead me outside toward a life of joy.

When I was younger I always heard stories of how the red army drove my ancestors away from their home, killed and raped them and I've always felt a feeling of hate and a desire for revenge in my heart. But as I got older I recognized that if I continue to think that way, what happened to my ancestors will happen to other innocent people who are just trying to live their lives. And this movie really shows that in the end war and violence only sows more pain than it promises to heal.

I recently watched this movie not the first time and about 30 minutes after watching it I’m laying in bed thinking about and I just get this sudden overwhelming guilt bc of those bombs. I bursted into tears just crying in my pillow thinking why did it have to come to that? I knew those bombs had to be dropped and I support it but just thinking of all the loss of life that happened in just that one milli-second of heat and light, all the children and families just gone. Ig I just mourned for all those lives lost even though none of them knew me.

I read about how this movie affected the way people saw war and everything but... but for me, it was like seeing an alternative universe about my life. The hardships, the pain, everything bad that happens in life that is just *out of your hands*... and that we have to deal with it, the best we can. I just empathise so much with the way she could not be with the one she loved and just had to learn to love another man. I see this movie more... personal. And I think that was part of the plot there. GREAT MOVIE THO

Amelie Bancroft yeah it’s not like i believe in “things happen for a reason” “it was meant to be” “it was for the greater good/made you a better person” mentality but it is still nice that hope exists even after such awful events have taken place. the strength and resilience of humanity is admirable
@iamb34

SO true. We humans tend to choose things that may not be in our favour on the long run, make decisions that were not the best and even if we knew that, we chose them due to emotional or other reasons. Yet this same thing tends to make us strong to face them and/or live with the memory of them.
@ShredST
@ShredST 5 лет назад
"it is still nice that hope exists even after such awful events have taken place. the strength and resilience of humanity is admirable" Yeah, it sure is nice that the people of a country that was a terror to every neighboring country could still have hope. Sorry to be that annoying guy, but as a Chinese I'm just, ugh. People in the west are taught to be suspicious of Chinese communist propaganda, but then movies like this which paint an aggressor in a sympathetic light are just totally great, apparently. Not that it's not a great movie, but, like, wow, is this what the Japanese think is terrible with WWII?
