The overview of the area around the samurai residence ruins is excerpted from the Kanazawa City Tourist Guidebook "Kanazawa" published by the Kanazawa City Tourism Policy Division.
The area around the ruins of samurai residences is where middle-class samurai of the Kaga Domain lived during the feudal government, and the narrow alleys, earthen walls, and longhouse gates have preserved the past. Every year from early December to mid-March, it is recommended to protect the earthen wall from snow, and it has become a winter tradition in Kanazawa.
The Samurai Residence Ruins Nomura House is the only samurai residence site in the samurai residence ruins area that is open to the public. You can see the style of the time that valued formality.
The building of the Nagamachi Training School of Kanazawa College of Artisans is presumed to have been built from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period, and is typical of the characteristics of samurai buildings. It was renovated in March 1999 as part of the comprehensive training at Kanazawa College of Artisans.
The tea room in the back garden was newly built by trainees at that time, bringing together traditional architectural techniques.
There are 55 irrigation lines in Kanazawa that use the Sai River and the Asano River as their water sources. The Kuratsuki irrigation water and the Ōnosho irrigation water that flows through the city center have existed since the Edo period, and were used for transporting goods from the port, fire prevention, castle town defense, irrigation, etc. Along with the earthen wall, you can feel the same emotion and atmosphere as before.
The Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum is a relocation and reproduction of two Ashigaru residences during the feudal government. The roof is made of stone, creating an atmosphere of that time.
The site of the former Takada family of the Kaga Domain has been restored from the tenement gate of the feudal government era and is open to the public. On the premises, there is a splendid pond strolling garden, which retains the remnants of that time.
The Nagamachi Samurai Residence Rest Hall has a rest room, toilets, and an exhibition corner. Tourism volunteers "Maido-san" will be stationed there to guide you around the area.
The Kanazawa City Long-Established Memorial Hall is a building that relocates the medicine store "Nakaya" that opened in Tensho 7 and retains the remnants of the feudal government. On the first floor, the "Mise Room" and other items have been restored, and on the second floor, there is an exhibition of the "Kanazawa Long-Established Stores 100 Years Exhibition" where various household tools that have been handed down to each long-established store are displayed.
The Maeda Tosanokami Museum has a collection of about 9,000 items related to the Maeda Tosanokami family, and about 80 items such as ancient documents, calligraphy, paintings, and furnishings are on display at any given time, including the calligraphy of Maeda Toshiie, the founder of the Kaga clan.
