I can't understand how anyone could disagree with Kane Cornes here. I'm a swans member and was at the game where Barry Hall knocked out Brent Staker. That rule should have been in effect back when that happened. The argument from the other commentators that it shouldn't be brought in because instances like that are rare is juvenile, it works well in other codes.

Not only that but why not implement a flagrant foul like the NBA. Get 2 Flagrants you’re off. The severity of incident to warrant a flagrant would have to be along the lines of immediate reports by umpires or when you cause significant harm to another player.

I just don't trust the AFL to get it right 100% of the time. If a send off is only ever applied when there a clear closed fist punch that sends a player off the ground then perhaps it can work, but otherwise no.
@JaxTheGat
@JaxTheGat 2 года назад
And what happens when an umpire makes a mistake and sent off a guy where video evidence shows later on they are not guilty? How many times has an empire reported somebody only to see the player proved innocent later on in the week with video evidence? Imagine an umpire sends off the most influential player on the ground only for the video to show that the bump was fair and in the shoulder and the player actually hits his head on the ground. You’ve penalised a whole team and all their supporters because an umpire couldn’t wait for the match review panel that has the benefit of slow motion and replay. Everybody wants to rule is left alone until they get emotionally attached to something and then they want the AFL to chop away at the way the games been forever. Every team has had a player knocked out by the opposition. And every team has had a player that has done something wrong to the opposition. Sending players off means decisions will be made when emotions are high. Umpires shouldn’t even make reports any more. Wait till cooler heads prevail With the benefit of video evidence. And Kane corns is a tool saying that the whole game write it on that bump. Yes it made a difference but who knows what else could’ve happened.

Cornes is clearly the most insightful footy pundit. In soccer, the referee has the authority to send off (red card) a player that displays unsportsman-like behavior, like deliberately injuring an opponent. If the AFL fails to adopt such a measure then it is not serious about protecting athletes from potentially suffering avoidable injury, which could leave a person paralyzed or with some other disabling condition...e.g. Liam Picken.

The inherent problem still exists, in that, when a player is banned for an act vs 1 team, they don't miss the next matches vs that team, they miss them vs potentially other teams vying for the league table spot. If something like this is introduced ( and this is where football needs to improve too) the bans should only mean that player can't play vs that team again. If said player retires or moves clubs. Nearly every sport has a send off rule. Throughout my juniors we played with yellow and red cards. If someone got one they instantly knew that they’ve put their team in trouble. The AFL need to have more consequences than just sending a player to the tribunal. If they have a send off rule in place Stewart would’ve been sent off and then in the coming days the tribunal would hand their suspension.

Kane usually brings up some good points, but he's way off the mark here. To be suggesting that Tom Stewart's hit on Dion Prestia cost Richmond the match because he didn't get sent off for it and then went on to be best on ground in a match that Geelong won by less than a goal is just ludicrous. Richmond were 17 points in front during the last quarter after coming back from a sizeable deficit, and they had Geelong at their mercy. Good teams don't usually lose from there, and they let it slip.
@Cliffy1616
@Cliffy1616 2 года назад
It’s not ludicrous though. If there was a sin bin and Stewart was out for the rest of the match then the Cats lose, that’s just how well he played. Even then if Prestia doesn’t get KO’ed he normally averages around 5 score involvements a game in a game decided by 3 points that makes a difference. Does it mean they’d have definitely won? Not at all but considering they lost by just 3 points without him then there’s a fairly decent chance they win with him. There’s also the fact play wasn’t stopped when Prestia was coming off which meant Richmond were down a player for that period and it did end up with Geelong getting a goal that they otherwise wouldn’t have if play was stopped properly. Good teams also don’t cough up large leads like the cats did, so trying to imply Richmond aren’t good because they let it slip very much applies to Geelong in the exact same way. Fact is good teams will also find a way back which BOTH teams did. But the cats got very lucky, an undeserved goal when play should have been stopped and they took Prestia out early who very well could have been the difference in such a close game. He’s not no Dusty at his peak but Prestia has been probably their best player this year and his absence does make a difference. Just as Stewart’s would have if the AFL had a sin bin.

@Matt I mean I don’t agree with 17 on the field. But that’s what Richmond had to deal with for a minute or 2 while Prestia was coming off because okay didn’t stop. They were down a player for that period and there ended up being a goal to Geelong in that period. That’s not right, it’s not Geelong’s fault that the umpires weren’t on the ball but in a game decided by less than a kick it has an impact. Don’t get me wrong the Tigers had there chances and didn’t get the job done. But 1 sketchy goal in a game decided by 3 points is gonna ruffle feathers.

@@Cliffy1616 the umpires would have stopped the game if the stretcher was called for. The Tigers have no one to blame but themselves.
